Would you work part time if you could earn £30k?

A full time position is available at £50kper year but they are also offering it as a job share at £30k for a 3 day week.

I’m leaning on working park time as have a preschooler, but would I be silly in turning down the extra money?

Yes. I work 2.5 days for 30k. Young children. At the moment the time is worth more to me than the money.

TTCVC · 03/11/2021 18:04

That’s a great salary then! Which part of the UK?
I work 30 hours per week for 38.5k.

Megan2018 · 03/11/2021 18:05

I get just over £40k for 4 days, so the same FTE roughly. It works well for me. I’ll do 5 short days instead of 4 once DD at school.

That’s more than a lot of people earn full time! To me it would be a non brainer to go part time so I could spent time with my DC if I could live quite comfortably doing so. Money comes and goes but you can’t ever get that time back with your child.

JaninaDuszejko · 03/11/2021 18:25

Well I work FT and enjoy the security the extra money provides and would not want to half my salary and reduce the amount going into my pension and savings.

As long as you have the option to go FT once your DC are all at school then it's not too bad a decision if you want time at home with your DC (DH and I both worked 4 days a week while the DC were at nursery). You'll obviously be paying a lot less into your pension on £30K so do the figures on that and decide if you want to take the hit. And it will likely impact on your ability to get a promotion as well. The higher tax bracket can easily be avoided by paying more into your pension so don't factor in that.

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 03/11/2021 18:28

I work 2 days per week because I’ve moved up the pay scale enough that 2 days now gives me the same take home pay as 5 days did a few years back.

I could do 5 days and enjoy the extra money, but our like to spend time with my 2 year old while she is young. I may do more days when both children are in schoolS

Marmite27 · 03/11/2021 18:28

Hell yes. It’s £5k more than I’m on for 35 hours!

Franklin12 · 03/11/2021 18:31

Who is doing the other 2 days?

Plantstrees · 03/11/2021 18:31

Yes. I now work one day a week for 1/5th of what I could earn full-time and am much happier for it.

Franklin12 · 03/11/2021 18:32

Often highly paid roles and £30k for 3 days is high have other expectations.

Franklin12 · 03/11/2021 18:34

As in the role just isn’t 0900-1730.

You’re right. It’s an industry where 9-5 is the core hours but it’s flexitime and they expect you to give flexibility back when it’s required in the way of staying late if working on hefty deadlines

On the upside this wouldn’t necessarily be every week or even every month

The package seems good with full private health care, life insurance cover, yearly bonus and a few other things

There would be a chance of going full time if I wanted but I’m thinking if I do part time hours I may get used to that and not want to increase the hours further down the line

Wow, this is my ultimate dream! Way more than my ultimate dream actually!

Icecreamqueen8 · 03/11/2021 20:48

Wow, what part time jobs pay this much? How do I get me one?

NothingIsWrong · 03/11/2021 20:54

I work 30 hours for £43k and I wouldn't go full time for the extra on that. The flexibility it gives me is priceless.

Is it PT or jobshare. If it is jobshare look at the conditions of the job share if one of the sharers leaves. I had a friend who had a job share, her other jobshare partner left and they tried to replace her. Her contract stipulated she had to cover the other part until a replacement could be found. She ended up leaving.

Kite22 · 03/11/2021 23:36

Sounds like a dream opportunity.
You get to work, use your brain, skills, experience. You earn your own money. You keep in touch with the role as it evolves - new skills, technology, ways of doing things, network if that is relevant, whilst also getting to spend more days with your dc than those where you will only see them around your work hours, and you will get to recognise their friends, their friends parents, their Nursery and then school staff and building. You get to build up a bit of a network of other parents who help each other out. It is wonderful.

If you choose to go full time later, then you are in an ideal place to do so.

WalkingOnSonshine · 05/11/2021 12:51

I work part time for 50k, it’s a really great balance. I do 27 hours so have a day off mid week and pick up DC from nursery a bit earlier on a couple of days.
