Would you work part time if you could earn £30k?

A full time position is available at £50kper year but they are also offering it as a job share at £30k for a 3 day week.

I’m leaning on working park time as have a preschooler, but would I be silly in turning down the extra money?

For £30k I’d definitely go for part-time 3 days a week. If you can afford it, no rush to go full time.

Hell I only went to 5 days a week when my eldest was 18! 😊

LakeShoreD · 03/11/2021 14:23

I’ve done pretty much that except I do 4 short days. No regrets.

Notdoingthis · 03/11/2021 14:23

Absolutely. I choose to work 3 days for £20k. Term time only. It's amazing and I am so thankful for the extra time I spend with my kids.

@SnaccidentsHappen

100%, I don't even earn that working full time
This!
TheFairPrincess · 03/11/2021 14:33

I have not worked full time since having the DC bar one 6 month period where my work let me go to full time while pregnant so that I would get 6 months of MATL at full pay. And I hated that. It was far too much with DC, I was home for about an hour before there bed time, my son suffered. I love working part time, I take the hit on money because I can and it's harder but worth it.

I currently work 30 hours and would say this is the maximum I would do until my DC were all in secondary and semi independent.

TheFairPrincess · 03/11/2021 14:35

Also my mum worked earning 50k per year in the 90's and says she regrets having such little time with us.

hotmeatymilk · 03/11/2021 14:36

I already do 3 days for about that and it’s great. I have one day with DD and one day on my own creative work (writer). When she’s in school I can spread it over 5 to accommodate school hours, or go up to 5 days/look for another job to up income and pay for wraparound care. It works for me and us right now but I’d be open to changing it.

buckleten · 03/11/2021 14:36

I do exactly this! For 31k, I started it as 3 full days but now spread the hours across 5 days, works for me and I can fit in school pick ups/drop offs..

Kittykatmacbill · 03/11/2021 14:46

Yes absolutely. Good work life balance potential.
I’d try and arrange so when they hit school you could do 4or 5 short days in term time and 6 days a fortnight during school holidays.
You have the possibility of gaining time with your children not loosing money.

peppersauce1984 · 03/11/2021 14:56

If you can afford it do it. I was in that position after may leave and reduced to 3 days.

StubbleTurnips · 03/11/2021 15:02

Yes, that’s exactly what I’ve done - spread my hours over 5 days though and work from home. It’s lovely - work evenings if I have too, but have a tonne of flexibility.

My only grumble is I’m pretty sure my FT colleagues also do these hours, but earn more, due to Covid. As they are all being forced back to work it’s given me perspective back - but I was resentful for a while.

TuftyMarmoset · 03/11/2021 15:03

If I had a preschooler definitely. I earn 50k full time and want to go down to 4 days a week even though I don’t have DC yet but haven’t applied for flexible working because I figured it would look weird if I didn’t have a legit reason.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 03/11/2021 15:09

I earn £12k doing part time, so yes!

GoodVibesHere · 03/11/2021 15:18

What a question! In my dreams I would.

I work fulltime and don't earn anywhere near that amount so obviously my answer is yes, yes I would work part time for 30K 😂

SiulaGrande · 03/11/2021 15:24

Yes definitely. I have been doing this since DD was born, now in secondary school. It's a great balance as PP say.

Currently working FT for 4 months, two to go and am ticking off the weeks as hate it. No time for chores which puts pressure on weekends, nor for my creative stuff, and not here as much for after school chilling time, which is a lovely time. Also tired and cross more often as a result of all the above.

Plenty of decades years to work FT once DD is an adult.

Siriisatwat · 03/11/2021 15:46

Christ, yes.

But I would never even come close to 30k full time.

WholeClassKeptIn · 03/11/2021 16:07

Wow what do you all do?

I work part time at the moment and earn under 10k Blush I so wish I could do things differently!

RubyRedSlippers1 · 03/11/2021 16:09

Yes, I would take the part time option tbh. Decent part time roles aren't that easy to find ime. No, you're ds won't be a preschooler forever, but for me, part time would always be my preference if I could live on what I was earning, which I could on £30k. I know a few childless people who went part time in their forties just because they could.

TTCVC · 03/11/2021 16:19

How many hours?

RagzReturnsRebooted · 03/11/2021 17:05

Definitely! I work contracted to 3 days a week for £18k, then I have a few other locum jobs that top me up to around 28k but are only half days and I can pick and choose which. I probably average 32 hours a week over 3.5 to 4.5 days a week. DCs are in secondary now so don't need me as much, but the household still needs running and DH is only really capable of cooking dinner a few nights a week.
I'll go full time in a few years so I have more income and better pension.

Thetrainisinthestation · 03/11/2021 17:50

@TTCVC

How many hours?
24 hours a week part time
OP posts:
FlamingGoat · 03/11/2021 17:58

Crikey. I work 47 hrs per and every other Saturday and earn less than half of that.
I'd go for it gladly if I had that option.

DrCoconut · 03/11/2021 17:58

Definitely. Doubling my earnings would be awesome Grin

Blackmagicqueen · 03/11/2021 18:00

It would depend on your husband's earnings and your lifestyle and outgoings. For me personally i would definitely do that!

DontKnowMyOwnName · 03/11/2021 18:02

Yep - I work 2 days a week for around £30k as the full time equivalent is approx £75k. I realise how lucky I am to have that option and hope to hold onto this job forever!
