Fungal nail infection.

Ive had a fungal nail infection on my toe nails for over 10 years. Has anyone successfully got rid of this? If yes, please can you tell me how you did it and how long it took?

@BoJoSecretGF

Vicks Vapour Rub? What is in it??
It doesn't work on fungal toenails. People it may have worked for have obviously not been diagnosed and have had something else, or nothing, wrong and it's just a coincidence.

Maybe you have nail psoriasis? (Looks the same....)

Maybe who does?

I had no toe nails for years because they’d all been destroyed by a fungal infection. Once I found a sympathetic GP six months of terbinafine sorted it.

I was never told to avoid caffeine.

Watching with interest.

Looking at the most recent information leaflet it's now under - other medicines and Terbinafine - section. It used to be more explicit. Terbinafine decreases the bodies ability to get rid of caffeine.
Teaandsugar · 31/10/2021 23:32

I used oregano oil twice a day on toe nail fungus. It has taken a year and now it is just on the tip of the nail. You have to be diligent in using it but it does work.

I've just read the insert and it says to let your GP know if you are taking any of the following medications, and caffeine is on that list. I assume then it just means as a medication, not just a morning cuppa.

Luckily I have very little caffeine anyway, two green teas a day and that's it really. I actively avoid any medication with it in because it makes my heart race and I don't like it.

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/11/2021 00:03

I might try vicks.

Kalettesarethebest · 01/11/2021 00:05

People will say I’m being irresponsible advising this but the only thing that worked for me was painting under the toenails with some cheap mould and mildew household spray.
I cut a lot of the infected nail off and painted every day for a month. After years of having infected nails, they were gone in a month and now I have nails that I can actually get out in the summer.

RavingAnnie · 01/11/2021 00:19

My DH has just had laser treatment on his fungal nail after having it for years and trying topical stuff, vicks, tea tree, vinegar soaks, two different oral antifungals (one didn't work, the second he had awful allergic reaction to) and probably some things Ive forgotten. The laser has worked! It takes a few sessions and a bit of time, and is expensive, but well worth it.

I doubt that was anything to do with the Listerine, it would probably have fallen off anyway, but keeping it damp probably also softened it.

Some fungal infections do resolve themselves. The same as some viruses do and some bacterial infections. It's just that some don't.

To my mind, any wild and wonderful theories about mouthwash and nasal decongestant are just that: wild and wonderful, and stories of them working are stories of simple coincidence.

Bearnecessity · 01/11/2021 18:23

It was my GP that told me about Vicks.

Hayup · 01/11/2021 18:47

Vicks worked for me. Took about 4 months in total (basically the length of time it takes the nail to grow)

I just rubbed it in to my toenail every morning and night, and all over the cuticle too. My nail changed colour from a yucky yellow to black. I kept it trimmed and as it grew there was a definite change in the thickness of the nail.

I guess they are not immune to wild theories either.
Houseplantmad · 01/11/2021 20:39

My husband had this and tried all sorts of things, some prescription others not. He tried Elastoplast wound spray and it has got rid of it. He liberally sprayed it religiously every day and it did the trick after 15 years of having it.

Otterspotterspocket · 02/11/2021 07:26

My Dutch GP swears by treating topically with sambal oelek paste (google it). Incredibly messy so not for everyone but worked a treat for mine.

Crimpnwave · 02/11/2021 07:33

I used medical alcohol 95%. I applied it twice per day on top of and underneath the nail. I also cit tue nail back as short as possible and kept it clean and dry. It took about 7 months for the infected nail to totally grow out.

Bearnecessity · 02/11/2021 20:06

VanGoghsDog.....wild theories....sounds very dramatic.....if it works, it works....

cptartapp · 02/11/2021 20:11

Had mine ten years. In fact I have several. They improved with the Terbinafine but returned after I stopped, and had been on them for over 12 months. I've given up.

As I said, it's my belief that they don't work, there is only anecdotal evidence and since lots of things do just clear up by themselves it is merely coincidence. Or possibly placebo.

I've tried the Vicks one, did nothing. Coloidal silver - nothing. I admit I've not tried Listerine or bathroom mould spray because I'm not an idiot.

But if there was empirical evidence we'd know and these alleged treatments would be prescribed.

HotPenguin · 02/11/2021 21:00

I took prescription medicine (forget what it was) but I had to go private to get a prescription as my GP was crap and didn't want to know. I later saw a podiatrist who reckoned it wasn't fungal. But maybe the medicine had already cleared it up, I'm not sure.

Spiceup · 02/11/2021 21:19

Have you had it properly diagnosed? I've been treating my feet with various remedies for years. I finally went to a chiropdist this summer who told me it's "just" nail damage and not a fungal infection at all.

It doesn't seem any easier to resolve mind.
