Dd is 12 and asking to shave her legs, I'm sure I was around 14 when I started to shave...just after opinions

BurbageBrook · 27/10/2021 22:26

God, just let her. Why would you care?

clockover · 27/10/2021 22:30

@AnonAnom940

to those asking why does she need to ask ....Surely a child does have to ask because they need someone over 18 to buy the razor.

The thread is about what age you let them shave their legs. Not what age you bought them a razor. These are 2 very different things.

Hellocatshome · 27/10/2021 22:32

Please let her do it as soon as she wants to. I quit playing basketball which I was quite good at because Mum said I was too young to shave my legs and the other players made fun of my hairy legs.

As soon as she asks her body her choice not something I will be giving permission for. I will of course did proper advice and help if she needs it.

Scbchl · 27/10/2021 22:34

Its not really something I have said my daughters can or can't do. I'm not sure exactly when my eldest started as she is much fairer but my 12 year old who has really dark leg hair has been doing it awhile. She was already doing it before last Xmas and I bought her a lady shaver just to ensure she didn't cut herself.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 27/10/2021 22:35

I was about 10 or 11 in year 6. My hair was blonde but all the other girls made such a fuss about me being hairy. I went through puberty, got period etc in Y6 too. I just used my Mum's razor, didn't ask because I knew she'd have said no!

CallMeNutribullet · 27/10/2021 22:35

She's 8 so hasn't asked but of course where it starts to bother her shecan shave. It's her body

Inastatus · 27/10/2021 22:38

My DD never asked me, she just started when she wanted to. Probably around the age of 12 I’d guess.

SecretKeeper1 · 27/10/2021 22:38

Can anyone recommend an electric leg shaver, please?

Pleasedonteliminate · 27/10/2021 22:40

When going to secondary school I started thankfully as i had dark hair and a few that didn't got teased

GoingForAWalk · 27/10/2021 22:41

My DD just did it herself age12 so I bought her her own razor to use. No major discussion was invoked or necessary

GoingForAWalk · 27/10/2021 22:41

Involved

Iliketeaagain · 27/10/2021 22:51

My DD is nearly 12, and I brought it up. Not because I think she should shave, just because I was about her age when I did it with a random razor I found in the house.

I've told her it's absolutely her choice, but to please ask me and I will buy her an electric razor so she doesn't slice her legs to shreds if she decides she wants to shave the hair off. For the moment, she's not in the least bit bothered - she's blond, so you can't see it, but I wanted to pre-empt it coming up so she knows she can ask me if she wants to. Equally she knows she can grow it long enough to plait it if she likes - her body hair, her choice.

MazzleDazzle · 27/10/2021 22:52

Although I didn’t want to draw attention to her body hair and make her feel self conscious, I was worried that she’d use one of my razors without asking and cut herself to ribbons! I bought her an electric lady shave and showed her how to use it, but also explained it was completely up to her whether she wanted to use it at all. She was 13.5, but I think age is irrelevant.

Seriously79 · 27/10/2021 22:56

My DD is only 2, so I've got a while until this happens. But I would possibly advise her to wax.

I've torn my legs to shreds over the years trying to shave them, and even now in my 40's I still can't do it properly.

No matter what razor I use, what cream, gel, moisturiser. If I exfoliate before or not. Every time I shave my legs they bleed, and I come out in a rash.

Waxing is the k my thing that works for me.

MoreThanAnOffDay · 27/10/2021 22:56

When I was 12 my mum got me a lady shave thing. I don't think it had crossed my mind to tbh. But she wanted me to have it for when I was ready.

wolfstarling · 27/10/2021 22:57

My DD was 9. She has quite a lot of hair on her legs. I help her shave whenever she wants.

Snowdropsandbluebells · 27/10/2021 23:05

I was 11 when I did mine with my dad's blunt razor Confused
I'm in my 40s now and thankfully invested in a lumen

I don't think 12 is too young

MrsMiddleMother · 27/10/2021 23:06

Considering a 12 year old won't buy herself a pack of razors of course she'll ask Hmm
I think 12 is a good age, get the tools she needs and show her how to shave then let her get on with it x

BananaPB · 27/10/2021 23:09

If she's old enough to ask then I would say yes.

Depends how dark and hairy the child is imo. Some upper primary school kids will be hairy and want to shave which is ok with me. (I'd probably shave a primary school aged child though)

Sameproblem · 27/10/2021 23:11

My mum made it clear she didn't want me to shave my legs. At 14 I was so tired of being teased at school about being hairy that I bought Immac and started using it secretly in my room. Not that you could keep a lot secret with that smell. Please don't put your daughter in this position.

Seeleyboo · 27/10/2021 23:12

@Hen2018

Why does she have to ask?
This
sarah13xx · 27/10/2021 23:12

I remember my mum didn’t let me when I started secondary school and I used to DREAD P.E so so much every week, just trying to get changed into those tiny wee shorts and hide my legs at all costs while everyone else showed off their hair-free legs and even spoke about shaving 🤦🏼‍♀️😂 If I ever have a girl I’d let her shave from secondary if she wanted to

sarah13xx · 27/10/2021 23:15

@Sameproblem can totally relate to this! I think my mum thought she was helping me in the long run by not letting me but if she had known the constant worry I felt about someone noticing my legs weren’t shaved or saw what I used to go through every week trying to disguise it I’d like to think she’d have changed her mind 😭 I even remember a conversation when I raised it with her again and just about begged her for her to say ‘just wait until the summer when you have a tan, no one will notice then’. I’d never put my child through that now 😢

clockover · 27/10/2021 23:18

Considering a 12 year old won't buy herself a pack of razors of course she'll ask

Asking for razors is not the same as asking to shave your legs
