The fairytale of New York, do you find the lyrics offensive?

I’m Sat listening to the usual bleeped out version of the song on one of the music channels, and thinking as I usually do why do they not leave ‘those’ parts in? Surely it’s just a song? Does anyone actually find it that offensive?

@Rainbowheart1

Not offended, and I don’t need the approval of someone from LGB to decide for me if I should be offended or not.

Everyone finds something offensive.
Just because you are offended, doesn’t mean your right.

Nobody is telling you to “be offended” though, are they?

People, mostly gay (rightly so) find the term hurtful in many cases, and are asking that other (mostly straight) people respect that.

Scbchl · 27/10/2021 22:51

Nope doesn't offend me

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 27/10/2021 23:00

@Iloveallofthem

Whatever next.

Everything. EVERYTHING. Is deemed as as offensive these days. It's so fucking miserable

Totally agree
Sad times.

I don’t find it offensive, isn’t the point of it to be shocking?

Givemethenight · 28/10/2021 00:07

I love it. It's my favourite Christmas song.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 28/10/2021 07:31

Why is everyone so desperate to hear the F slur in a song.

Sad times because an incredibly offensive word has been taken out of a song? Really Confused

blink18two · 28/10/2021 07:37

@EvilRingahBitch

I'm not a gay man so my opinion on whether it's offensive is neither here nor there.
So you don't have a single opinion on anything that doesn't directly correlate with how you identify?
OhPatti · 28/10/2021 12:43

Reading some of these responses makes me feel a lot of people today have lost the ability to see things in the context in which they were/are presented. I would never condone the use of those words generally, but they work within the context of the song imho and it just sounds ludicrous with them blanked out.

Kezzie200 · 28/10/2021 13:04

It's not offensive to me.

We shouldn't ignore that this sort of life exists. If we don't like it we shouldn't ignore it we should face up to it and encourage the charities and governments to support those who suffer from fall out from this sort of situation .

Kezzie200 · 28/10/2021 13:07

Reminds me of when some areas banned Life of Brian in the late 70s and more people went to see it!

Or FGTH and Relax was banned or words changed or something....and it went straight to number one!

If its a reflection of society we should learn from it not delete it as if its not happening

1Week · 28/10/2021 13:14

Why is nobody,on a predominantly women's forum, even considering the impact of the word "slut" on themselves?

It's the same thing, a slur against "unauthorised" sexual activity, and what has rung in many an ear while the fist smashes into their face.

I actually don't care about either word, but it puzzles me why so many women leap to mens defence while ignoring the same type of insult thrown at themselves.

Viviennemary · 28/10/2021 13:21

Fgs its a song. And a good one I dont want it ruined by bleeps. To pander to the pc brigade.

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 28/10/2021 13:25

'The pc brigade'

Who don't want the F slur normalised and used in a song?

You think a whole song is ruined by a missing word yet think others are sensitive because they don't want to hear a derogatory and hateful word while they do their Christmas shopping?

toastofthetown · 28/10/2021 13:26

I'm another one a bit baffled that Mumsnet are incensed by how offensive the word Karen is, yet are equally offended that a slur against a different community is censored. If people who the slur targets say that they don't like it then I respect that.

CornishGem1975 · 28/10/2021 13:28

Nope, not offensive at all. Okay, so it wouldn't be appropriate if it was written today but it's of its time.

Hemingwayscats · 28/10/2021 13:30

Nope.

SoupDragon · 28/10/2021 13:30

I'm not offended by the lyrics but I do think they are right to edit out the homophobic slur. It doesn't matter that it is "of it's time". Many words would be "of their time" and still be completely inappropriate to hear in a song today.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 28/10/2021 13:31

@Danikm151

I don’t find it offensive. The words are in the context of the characters.
This
tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 28/10/2021 13:33

@PolytheneRam

I don't find it offensive at all, because it's subg 'in character'

I do like the alternative lyrics I heard last year though:

"you scumbag, you maggot, you taped over Taggart..."

This is the only acceptable amendment Grin
Glassofshloer · 28/10/2021 13:36

Nope.

Had a row about this with a friend last year (a straight friend, who was convinced the song would lead to homophobic obscenities being screamed in people’s faces, and that it would be a devastating experience for gay people to hear it every year).

My gay family members have zero issue with it, but she knows better, apparently.

cushioncovers · 28/10/2021 13:37

It's about two unhappy drunks having a fight so no I don't find it offensive. It's a Xmas song afaiac 😁

ABCeasyasdohrayme · 28/10/2021 13:40

I know plenty of gay people who have had the f slur used against them, many times when this song has come on and people have 'made jokes' at their expense. Your friend is right, it does happen. Just because your family members are ok with it, it doesn't mean that its the same for everyone.

Arsewangry · 28/10/2021 13:44

No I don't find it offensive, it's from a different time and I can't get myself worked up about it.

Glassofshloer · 28/10/2021 13:48

Well that’s just arseholes for you 🤷🏼‍♀️

It’s a bit like saying violent movies make people violent in real life. Art and life are two separate things.

Should we not ever have any music, films or paintings of things that are unpleasant or wrong? For fear they will be ‘used’ to inspire poor behaviour?

Mysterian · 28/10/2021 13:54

@Arsewangry

It's not from a different time. It's from this Christmas coming up. It'll be played everywhere. From a different time would be a Racey single.
