Free silver or private white crown would be better? 🤔

Who had to get a crown while maternity leave what you decided? The free silver or private white? Mine need to be done, it's one of the big bottom teeth, just before the wisdom teeth. Because maternity leave through nhs would be free but that's the silver one, the dentist said it's a wee bit different process than the private. Other than the color it's any benefit of the white one? Would worth that 3-600 pounds?

I chose to pay for white. Mainly aesthetic reasons. It sounds like it's the same tooth. I am happy with the result!

Usernamemommy · 27/10/2021 15:47

Can I ask how much you had to pay for it? My dentist said just the x rays and stuff like that would cost £170-£200 plus the crown £200 to £400... thanks for answering

I think the last replacement I had was over £200 so that sounds about right. I'd still pay for the white though if you can.

bizboz · 27/10/2021 16:17

I have lots of fillings. They are all white except for silver one which I had after DC2 because it was free and money was tight. That was 8 years ago and I think the silver filling is really obvious so I wish I'd paid for the white one.

roses2 · 27/10/2021 16:19

Silver ones are stronger. The white ones are more susceptible to breaking especially if you grind your teeth like me!

FictionalCharacter · 27/10/2021 19:09

White every time - the silver coloured ones really show and also go dark over time.
Not sure that’s correct these days @roses2 - modern (expensive) materials are extremely strong - I have loads of white composite fillings and crowns and they have all lasted many years, and I’m a tooth grinder too.

LadyCleathStuart · 27/10/2021 19:12

I have white ones but as pp has said they can break quite easily. Look much better though.

Liverbird77 · 27/10/2021 19:13

@Usernamemommy I can't remember because it was quite a while ago. My little boy is almost three and it happened soon after he was born.

I had to have a root canal and then the crown. I want to say it was around £600 all in, but I could t swear to it x

notangelinajolie · 27/10/2021 19:37

I'm a bit confused at those charges. I thought the NHS had a fixed price scale? I had a white crown done 2 weeks ago and I paid NHS Band 3: £282.80

DentalWorries · 27/10/2021 19:42

I had a white one done recently and it is quite big as it has to sit on top of the tooth. I had mine made slightly whiter than the rest of my teeth so that I can whiten my teeth and it will blend it and it does look fairly noticeable.
No way would I have had a silver one.

Usernamemommy · 27/10/2021 20:00

@notangelinajolie wich tooth you had to be done? I think the back ones only offered the silver, for me this is in the very back just before the wisdom tooth. I read on nhs website they offer white for the more noticable tooth.

Thanks for everyone for the opinions 🤗

I have a silver one and it is very blingy when I look in the mirror. I don't think anyone has noticed it because I tend not to open my mouth that wide.

modgepodge · 27/10/2021 20:58

I got a white one and I’m glad cos silver would be really obvious. I have some silver fillings and they’re horrible, I was a skint student at the time so no chance of paying for white. I think on the NHS the white crown is a band 3 fixed payment which is almost £300 (but I thought all the band prices were £0 on NHS maternity exemption). I’m sure I just paid the band 3 price for mine.

Puffinhead · 27/10/2021 21:04

I had this 15 years ago and I ended up paying £500ish for white. It’s actually still going strong today!

I was talking to my (private) dentist recently about replacing it and she suggested going gold! Apparently it’s the best material to use and a dream to work with - but wouldn’t quite suit my ‘image’!!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 27/10/2021 21:06

I have crowns at the front, they're white. I have one at the back, it's silver. I couldn't justify the cost for something no one would see.

Puffinhead · 27/10/2021 21:06

I think it was £500 - can’t quite remember but it was worth every penny. Go white, you don’t want to end up regretting it.

FindingMeno · 27/10/2021 21:08

Silver. Its more hard wearing.

happytoday73 · 27/10/2021 21:08

I got a white one... Kept falling out.. Like every few weeks... Eventually replaced by metal.. Been fine for years

cosyto · 27/10/2021 21:12

Dentist here. Historically white crowns are metal with a layer of porcelain bonded over the top to make it more aesthetic. Whilst these are generally good, and can last many years, yes, they are prone to breaking and chipping, as porcelain is brittle. However the newer materials are much stronger, and look amazing, utilising new technology and materials such as zirconium.
Ask for an emac type crown if you are a grinder. They are much more hard wearing than metal.
Metal is free though!

cosyto · 27/10/2021 21:12

Sorry. Auto- correct , Emax crown

Discwriter · 27/10/2021 21:15

I have a silver one and feel like a pirate. I was too tight with money to pay for a white one, incidentally when I was on mat leave. It annoys me everyday. My dentist said we can change it, so going to change it to the white one. Also now only putting in white fillings.

Gubanc · 27/10/2021 21:24

Amalgam fillings contain mercury. I've got really crappy teeth and had all my amalgam fillings replaced when I was 20-something. Currently 40+ and some might need replacing.
I wouldn't get amalgam.

cosyto · 27/10/2021 23:08

@Gubanc crowns don't contain amalgam

Smallkeys · 27/10/2021 23:11

Get the white I had my fillings changed out and feel better (probably in my head) but was also surprised how happy it made me when brushing my teeth not to see ugly silver teeth :-)
