Free silver or private white crown would be better? 🤔

Who had to get a crown while maternity leave what you decided? The free silver or private white? Mine need to be done, it's one of the big bottom teeth, just before the wisdom teeth. Because maternity leave through nhs would be free but that's the silver one, the dentist said it's a wee bit different process than the private. Other than the color it's any benefit of the white one? Would worth that 3-600 pounds?

@cosyto thanks to write here. Thankfully Im not a grinder, my teeth just generally chipping and breaking but it's like this for years. I always looked after them very well, but it is what it is. I think it's more like genetic, my mom had even worse teeth than me. So put aside the color thing, for the quality what would be better? 🤔 I read on a couple of sites the silver is stronger, but I'd think for that much money the white would be as good as the silver.. deep inside I want to go with the white even if no one would see, I'd know and it would annoying me.. appt is months away so I'll put money on the side.. 😅 I know I should have asked the dentist about this but he told me sooooo many things, and obviously every question coming up after I left.. 🙄

So it's unlikely the the free maternity one would be pure silver, more likely a non precious metal alloy. ( cost of precious metal very expensive).
I'd say, given the choice I'd go for a zirconia based white crown, something like lava or emax. Your dentist will be familiar with both and can recommend the best for your personal circumstances.

If you can't see it if you smile or laugh in a mirror, go for silver.
@notangelinajolie wich tooth you had to be done? I think the back ones only offered the silver, for me this is in the very back just before the wisdom tooth. I read on nhs website they offer white for the more noticable tooth.

Thanks for everyone for the opinions 🤗
It is on the top near the back. Same as you - not wisdom but the one next to it. I do have a wide smile (like Julia Roberts) and when I smile you can just about see it. A metal one would be visible so maybe that is why I was able to get a white one. Maybe go in with a big grin next time Grin

I had a filling (slightly different I know) just after dd was born and they were going to do it silver until I happened to mention I was breastfeeding. They straight away switched to white.

@notangelinajolie

I'm a bit confused at those charges. I thought the NHS had a fixed price scale? I had a white crown done 2 weeks ago and I paid NHS Band 3: £282.80
Yep, paid the same for my white crown two weeks ago.

@sabrinatheteenagemortal probably because amalgam contains mercury. Silver crown dosen't. For some reason he didn't offered white crown through nhs. He meant to be? 🤔🤔 I'll ask that... 🤔 but in the end I'll go with white anyway, I'd regret the silver.. appt is months away if somebody dosen't cancel before me (I hope somebody will Im afraid the tooth wont survive, already 2 piece missing from it and it has big cracks....) so I just put some money on the side for this. Thanks everyone 🤗🤗🤗

@Puffinhead

I had this 15 years ago and I ended up paying £500ish for white. It’s actually still going strong today!

I was talking to my (private) dentist recently about replacing it and she suggested going gold! Apparently it’s the best material to use and a dream to work with - but wouldn’t quite suit my ‘image’!!

I have a double back tooth with a gold crown on it. My dentist recommended gold as it is stronger and more lasting. It's been fine and doesn't really show and no one has ever commented on it. It's about 8 years old now.
