Returning for the third year and back by popular demand - well, doyen of the WAG-world @AnneKipankitoo has been pestering me to start one.

Change your name to something Hallowe'eny and post, telling us what your previous name was if you like and especially if you've chosen a pun on your old name. Leave it at that if you prefer, or post whatever you like in the spirit of Hallowe'en fun and shenanigans.

No voting, no prizes, all welcome in all your gory glory.

It's time to swap our pearls for skulls and clutch them instead. Come and join us...if you dare.

And I invoke the spirit of MNHWOOoooo: RELEASE THOSE HALLOWE'EN EMOJIS!!!

It 'were the Celts what started it' here, more than 2000 years ago @TrickorSweets21 - it was known as Samhain. We can't blame you Americans, much as some like to! Halloween Wink

The Celts lived throughout what we now call Ireland, Britain and Northern France - some of us are still here! They celebrated Samhain to mark the end of summer, the harvest and start of winter. Druids led the ceremonies and bonfires were lit to ward off any evil spirits amongst the ghosts of the dead who were believed to revisit on Samhain.

We can however blame/thank the Americans for pumpkins and trick-or-treating! It used to be hollowed-out turnips and swedes here. Halloween Envy

TheWOooWOooWOoonlyMrsM · 27/10/2021 17:46

After the invasions and occupations of the Romans here, then the Saxons and others, Christianity arrived and Samhain eventually became All-hallows-even in about 800AD, then Hallow Eve, then Hallowe'en, and finally Halloween. So there you have it in a nutshell, @TrickorSweets21 - we can't blame you guys. Halloween Wink

AnneKipankiWOO · 27/10/2021 19:12

It was really difficult carving a turnip .

AnneKipankiWOO · 27/10/2021 19:13

We used to dook for apples , try to catch treacle scones.
If you went out guising you had to do a song or a poem before you got any money.
The big boys always kept it all . 🤬

iklboogiemaninthecloset · 27/10/2021 19:58

Carving a turnip / swede was WAY harder than a pumpkin. They looked scarier too - like shrunken heads. Or that horrible thing off of out of Rupert The Bear.

KurtWildeWitchOfTheWoods · 27/10/2021 20:02

My dad used to carve the turnips for us, they were so hard to hollow out! Then he'd chase us around the garden with one in each hand. Which was pretty scary actually!

I like how the biscuit has a witches hat too Halloween Biscuit

@TheWOooWOooWOoonlyMrsM

You have outdone yourself with your Halloween history lesson...I thank you very much.

Turnips, you say? Thank goodness the Americans came and saved day with pumpkins.

No wonder we in the US south love us some turnip greens to eat with chopped up bits of the root...our relatives brought them over from the old countryHalloween Grin

@AnneKipankiWOO that's a sad story about the mean boys taking the money!
Thank goodness we Americans came along when we did and decided to use sweets insteadGrin...although, I do recall being mugged for my treats bag by some older boys one year!Halloween ShockHalloween Hmm
