Just feeling a bit let down

Not sure what I'm after here to be honest, just feeling a bit fragile and a bit sad.

Basically I've had horrible painful swelling for a couple of weeks (assumed it was part of an ongoing problem- it turns out it's not) and I now have a hard lump in the same place which drs have suggested may be cancer and have fast tracked me to have a scan. I told my manager everything. On friday I recieved my date for the scan, it's this week and work wont allow me to take it off as they cant get cover.

Just feeling a bit unimportant as this could potentially be quite serious.

I used to work in a scanning department. Obviously your work should let you have time off and you've every right to just ring in sick. But I'm sensing you aren't going to do that, so I'd ring the scanning department in the morning and explain your situation. I'm sure they'll try to accommodate you.

I used to be amazed with 2 week wait patients.. we'd ring them with an urgent appointment and get people saying' oh I go to the hairdressers every Wednesday, so can't do that day', ' oh I have bingo/coffee with friends/corns removed/ trip to Sainsburys etc etc every Monday, can't do that day' . It amazed me, we're looking for cancer here! But we still tried to fit people in where possible, I'm sure they'll help you.

PyjamaFan · 24/10/2021 20:20

Yes, please go to the appointment. No job is worth this sort of risk.

SnarkyBag · 24/10/2021 20:25

You have a responsibility to your own children to take care of your health. This really isn’t something to cancel to avoid confrontation with work. Will you keep cancelling if the appointment always falls on a day inconvenient to your employer?

Don't be ridiculous, of course you go for the scan. What would they do if you had Covid and had to isolate. No one is indispensable.

FreeChuro · 24/10/2021 20:37

I'll speak to her tomorrow when I get in, send me 'big girl pants' vibes please

I’m so glad you’re going to speak up OP. My dad died of cancer that was diagnosed very late on. Please please for the sake of all those who love you go to the appointment. No job is worth your life.

Newhorizon21 · 24/10/2021 20:41

You have given your boss notice that you have to attend an urgent/2 week wait referral for an investigation. Her response is not appropriate, she does not have the authority here to 'allow' you time off. Your health is the priority.

Send the email to your boss as advised above, include the date of your first conversation about your test & tell her again in writing that you are unable to attend work on the day of your test.

Keep your appointment. Take yourself to lunch after your test x

HerRoyalWitchyness · 24/10/2021 20:43

Please please don't be a pushover with this. It's so important to have this scan. Do not under any circumstances cancel it!

Bluetrews25 · 24/10/2021 20:44

You've got those pants in your wardrobe, along with the T shirt that says 'assertive when I need to be'. Get them both on tomorrow.
Sending best wishes.

Nothingfallingdowntoday · 24/10/2021 20:44

Please go to this appointment. Your employer is an absolute disgrace if they do not support you to attend. Even without their support you must go.

whenwillthemadnessend · 24/10/2021 20:45

OP you should never give more of yourself to a job than they’d give to you
Do not prioritise your job over your health when they wouldn’t do the same for you

Agree agree agree

Bonbon21 · 24/10/2021 20:53

So.. in these exact circumstances your boss would NEVER take the time off... ya think??
You... YOU ... are the most important person in the world to your kids.
YOU are irreplaceable to them.
Its your managers job to manage.. let her get on with that.. while you look after YOU.

Animood · 24/10/2021 20:57

Get your doctor to sign you off with stress and chill at home.

Fuck work.

billy1966 · 24/10/2021 20:59

OP,

Your obligations to your child mean you HAVE to attend this appointment.

So many people have had delays getting much needed care.

This test is very important and your manager is a disgrace to make this a problem.

This is not an organisation that has your back.

Your priority is your health, your future, your family.

@FreeChuro

I'll speak to her tomorrow when I get in, send me 'big girl pants' vibes please
I'll fucking come & tell her for you!!!

How horribly hurtful from someone you though was a friend & had your back.

TELL her you will NOT be in that day, end of. She can do with that information what she likes, I suggest getting cover or arranging that she's available to cover.

Do NOT miss your appointment!! Not under ANY circumstances.

I hope it's something easily sorted 🤞🏼💐

FreeChuro · 24/10/2021 21:06

You're all being so nice you'll make me cry! Thank you everyone, I feel less crazy now

Hr will have a policy, copy them in GO TO YOUR SCAN

CaramelEmporium · 24/10/2021 22:12

I’m not one to comment much on here….but OP, you have to go to your appointment. Imagine you don’t….and it is cancer….and you don’t catch it in time. Is your manager going to raise your kids?

Sorry if that’s brutal but I can’t believe you’re even hesitating. You have to put yourself first - and I am the first one to be a bit of a pushover at work - please please go.

grapewine · 24/10/2021 22:15

Please, please go. This is serious. If it is cancer, catching it early could make all the difference. Good luck.

catsandhens · 24/10/2021 22:19

this is ridiculous op, your work is being awful! also have they actually checked if they can get cover or just assumed they cant? because I would absolutely move things around to cover for a colleague in this scenario so if you feel comfortable you can tell them you are happy for them to share why they need the cover if necessary. But regardless of anything else do not miss an appointment to check for cancer, not for any reason

WitchDancer · 24/10/2021 22:25

Have you told your boss that's it's a scan for suspected cancer? I can't believe that they won't give you the time off, even if it's just for the time that it takes you to get there and back.

You need to put yourself first - it's serious enough for a two week referral so get yourself there!

I'm hoping it goes well Thanks

Minibea · 24/10/2021 22:25

Please go to the appt OP. I know it isn’t exactly the same but I’m awaiting a MRI scan to rule out something and couldn’t make the one appointment they sent to me as I was away on holiday at the time and the hospital has taken that as a refusal to attend at all and kicked me off the waiting list 🙄 meaning I’ve had to be re-referred for the scan and have gone to the bottom of the list again. Please don’t risk that for yourself out of a misguided sense of loyalty to your employer.

3luckystars · 24/10/2021 22:29

Well you have to go to the appointment so your workplace can call it whatever they like, you won’t be there.
You can get a very for the day from the hospital/doctor. If you broke your leg or had an accident, they would figure something out. This is also an emergency appointment, but you have kindly given them a few days notice.
I would love to another job once you get the all clear.

3luckystars · 24/10/2021 22:30

Cert for the day that should say.

KitchenKrisis · 24/10/2021 22:30

Hi op, I've had to live with lumps, 8 weeks on a fast track scan, every day living in absolute fear and then it was cancelled and moved again.

I've had this a few times with various issues. I actually feel upset that you've been so so lucky to get a scan so quickly and you won't go.
Who will cover these classes if your literally not with us any longer.

The whole NHS is in absolute crisis and chaos I know someone dying right now who can't even get in a special room due to covid and when I think of how much more trouble the NHS will have to go too if you leave this to get worst when you've been one of the lucky ones to get seen Angry
