Shocked at supermarket price increase!

I know people have been talking about it for a while but we've recently had a big expense so am trying to claw some Monet back by being more sensible for a while with the food shopping as it's our biggest expense.
Thought I would pop to Asda last night rather than sainsburys as it's supposed to be cheaper and for a small trolley shop I was £78 (only two expensive items were a big box of washing powder and a whole chicken for Sunday dinner).
Filled my car on the way out and it cost me £75, I'm sure it was always around the £65 mark until recently.
We are so lucky that we don't have to worry about the pennies too much these days which is a massive relief after years of debt and being skint but prices do seem really scary just now.
When I'm shopping I don't notice any big differences on individual items but added up there's a big increase.

My weeks shop is about £90 at Asda but less than £60 at Aldi. Apparently Asda have had one of the biggest price increases.

Sell the Monet!

ellaballoo · 23/10/2021 17:18

I thought that at Asda yesterday .
Since when was a bottle of Appletizer £2.75 ?
I thought it was about a pound !

So many things have shot up in price and not bu 5 or 10 pence. I've seen prices go up bu 25p, 50p it all adds up. I always try to shop around, but even the basic/savers items have gone up alot.

daisy2002 · 23/10/2021 17:25

I normally buy a 3kg bag of pasta from asda & thats gone up by 71p.
Thats a huge increase on one item.
Tescos have added 10p to the 6 pints of milk.
I shop and try to buy things on offer but even the offers aren't as good as they used to be.

Welcome to brexit Britain. Land of opportunity.

Goshitstricky · 23/10/2021 17:29

Yep, usually shop at Aldi and spend £100 a week which lasts all week..

Decided to go to Tesco last night for a change and it was £150 and I'm sure I'll need to go again before the weeks out to top up on milk and bread. 🤦🏻‍♀️

MintJulia · 23/10/2021 17:29

I seldom buy brands, cook from scratch and shop in Tesco.

Bread and fruit are up a little but otherwise I haven't noticed other food increases. Coffee, butter, veg(seasonal), meat, fish, dairy all seem to be steady.
Diesel has shot up though. Sad

DentalWorries · 23/10/2021 17:32

I noticed the petrol the other day. I usually put in £40 and get a full tank but it was about halfway between 3/4 and full

Badabingbadabum · 23/10/2021 17:36

I shopped for the first time in a couple months in Lidl on Thursday and didn’t notice any increases. I suspect not being a meat-eater could have been a major factor in that. I saw their own-label of baked beans were 22 pence a tin which I thought was incredibly bargainacious compared to the “leading brand”

CorrBlimeyGG · 23/10/2021 17:37

Welcome to brexit Britain. Land of opportunity.

Tory Britain. Where levelling up means taking £20 a week from those with the least, and giving multi million pound contracts to mates with the very most.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 23/10/2021 17:43

I went to Asda yesterday and noticed exactly the same
A couple of items have been repackaged and price increased by 25p each!
Every penny counts as I'm on long term disability benefits which have been frozen for years

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 23/10/2021 17:49

I've watched petrol go up by 10p/litre this week.

ssd · 23/10/2021 17:59

Life is definitely getting more expensive

gogohm · 23/10/2021 18:01

Petrol at my local supermarket has gone up 5p this week alone. I shop at lidl and haven't notice significant increases

@Goshitstricky

You need to look at what you bought. There's no way Tesco is that much more on like for like trolley of shopping, but there is much more choice, so you tend to buy different things & more

This democracy thing is a real bugger !
Goshitstricky · 24/10/2021 08:56

@SpookyPumpkinPants - it's because Tesco has huge gaps in stock at the moment so all the value stuff I would normally get which is the same price as Aldi wasn't available so I had to 'brand up' it doesn't really matter though, I won't be going back to Tesco, it was sheer curiosity to see how varied the supermarkets are these days.

lovingnewme · 24/10/2021 15:41

Life post Brexit is going to be very expensive, and I guess will lead to a wider wealth gap in the UK.
It's really sad, I'm gutted that I'm going to be poorer and I'm reasonably comfortable (touch wood) and I'm gutted for poorer families already struggling.
2021 has been horrible and I can't see 2022 being much better as the Brexit implications really kick in.

julieca · 24/10/2021 15:46

Yes I have noticed everything going up. Pasta, cheese, washing up liquid, washing up powder, chicken, sugar, biscuits, tea, etc. All a small amount each, but it adds up.

This. We will manage (just), but lots won't. All those millions Boris promised from Brexit eh? And the so called "levelling up" which apparently means telling employers they really should pay their employees a little more....

@JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue

It went up around here when panic buying started but it’s never gone back down. I assumed it was just the petrol stations cashing in.
MatildaIThink · 24/10/2021 16:22

Prices have gone up on some items, other items have had packet sizes shrink and other items have not changed at all so it will really depend on how your shop breaks down.

My gut feeling is that fresh green veg is up around 10-15%, no change on frozen. Meat and fish apart from chicken seems to be up 10-20%. Dairy, eggs, root veg and some fruit seems the same, imported fruit such as strawberries and blueberries are up.

Bread my husband makes, flour is a bit more expensive but not a huge amount. Cleaning and other household items seem the same. Petrol is up a lot, £1.20 a few months ago to £1.46 last week.

From what I gather ready meals and other processed food, sauces in jars etc. Are up due to increases in both labour and transport costs, as is alcohol, although we don't drink at home.

It looks like a real mixed bag, people who eat a lot of meat and imported food could be looking at a 15-20% increase over the last six months, other might only be facing a rise of a few percent.

degsydoodoos · 24/10/2021 16:28

Everything is creeping up.
Petrol is over £1.40 a litre, the dearest I've ever known!
Supermarkets are putting insidious little price increases like 2p or 5p on an item so you don't notice it individually but overall your bill is £££ dearer.
Items that used to be (eg) 99p on offer, are now £1.25
There are vanishingly few old fashioned offers like buy one get one free, buy one get one half price, etc. Now it's all £2.50 each or £4.50 for two.
Up till a year or so ago, I always found Aldi to be markedly cheaper than the likes of Tesco. Now, hardly anything is cheaper there.

During the first lockdown, I was splashing out on groceries (as we weren't spending much on other luxury, and we also had an adult DC move home) and about £100 a week was getting me LOADS of treats etc.
Fast forward 18 months and I'm trying to cut back/scrimp, but still spending £100 for not very much at all!
