Low sugar snack ideas

miniwolf · 22/10/2021 16:53

DS has been advised to cut back on sugar, especially between meals. He's a snacker! Beyond breadsticks and veg I'm struggling for ideas - any child friendly low sugar snack suggestions welcome!

Nuts, lumps of cheese, Greek Yoghurt. I make cheese scones using ground almonds which are tasty! I also like Cheesies, which are expensive so a treat every so often!

FlowerySusan · 22/10/2021 17:07

Peanut butter and apple

SheWoreYellow · 22/10/2021 17:08

Peanut butter on rice cakes

RavenclawsRoar · 22/10/2021 17:09

Cheese
Egg (boiled eggs keep in the fridge and are an easy snack)
Rice cakes with cream cheese or peanut butter
Nuts
Soup/mug shots (can be very carby so check- not sure about sugar. Or make home made versions).

WakeUpLockie · 22/10/2021 17:11

Some tips for minimising sugar spikes: pair sugary stuff with a fiber or protein (don't eat carbs on their own). Treat carbs as a condiment (ie a tiny part of a meal). Eat fruits whole only. Pulses are good for glucose levels even though people think they're carby, as they're high fibre.

So apple with a nut butter is a good one, but people on MN will freak about the sugar in an apple. It's fine IMO.
Hummus is good.
Yoghurt.
What they all said really!

Palavah · 22/10/2021 17:11

Peanut butter or hummus or cheese or cream cheese and apple slices or celery or cucumber or baby tomatoes or carrots or pepper slices

Plain yoghurt with cinnamon

Falafel

miniwolf · 22/10/2021 17:41

Apples and other fruit are high in sugar though surely?

What age range is your son? Would he eat oat muffins? I got a great recipe from What Mummy Makes ( blueberry breakfast muffins, also savoury muffins with bacon) I don't add any sugar to ours and oats might be more filling for him. I'm not much of a baker but I make a batch of these on weds and sun each week.

I have a little one though. If he's older he might not be so into this kind of snack.

Wildheartsease · 22/10/2021 17:54

Hard boiled eggs
Cold omlette (Spanish style?)
Ham/Salami/Chorizo
Cheese (cold in cubes or melted and eaten with raw veg)
Nuts
Olives
Pork Scratchings
Of fruits: berries are the least sugary.

@miniwolf hi op try this link. What Mummy Makes is on FB and IG I think but the above recipe is very similar for the blueberry version.

Have you also thought about quesadillas? (Two wraps, ham/,cheese in between, fried lightly in a pan, then cut into fingers/quarters?) that idea is from "Feed Your Family for £20"

Bloatstoat · 22/10/2021 19:49

Following with interest.
@PaperMonster do you have a recipe for the cheese scones with ground almonds please?

Impossiblecauses · 22/10/2021 19:51

realfood.tesco.com/step-by-step/3-ingredient-mini-egg-muffins.html

These worked well for us with a bit of ham or cheese on top x

PaperMonster · 22/10/2021 20:04

@Bloatstoat absolutely!

50g grated cheese
100g of ground almonds/almond flour
2 eggs
1tsp baking powder
1tbsp double cream

Just mix all together; I usually get about six from this. Bung them in the oven on 200 for 20 mins. Store in the fridge when cool.

careerchangeperhaps · 22/10/2021 20:07

Nuts
Cheese (Babybel)
