That was intended for ImUninsultable sorry - not got to grips with replying just yet!

5128gap · 22/10/2021 12:39

@ImUninsultable

Why do you all have to have the same thing for breakfast?

That sounds like a silly made up food rule to me.

It isnt like dinner where you're cooking a big meal and cant be doing several. Its breakfast. If someone wants porridge and someone else wants eggs, that's just 2 pots. Or someone might just fancy toast or melon or yoghurt.

You dont need to have a rule that breakfast must all be the same.

My kids can choose form eggs, pancakes, sausages, toast, yoghurt, melon or porridge on weekdays. They can have any combo. Weekends I throw in french toast or waffles.

It's the easiest meal of the day!

Is that all? Mine get to choose from all of that plus meat and three veg, a selection of French pastries a Devonshire cream tea, a full wedding buffet and chicken vindaloo.
SpikeDearheart · 22/10/2021 12:42

Ooh the mood hoovers are out and about today! Maybe they all had fun sponge for pudding last night?

OP my DS is a similar age and regularly demands pasta Bolognese for breakfast, though I've yet to oblige! Your DD had sophisticated tastes Wink

Greyeverywhere · 22/10/2021 12:42

I agree with that rule op. If it's a cooked breakfast that someone wants then unless someone else wants cereal or toast then I'm only cooking one thing I.e eggs or pancakes..I'm not going to be stood there cooking three different things, I'm the family maid.
If someone else wants to cook their own thing then that's fine too.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 22/10/2021 12:45

Some people on here need to give their head a wobble. How can such a lighthearted thread cause such nastiness in people.

Kotatsu · 22/10/2021 12:46

While they're little, or if that's a family meal I think it's great.

And I love gherkins, and the only reason we don't have pickled beetroot more often is that it requires careful eating so I (or the kids) don't stain things we don't want stained.

Somehow my youngest has self-imposed the breakfast/dinner foods rule - possibly extrapolated from the fact I won't let them have cereal any time other than breakfast!

These days, they generally make their own breakfast, so they can have whatever they want that's in the house. Except Sundays, when we do waffles/pancakes/something else nice together.

Actually lolled at this Grin

@5128gap GrinGrinGrin - how unimpressive, your poor children. You really ought to consider a better offering.

SpikeDearheart · 22/10/2021 12:48

I still think wistfully of the posh international hotel breakfast where I had shrimp and vegetable noodles with kimchi, followed by some sort of German cake-bread. It was immense.

CherryHug · 22/10/2021 12:52

During the first lockdown, my then 7 year old DS asked for a crumpet for breakfast. All fine. He then looked in the fridge and asked if he could have a tomato with it. I couldn't think of a reason why not Grin

Weirdlynormal · 22/10/2021 12:55

@MrsJBaptiste

so if one kid asks for melon with yoghurt and porridge, and another asks for pancakes, eggs, sausages and toast... you'd make it all to order?

Yep 👍

But we're also a house that might have 2 or 3 different main meals if we all fancy something different. Why would I want to eat something I don't really like?

Christ on a bike, that's running a restaurant or talking shite
Weirdlynormal · 22/10/2021 12:56

OP your DD might like to travel to Japan, pickled veg for breakfast would fit right in!

ShirleyPhallus · 22/10/2021 12:57

If one wants porridge and on wants eggs, it doesnt require any extra work for me. Beat eggs and shove in microwave. Heat porridge on stove.

I mean, that’s LITERALLY twice the work. That’s two dishes instead of one, how can you say it’s no extra work?!

Twice the work that you don't have to do, why are you so worked up about it?

Im really enjoying this thread. Its almost as good as the threads asking what people offer house guests that are sleeping over.

I am guessing that its about supporting the kids to try a wide variety of foods?

When I was little around a million years ago, we used to go posh shopping on Oxford Street about 4 times a year. We went by bus and had to get up very early to go and part of ther fun was that we had breakfast at Lyons Corner House. The rules were that if I got up and went out without a fuss, I could have ANYTHING I wanted for breakfast. My choice was always tomato juice and a chocolate cream eclair.

Id put money on it being the latter.

ThatNameAgainItsMrPlow · 22/10/2021 13:11

Bet you didn’t think this light-hearted thread was going to turn out this way, op.

Itsnotdeep · 22/10/2021 13:17

Whatever works for you OP.

I think when another child comes along though, you may have to re-think your system a little bit.

fwiw mine all eat the same dinner , and the same brunch at weekends, but get what they want during the week (they are old enough to get it themselves). I have only ever had black coffee for breakfast.

SunshineCake1 · 22/10/2021 13:18

Sometimes I'd let my primary aged kids have their dessert before their savoury. The first time they thought I had lost the plot but it was great fun and every time they still ate their main dinner. Have fun with food.

AliceTheCamelHasFiveHumps · 22/10/2021 13:21

@NigelSlatersXmasTaters

Your bread is kept in a drawer?! Shock
Yes, we have those big pull out drawers - and it lives in the basket with bready items like wraps and bagels :) like the picture, but we have everyday food items in there. A bit like a pantry but in a drawer iyswim?? hate stuff like toasters, breadbins, biscuit jars etc being out on the side.

I did wonder why it was an issue for your 22 year old to choose breakfast? Grin Adjusts glasses........

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 22/10/2021 13:23

Porridge with pickles and beetroot sounds like the kind of thing they’d offer you in a hostel in Eastern Europe. But I applaud the creativity.

My kid is currently watching the Cocomelon breakfast song and they’re having pancakes, eggs, bacon, muffins etc. I feel bad I only gave her Cheerios this morning.
