@WormYourHonour

This fun little thread turned a bit shit didn't it?

What happened to light-hearted and silly threads on Mumsnet? Can't we have any of them anymore?

Also...

If you have pot noodle on chips, strain the pot noodle before you put it on the chips.. 😜😂

Yeah.

How about accept people choose to organise their family breakfasts differently without feeling the need to criticise/see it as critical of their own method? Novel concept I know....

But pot noodle on chips? Surely you must serve them separately so you can dip the chips without them becoming soggy? (caveat... I've never had pot noodle and chips.)Grin

WormYourHonour · 22/10/2021 11:36

@MRex

I'm also feeling a bit weird that it seems I'm the only one doing porridge in the microwave. Oats in, milk in, 90 secs on high, leave to stand a minute then stir in honey and cinnamon / fruits / nut butter / whatever is requested. Bowl in dishwasher after eating. Save yourselves a pan wash ladies!
I use a mug: 40g porridge oats 10g sugar 10g powdered milk. Add hot water and stir. Home made instant porridge. Serve with whatever you like... Cucumber, gherkins, sausage, pot noodle or spaghetti.

IKR. I was just sharing a silly anecdote, in the attempt to bring a smile to someone's day, and maybe hear of other "unusual" combinations their kids have come up with

but no... :(

That's how I took it too.

Like when my daughter decided that a slice of cheese on toast and a slice of jam on toast would make a nice sandwich... And she was right...

ImUninsultable · 22/10/2021 11:40

No, you were virtue signalling with your "oh, we're not teaching her silly food rules. She can have pudding first if she wants."

But then, "they vent have toast or porridge. It must be the same."

TuftyMarmoset · 22/10/2021 11:45

You need a porridge bowl @ImUninsultable! I’ve got this one and it’s got the markings for how much oats and liquid to put in. And don’t microwave it on the top setting (1000w on ours - I do it on 600). Scrambled eggs in the microwave are certainly easy but taste much less nice than ones done slowly in the pan IMO, whereas there isn’t really a difference in taste for porridge.

fine, you're right. my daily convenience is definitely a weird food rule.
OP posts:
ImUninsultable · 22/10/2021 11:49

The reason most of us dont fivd pudding first is we dont want them to fill up on that.
If they eat their full meal, of the food they need to be healthy, and then only eat half their pudding then that's fine.
If they eat all their pudding and then only eat half their actual meal, that's bad.

So what you call a silly food rule, I call good parenting.

NigelSlatersXmasTaters · 22/10/2021 11:49

Your bread is kept in a drawer?! Shock

Kanaloa · 22/10/2021 11:50

If the husband is so desperate for a bit of toast instead of porridge he could prepare himself a piece of toast? I know it sounds radical but that would work.

Most parents decide what their kids eat and the family eat the same thing. I have four kids, no way am I doing an omelette for ds11, scrambled eggs on toast for dd10, porridge for ds8 and Nutella on toast with a side or gherkins for dd6.

TaraR2020 · 22/10/2021 11:52

I see the fun police are on this thread Hmm

GreyhoundG1rl · 22/10/2021 11:53

@Thesearmsofmine

It sounds so strict that everyone just eat the same at every single meal, the very opposite of no made up food rules tbh.
Well, quite Confused

The OP has already established that her DH is at liberty to make himself some toast without being shot for insurrection.

It really amazes me that even on an obviously light hearted thread like this, the dicks still come out in force.

Imposterish · 22/10/2021 11:59

Hello! It doesn’t matter what the substance of your rule is. Same things or same meal or whatever.

The point is: you said you don’t really do made up food rules. And yet you yourself have a food rule that you have made up to suit yourself/your family. Which is what folks do!

ErrolTheDragon · 22/10/2021 12:00

Yes, it's funnier than the OPs original post.

@ErrolTheDragon

Grin totally

toomuchlaundry · 22/10/2021 12:03

@ImUninsultable but making porridge and cooking someone else eggs is more work than just cooking one pot of porridge. You also need to have all the ingredients in the house too if you are offering other options such as melon.

toomuchlaundry · 22/10/2021 12:05

Talking of melon we had melon pizza once courtesy of DS! Wouldn't recommend it!

That's great for you.

But my DD when given the free choice of breakfast chose porridge and vegetables. The next time she might choose pancakes and maple.

And when she has her bit of cake in her lunch box, it gets eaten, alongside her tomatoes, carrots, peppers and sandwich, and might leave a cherry tomato behind... Other times there might be half a jaffa cake left and no sandwich. So I really don't care if she "fills up" on her cake first and then doesn't finish one of her cherry tomatoes at lunch. Because at dinner she might be given veggie curry and rice and eat all/most of that. And sometimes she might just eat the rice... but other times she'll ignore the rice.

So I call providing a healthy balanced diet that is viewed over the day/week and allowing DD to make choices good parenting.

🤷

Now had the porridge been savoury - you could have said you had Chinese porridge (congee) with pickles. Love it!!

Doesn't that depend on what they eat for pudding and what the main meal is?

So if the main meal is chips (which has to be served with gherkins and pickled onions) then getting them to eat the pudding first of an orange isn't a bad idea.

GrouchyKiwi · 22/10/2021 12:22

Thanks, OP. I now really need a Norwegian-style breakfast, with bread and ham and cheese (and weird not-cheese), and pickled vegetables. YUM.

MouseholeCat · 22/10/2021 12:32

I don't know why people find it so weird for everyone to eat the same thing at breakfast?! That's a standard concept for other mealtimes if someone is cooking.

DH and I make our own breakfasts so they may be different, but I'm not a chef and I'm sure as hell not cooking to order.

OP, this is a cute story. People on Mumsnet are so gripey when it comes to food.

boreduser · 22/10/2021 12:35

If OP has a 22m/o it's likely that they have a pretty young family. Who's cooking the eggs, pancakes, and sausages every weekday if any other kids all want something different?

Genuinely great if that works for you and that you give your kids choice - equally it might not be feasible to make 3, 4, 5 separate cooked breakfasts daily if the children are too young to do it themselves.

Choice between cereal/toast/fruit seems reasonable enough for a weekday, with a majority vote on something fancy at the weekend.

Absolutely not trying to criticise what you do! But speaking as someone who only has to look after myself, that sounds like a lot of work.
