Dd wants a (in my opinion) rubbish present for Christmas.

Florencenotflo · 21/10/2021 09:02

Dd is only 5 and already doing her Christmas list. She asks for the (attached) present every time we go into the toy shop and has even asked to buy it from her own money.

I am usually quite happy for let her spend her money on things she chooses, but I think this is really rubbish! And I know it will be top of her list again this year. Our budget this year for Dd is around £100 on presents for Christmas so to spend £40 of that on one present seems daft. The reviews of it are terrible, the case is pretty flimsy (not really usable as a suitcase) and the contents are mainly paper.

But at the end of the day, she's 5, it will make her happy, do I just suck it up?

(Plus, I can now see why my parents never bought me a Mr Frosty for Christmas when I was a child, although I'm still salty about it 😂)

DO NOT BUY A MR FROSTY

I too had the Mr Frosty disappointment year after year so as an adult, I bought one, it was shite.

You couldn't get any slushy ice from it. Even with the ice defrosted a bit. It was so hard to turn the handle, even superman would have had trouble.

Very disappointed.

I would buy her the original case wants. She will not want any other case, even better quality. To her it would be a poor imitation.

@68degreesnorth

I wouldn't. It's junk - and will only create yet more plastic landfill a few months later. Buy something that lasts. Just my penny's worth 😅
This. My kids know they won't get any plastic crap. We get them the odd plastic toy if we're sure it will be played with for a long time and not break after 5 minutes (e.g. they've got lego and a couple of dolls and action figures) but it's a hard no to anything that I expect to be in landfill within months.
Goldbar · 21/10/2021 09:51

I'd really struggle with that, sorry. Most tat I could live with if my DC really wanted it but that and the pooping unicorn thingies are a step too far!

It's big as well so not easily shoved out of sight in a toy box.

@Blackmagicqueen

Yes and agree with the mr frosty references. I never got it and always remember how i asked for it and my parents fot me other stuff they probably deemed more useful! I don't remember that just the disappointment of not getting frosty! They bloody worked back then too not like today's excuse for a cone machine!
Do cone machines not work? DS has been switching between wanting a cone machine or a slush puppy machine. This thread is making me realise that may be his Mr Frosty Shock

I wanted this. More than I’ve ever wanted anything…

I never got it and I remember being so gutted - I was fortunate enough to get other lovely presents though!

Get it for her OP. It’ll make her Christmas 🎄

Lokdok · 21/10/2021 09:56

Get it for her!! Mine wanted similar at that age and got it. She got soo much use out of it. Plus a kid asking for something they can tidy stuff away into is never a bad idea. I thought it would be some massive noisy atrocious toy.

BuffyFanForever · 21/10/2021 09:57

Who doesn’t still feel upset about Mr Frosty?! Go on get her the thing she really wants as it’s in your budget!

Kiduknot · 21/10/2021 09:57

Another potential Mr frosty support group member here!

My daughters disney princess case was the chocolate coin maker. We bought it, it was used once. It was crap.

Both situations opposite sides of the —chocolate— coin

Vargas · 21/10/2021 09:58

Such a tricky one. This has happened twice to me, once when my 6yo ds wanted a hideous Power Rangers thing with terrible reviews. DH thought we should suck it up and buy it. It was awful, didn't work properly and was a massive disappointment. Second one was the same, 5yo dd wanted a robot dog thing that also had dreadful reviews and was hideously expensive. Again, hugely disappointing.

I guess it's weighing up whether the thrill of getting what they want will outweigh the crushing disappointment of the item being shit!

The coward's way out is to get a grandparent or other relative to buy it and you get her something decent. Grin

KrispyKale · 21/10/2021 09:59

I thought it looked like it could be used for storing some dolls later.

Mamette · 21/10/2021 10:04

There is something really special about a child sharing their one special thing which would make them happy, waiting excitedly for Christmas, and then getting that one thing. We can't always do that for them, obviously, but when we can, it's really special.

Exactly!

DameMaureen · 21/10/2021 10:04

I can see her playing a lot with this at home travelling from room to room - buy it 😁

TataMamma · 21/10/2021 10:06

Christmas 1988. Worst day of my life. Will forever stay with me. Spent most of day in tears. Father Christmas forgot to bring me a My Little Pony Nursery, and so my parents bought one for me a few days later. Couldn't understand how Father Christmas could forget something so important.
(PS - Can you get it second hand off gumtree or ebay maybe?).

AwkwardPaws27 · 21/10/2021 10:06

@urbanbuddha

Dunelm has this which has a 10 year warranty, although I can't imagine she'd be using it as a teenager. You could some buy some bits. But your DD might be seeing something I can't.
I am 32 and I'd use it Grin
QueeniesCroft · 21/10/2021 10:06

I might have just bought a vintage Mr Frosty on eBay. Maybe you should do the same and you can both have what you want!

stupiduser · 21/10/2021 10:06

You wanted a mr Frosty and have never forgotten it. Me too, and an a la carte kitchen. My kids have had kitchens and I bought myself a slushy machine! Buy her the suitcase

Nanny0gg · 21/10/2021 10:07

@dancinfeet

I would get her a small real suitcase in pink instead of the plastic one, and get some lovely accessories to go in it that are along the same lines but better quality than the ones in that one.
Me too.

Hate to be sanctimonious about this, but perhaps if less tat was bought, less tat would be produced.

Cornettoninja · 21/10/2021 10:07

I did the same! Grin I bought it for dd (then 5) and my god what a let down. It’s so much work for a couple of ice shavings and no flavours included. Utterly crap. I am however eyeing up one of those cups you freeze and make slushies in.

@Florencenotflo my dd also coverted that suitcase but I didn’t get it, the price attached was just too much for the tat that it is. Plus it looks quite big… (I haven’t rtft so don’t know if you’ve bought it). I’m not against Disney crap in general but that really does look rubbish.

BluebellsGreenbells · 21/10/2021 10:09

I’m 40 and I still want a mr frosty. I would get her it.

I’m 52 and still feel the disappointment

On a similar vein - try the ice cone maker!

stupiduser · 21/10/2021 10:10

@Cornettoninja don't buy the cups you freeze. They don't work. Buy a proper slushy machine. They are often on groupon or similar

bridepanic · 21/10/2021 10:11

All I can think is how obsessed with this I would have been as a 5 year old!

DigitalGhost · 21/10/2021 10:12

@Elllicam

I’m 40 and I still want a mr frosty. I would get her it.
You can still buy him! ...I have one 🤣
Blackmagicqueen · 21/10/2021 10:13

If you don't wanr to gwt the other one have you seen this instead op? Abit cheaper and similar thing but your dd could use the purse. Maybe show her to see?

Dd wants a (in my opinion) rubbish present for Christmas.
onelittlefrog · 21/10/2021 10:14

It's really hard as an adult to see things the way your child does.

If she is in love with it and keeps talking about it every time you go in the toy shop then I'd just get it.

Doesn't really matter if it's plastic tat to us. It will make her happy.

She probably can't understand why you would want whatever expensive/ unnecessary grown up purchases you make either :)

Blackmagicqueen · 21/10/2021 10:14
