Dd wants a (in my opinion) rubbish present for Christmas.

Dd is only 5 and already doing her Christmas list. She asks for the (attached) present every time we go into the toy shop and has even asked to buy it from her own money.

I am usually quite happy for let her spend her money on things she chooses, but I think this is really rubbish! And I know it will be top of her list again this year. Our budget this year for Dd is around £100 on presents for Christmas so to spend £40 of that on one present seems daft. The reviews of it are terrible, the case is pretty flimsy (not really usable as a suitcase) and the contents are mainly paper.

But at the end of the day, she's 5, it will make her happy, do I just suck it up?

(Plus, I can now see why my parents never bought me a Mr Frosty for Christmas when I was a child, although I'm still salty about it 😂)

I felt the same about the Barbie Campervan last year, however it has been played with almost every day since and the joy on her face on Christmas day was 100% worth it.

She wants it, find it on a black Friday deal so the money doesn't sting as much and buy it. It may be plastic tat but its what she wants, enough to spend her own money on.

I'd buy a decent suitcase that looks similar, and some Disney Princess stickers to decorate it. How aware is she of what it actually looks like and what's inside? Could you buy better quality equivalents and pass them off?

Alternatively, trawl Marketplace, Gumtree and EBay to see if you can get one second hand.

50ShadesOfCatholic · 21/10/2021 09:30

Aw I think I'd buy it. I remember Christmas from as young as 3 and the sheer joy I felt at getting my precious baby doll in a bassinet.

Get her what she wants. I'd understand if it cost hundreds, but it's within budget so don't give her a disappointing Christmas morning

Gonnagetgoing · 21/10/2021 09:32

Just buy it for her.

Mamette · 21/10/2021 09:32

I would buy it for her, no question.

Actually I would have bought it after about the second or third time she mentioned it, and it would be hidden in the back of the wardrobe now with a big ✔️beside DDs name on the Christmas present list.

Limit plastic elsewhere, this is her 5 year old heart’s desire.

Florencenotflo · 21/10/2021 09:33

Do things like this go in Black Friday sales? I though Black Friday was all tech and electricals?

Not Christmas but years ago as a 5 year old I got a Baby Alive for my birthday and I was so happy (it eats and shits wow!) Smile

MenaiMna · 21/10/2021 09:34

If it were me I'd think - it's crap but it's her dream crap - and my DD is still holding onto rubbish from that age because it meant "SO MUCH!!". There's sure to be a voucher code somewhere that will bring the price down. Meanwhile tell her no everytime she asks and surprise the heck out of her on Xmas morn.

JellyTotCat · 21/10/2021 09:35

Don't get her a disappointing home made version.

Itsbeen84yearss · 21/10/2021 09:36

Can you find one on eBay or marketplace and stick a ribbon on it? I’ve just had a look on fb market place and saw four ranging from £5-£15

hardyloveit · 21/10/2021 09:36

The last couple of years my dd same age as yours has asked for random things for her birthday - more younger than her age but I always got them as it was the only thing she wanted and I didn't want her to remember what she didn't get as such. I'd just buy it for Christmas. She will be SO excited on the day

Iwonder08 · 21/10/2021 09:37

Of course you should get it. It is for her not for you you don't have to like it

BuckEmOrf · 21/10/2021 09:37

Buy it and spend the change on a Mr Frosty for yourself!

QueeniesCroft · 21/10/2021 09:37

There is something really special about a child sharing their one special thing which would make them happy, waiting excitedly for Christmas, and then getting that one thing. We can't always do that for them, obviously, but when we can, it's really special.

My mother had the idea that getting what I wanted was morally wrong. Apparently I was very rude to express the wish for something even though she had always asked me, and I had to be punished for that. (This rule only applied to me, not my sisters and certainly not to her!). I also longer for a Mr Frosty but I was told I should chop up ice cubes instead!

I know there are several stages in between those two situations, but if I could give my kid that one thing they wanted, and that thing was not guns or knives, then I would.

NellieBertram · 21/10/2021 09:37

Yes, it's shit - but it's less than half your budget! Buy it!

Don't buy something similar but not quite right that you deem better - that would be even more disappointing than not getting it at all.

My kids have wanted many shit presents over the years - fingerlings and hatchimals that barely get looked at after New Year - but at 5 there is no greater Christmas joy than Santa bringing exactly what you always wanted.

NotMeNoNo · 21/10/2021 09:37

We did actually have a Barbie travel case for some years. It had loads of use packing toys for holidays or trips to grandmas. I know it’s just tat but at least it can be used for different things.

Peanutsandchilli · 21/10/2021 09:37

My daughter is 4 and wanted a Happy Napper for her birthday. I wasn't prepared to spend £50 on it. She's forgotten about it by now. I really wouldn't spend that much on tat.

Blackmagicqueen · 21/10/2021 09:37

I would get her it as know the feeling as a xhild when you get something you excitedly have wanted for ages...no feelings like it and you remember that as an adult op.

Blackmagicqueen · 21/10/2021 09:37

MadeForThis · 21/10/2021 09:37

My friend got one a couple of months ago in a charity shop. The kids all play with it every time we visit. It's the first toy they run to!! They love filling it up and wheeling it around. For £5 it was a bargain!!

Could you see what her reaction is to an alternative Disney princess rolling bag like this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/Disney-Princess-DSP4-8053-Trolley-Multi-Colour/dp/B011JI423C/ref=sr11_14?dchild=1&keywords=Disney+princess&qid=1634805403&s=luggage&sr=1-14

If she still wants the plastic tat one I'd buy it but if it's just a bag on wheels with princesses on that she wants then there are alternatives

coodawoodashooda · 21/10/2021 09:39

@Cantstopthewaves

Ps. I had Mr Frosty. He was fabulous. SorryGrin
Me too!
orangeautumnleaves · 21/10/2021 09:39

I still remember my aunt buying me a purple and green tartan pinafore with a frilly blouse when we were meant to be in the department store to get my scaletrics set! 40 years later and not forgotten!!
