Undercooked chicken

meltinginthisheat · 20/10/2021 19:52

DH cooked dinner tonight. I merrily took a bite of my Birdseye chicken burger to find it wasn't properly cooked. It wasn't completely raw, but still looked a bit pink. I spat it out when I realised so I don't think swallowed any. Will I definitely get ill from this? I have an important meeting tomorrow so I'm panicking I'm going to have d&v!

@dementedpixie

I wasn't joking about the probe thing btw. We use one to double check meat temperatures
Yes that is a good idea. Would avoid future mishaps!

@statetrooperstacey

I think the main reason to fear undercooked chicken is salmonella etc, this wouldn’t be present in such a processed food I don’t imagine (read the list of ingredients on the back it’s full of preservatives etc) you won’t get food poisoning or even the shits from a half cooked chicken burger. If the burger had been half cooked then kept warm for hours it might be a problem but if hadn’t do don’t worry. Good luck for your interview, if the worry is all consuming take an Imodium in the morning.
An Imodium in the morning (if necessary) is a good idea! Thank you for the useful advice Smile

Nah, you'll be fine. I ate part of an undercooked homemade chicken burger once (not cooked by me), I started at the thin end of the (whole) breast and only noticed when I got up to the thicker end. Must've swallowed quite a bit of raw chicken I would have thought Blush

EarringsandLipstick · 21/10/2021 19:28

I asked to see if anyone else had done similar and what happened

You actually asked:

Will I definitely get ill from this?
You panicked about D&V because you'd an important meeting.

You had one bite that you spat out. How would you think that would harm you?🤷🏻‍♀️

You can keep your Hmm you asked a question, you got reassurance. It was an oner-reaction, of course it was!

Hope your meeting went well anyway.

Ok - I accept that in your opinion I overreacted. Thanks for taking time out of your day to have a little dig at someone who was worried ahead of an important meeting, simply to point out your opinion (which I hadn't asked for).

Thank you to everyone else for the kind and helpful replies - I was fine and the meeting went as well as it couldSmile

So you were over-reacting then.

Nope. I happened to be fine after being worried Smile

@JetRocket

I had this the other day OP, made one for 19 mo DS, cooked it exactly as instructed (2 minutes longer than required) and it looked under cooked in my opinion so I chucked it out.

I’m super careful about cooking food for my little ones as I’m a raging emetophobe. It was over cooked yet looked a bit raw. Oven was fully preheated too so not that.

Why chuck it out? You could have just shoved it back the oven or whatever and cooked for a bit longer.
BeStillNowColin · 22/10/2021 13:28

Dh has always been paranoid worried about undercooked food and so he came to the relationship with a food thermometer. It is second nature now to just prod a digital thermometer into meat, chicken or fish coming out of the oven.

Ds1 has just gone to uni and requested one as it is a new oven to him and he wants to make sure he cooks things well.

There is definitely a couple of things like an enchilada dish and a breaded chicken burger thing that need longer than the instructions say.

I'm lost as to why a few people seem to be at pains to say they think I've overreacted.

I asked a question about whether it would make me unwell, because I was worried about an important meeting the next day. I didn't ask for a critique on whether my reaction was normal. The meeting wasn't an interview but was about treatment following a life long diagnosis for my 3 year old - so of course I was worried.

I didn't share that level of detail in my first post because it wasn't relevant to my question, but I'm sharing it now because hopefully it will encourage those who have enjoyed picking at me to have a second thought before nit picking strangers online.

Seriously, calm down. It was a one line, fairly mild opinion. You really don't need to get so exercised about it.

I didn't pick on you, just made an observation.

I am calm....

I don't think your observation was intended to be helpful. But that's just my opinion.

Well, no. She could hardly tell the outcome in advance, could she?

Everyone's angry today on mumsnet

Peanutmnm · 22/10/2021 14:23

Sure I doubt there's any chicken in a Birdseye chicken burger anywaySmile

But OP asked "will I definitely get ill?" and said "I'm panicking I'm going to have d&v".

Neither of those things happened, and were never likely to given that she hadn't actually eaten the chicken in the first place.

Ah but I didn't know they weren't likely to happen, which is why I asked the question. Perhaps overreacting should be reframed I think you're a plonker for not knowing that wouldn't make you sick Smile

I think calling you a 'plonker' would be much worse than saying you were over-reacting (I know you're joking about the comment!)

You were over-reacting. Whether you think it's helpful of me to say that or not, maybe you'll be able to appraise risk a little better the next time? Like if you don't eat any of the food, you can't get sick.

I'm glad the meeting went well, I can imagine how important it was to be able to attend & be well for it.

@EarringsandLipstick l think we are just going to have to agree to disagree on this one Wink
