Make up for 11 year old

Generalpost · 19/10/2021 19:24

My 11 year old is asking for make up for Xmas. I don't wear make up. so dont know where to start. I want her to have something very basic not to noticeable and won't effect her skin.

I think it's too young but I'm sure that there will be lots of people coming on to tell me how wrong I am

toolazytothinkofausername · 19/10/2021 19:29

Nail Varnishes, lip gloss, eye shadow pallet, blush pallet, and a few brushes.

At 11yo I wouldn't buy foundation or concealer.

bonfireheart · 19/10/2021 19:29

A bit of clear lip gloss and nail varnish?

Nail varnishes and lip gloss is all I’d give an 11 year old.

gogohm · 19/10/2021 19:34

Nail varnish, lip gloss, eye shadow perhaps - Superdrug is a good place to look

I think it is as well I'm not 100% I will do it. But I thought there may be something very basic that won't really notice much.

Skincare, handcream, a set of light coloured lip glosses, nail file , light coloured nail polish and remover. Nice bag to put it in.

Eyeshadow from Revolution

MrsWidgerysLodger · 19/10/2021 21:06

Look at the Revolution range from Superdrug. Decent quality, good range of stuff including some eye pallets with a wide range of colours and it's brilliant quality for the money. Plus it doesn't look like "kids" makeup so if she wants some stuff to mess about with but still wants to feel grown up it should fit the bill.

RoyKentsHairyBack · 19/10/2021 21:34

So I am a total failure here as I swore dd wouldn't wear make up at that age. However she fell in love with it at a friends house when she was 10, spends her YouTube time looking at make up tutorials and wants to be a MAU when she grows up.

We got her a 'kit' last Christmas (she was just 11). Got an eye pallet from Superdrug - Revolution one. A pallet of lip glosses from tk maxx - worth looking in there actually as there are some good bargains at this time of year plus a bundle of rimmel nail varnish which I got on Black Friday from Amazon. Also a set of brushes from tk maxx so she can learn to apply properly and a nice proper bag from Amazon.

She is not allowed foundation or concealer or mascara. However she did buy herself a black eyeliner when she was out with her mates but she uses that to practise at home only. She 'borrowed' some blusher from me but that's been shelved as daddy asked her why she was going out looking like Aunt Sally then showed her clips of Worzel Gummidge.

I know this isn't what you asked but I make my peace with the make up by being honest with her when she looks silly, trying to give her advice when she goes over the top and saying a flat no when it looks inappropriate. She gets so much pleasure from trying it and it's not a peer pressure thing or an attempt to look older.

I'd say about 50% of her mates wear it. The other 50% (including Dd2) don't touch it.

Sorry - bit long!

One of those hideous make-up kits from Argos will surely put her off or, if not, provide many hilarious pictures...

Before I had my daughter, I thought it was the devil’s own work, worn only because the child thought they weren’t “good enough” without. I don’t wear any myself.

Well… it’s probably top of my, “I would never…” but now I do list 🤣

I have a Y8 who has been crazy about make up for several years. Loves it, and quickly got good with it and is now fantastic with it.

For her, it’s art. It’s not peer pressure - half her friends don’t even like it, some gently take the piss out of her obsession. She happily goes out without it too. She’ll spend a morning following tutorials, working on looks… then strip it all off and head out to play in the park.

When she started secondary and had Art lessons, they did colour theory and the teacher commented how much she already knew - from make up! So it’s even been educational 😉

She doesn’t wear it because she’s unhappy with any part of her. She wears it because it’s fun and artistic (she loves to draw and paint too)

I find it interesting that a lot of suggestions are for glosses, light colours, neutral colours.

I say go big! Revolution is great, and if you wait for sales, some Morphe palettes are fabulous! For shades and quality - they do last a long time. I’d go for eyeshadow and coloured and black eyeliner because they’re the most fun and creative.

Watch Glow Up together!

We have also had some really nice chats about who wears make up, and why, and why I would have concerns about her self esteem, and who she was doing it for. And skincare too - she would never not clean it off thoroughly! And though her room is a teen floordrobe you can bet her brushes are cleaned and organised 😆

I am blown away by her skill and artistry, but most I just love to see the joy and fun that she has with it. I say embrace it and go big!

emsyj37 · 19/10/2021 23:11

I love makeup and think it's totally harmless, and perfectly fine for an 11yo as long as they clean it off properly afterwards. I have bought my 11yo DD quite a lot of stuff from Revolution, it's great. She also loves perfume, especially the Ariana Grande ones (Cloud is lovely).

ikeepseeingit · 19/10/2021 23:12

I agree with the poster saying go big! They don’t need anything to cover up but colourful eyeshadows and lipgloss to play about with would be loads of fun as a kid. I remember being that age and putting green eyeshadow everywhere then heading out looking hilarious. I didn’t care 🤣 let her explore the creative side and give her the colours to play with! Makeup revolution in Superdrug is a great suggestion. Some eyeshadow and some brushes and a the collection brand clear mascara will be enough for her to start off with Grin

Emmelina · 19/10/2021 23:21

I know it’s a gift, but can you take her in person to get it? Different shades of different colours suit different skintones. I agree with the above about no foundation, but she may appreciate a concealer for the odd teenage spot that may start sneaking in soon if they haven’t already. And it might be a fun trip to test things out on the back of your hand :) Superdrug and boots would be my first port of call.

bonfireheart · 19/10/2021 23:36

Agree with @Cocomarine. Dd13 loves to practice makeup in her spare time, she loves art, and finds it relaxing. She rarely wears it out. And it is a skill. Next she wants to learn how to do special effects make up :) she would recommend Huda, Revolution and Morphe.

Cocomarine · 20/10/2021 00:01

@bonfireheart it really is about wanting to look dramatic or interesting or stylish, not pretty or perfect, isn’t it?

My daughter has started walking into the room with “nose bleeds” or “bruises” to see if I’ll fall for it… she really got me with the nose bleed! It was ace.

I have a 10 year old daughter who also has a love for watching make up tutorials on you tube and wanting to experiment and see if she can copy.

We bought makeup for her birthday with the understanding that she can use it freely at home messing around and doing her face. I bought a small amount of branded make up and some colourful James Charles palettes when on sale (these are really colourful/almost face paint colourful) to prevent any unnecessary break outs on her skin. Also sat down together to go through how to thoroughly wash it off her face (or with my help).

Going out she is allowed to wear some clear mascara (makes no difference but she enjoys putting it on) and some lip gloss (mostly clear too) and nail varnish.

She is fully on board with this and just enjoys trying it out at home. I will be keeping this rule for the next few years at the very least and think it's the best balance for us to allow her to experiment but not get hooked on "needing makeup".

This might be something to consider if you are also hesitant. Allows her to explore without bringing it fully into her day to day life.

FearlessSwiftie · 20/10/2021 05:51

@bonfireheart

A bit of clear lip gloss and nail varnish?
Absolutely this, I think this would be more than enough and if she wants some crazy stuff to try just for having a good laugh there are tons of makeup photo editors like Photodiva or Picsart that allow you to apply it to the photo and have fun experimenting with it. At 11 she doesn't need a bag full of makeup products.
GlamorousHeifer · 20/10/2021 06:11

My 11 year old has had makeup since she was about 9 (including foundation). She has no confidence issues but she loves following make up tutorials on YouTube (or wherever it is they watch them these days!). She will happily spend a morning perfecting a 'look' then take it all off and go horse riding or out with her friends.
I can't help but think if I asked for makeup for Christmas and I got a bit of clear lip gloss and some nail varnish I would be seriously disappointed.

Florence by Mills is designed for younger people. It's vegan, cruelty free, not got loads of nasties in.
They mostly do cleansers and skin care type things but some bits of makeup too.

RoyKentsHairyBack · 20/10/2021 07:11

@Cocomarine mine is perfecting her vampire bites for Halloween at the moment. She came in with an armful the other day.

Also love Glow Up here too

I've tried the Florence by Mills range and did not like it. The quality was horrible.
