Products for making ponytails easier?

Anycrispsleft · 19/10/2021 08:50

I wondered if anyone has come across any snazzy products that make it easier to do a ponytail? Hair bobbles that are easier to fasten or anything like that? I'm going back to work soon and DH will be doing mornings with the kids... they both have long hair and it needs tied back for sports class. He struggles to make a neat ponytail. I mean, I guess he will get better with practice, but in the meantime, the kids have got to go school with ponytails all over to the one side like Gourock, as my granny would have said Grin

Anyone? I thought at least I'd get someone telling me off for not letting him learn it himself just like we all had to Grin

There’s a hack for tying hair up with a hoover but I wouldn’t advise it! 😂

I thought of the hoover one too Grin

He needs to practice between now and then. You don’t need a vagina to do a ponytail

The snag free twisty hair bands “invisibobbles” are less likely to pull and hurt. But ultimately it’s going to be practice. How old are your DCs?

Scissors ✂️ Grin

Seeline · 19/10/2021 12:11

I think they are easier to do neatly if they are kept lower on the head, but apart from that he just needs to practice if the kids are too young to be able to do their own.

Or try bunches, or plaits.

CausingChaos2 · 19/10/2021 12:14

My childhood best friend taught me to lie on a bed and dangle my head over the end - it’s still the technique I have to use to make a neat ponytail now Blush

Gravity is working in your favour, brush through then sweep back into a bobble.

yefferson · 19/10/2021 12:17

Detangling spray and a tangle teezer or similar if knots are the issue, and agree that invisibobble are better than regular bobbles.

Oh shit, I think I’m doing it wrong then!

Oh my god, this. Ffs. He needs to practice. Ponytails are not a skill than only females are born with.

Does he need lessons in how to put their coats on, or pack their lunches?

octopusrus · 19/10/2021 12:20

My daughter has really tangly long hair and the best thing I've bought is one of the large, slightly curved bristle brushes from EBay for about £4. They are brilliant.
Also if it's long enough, make sure it's always brushed and plaited before bed which makes the morning a million times easier.
We personally don't get on well with the invisibobbles as they seem get tangled for us.

SheWoreYellow · 19/10/2021 12:20

Did you need someone to ask people on the internet how to do it?

No. If he’s sending them out with a wonky ponytail it’s because he doesn’t give a shit.

CodeMode · 19/10/2021 12:22

It’s really not difficult to do a basic ponytail with a bit of practice. My daughter and nephew could do it themselves pretty well from about age 8, are you really saying he’s incapable of doing something that a child can do?

Yep, he just needs to practice and be bothered to try and do it well. If the girls won't sit still to let him do you have long enough hair that he can practice on you?

Seriously, I can't think of a simpler up do than a pony.

sashh · 19/10/2021 12:54

At night put the hair into a pony tail or pigtails and then plait it. Send to bed with the plaits. So you have an elastic at the top and then another at the end.

This can be done wet.

In the morning undo the plait and brush the pony tail / pig tails. They might need tightening up a bit but should be OK.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 19/10/2021 12:57

Get the child to sit cross legged on the floor in front of the sofa. They need to look straight ahead (the TV can help with this if they are very little).

He sits on the sofa with them between his feet.

Brush the hair and gather into a bunch. Get it as central as possible by eye and put the bobble round. Then adjust it by splitting the hair in two and pulling the halves apart to tighten it, you can move it slightly to the side by pulling one side more than the other.

If it is a low ponytail, line it up by putting a finger on their neck and feeling for bone, line the ponytail up with the vertebrae, for a higher ponytail get the child to put their finger on their nose and tip their head back then line up with the nose.

He needs to do it everyday morning and night for practice. It isn't hard. Alternatively teach one or both kids to do it.

Thatsplentyjack · 19/10/2021 12:58

Yeah here's the hack, a brush, a bobble and fucking practice.

noscoobydoodle · 19/10/2021 13:01

If the bobble is the problem try Sinchies or banana clips.

yellowgingham · 19/10/2021 13:04

To be fair to the OP's DH, I also had to show my (short-haired) MIL how to do a ponytail in DD's hair and she's still rubbish at it

I think it's less about having a vagina and more that women are more likely to have had long hair themselves so have learned how to do it that way.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 19/10/2021 13:07

Remind him many famous hairdressers are men ! He'll get the hang of it

Marcipex · 19/10/2021 13:14

Practice is key.
And of course de-tangle first.
Older children can practice doing their own too.
If younger children can’t or won’t cooperate, then ✂️

Absolutely this. Nowhere has OP suggested her DH isn’t willing to learn.

Everyone could plaster a wall perfectly with enough practice but it’s going to take time to get there.

Anycrispsleft · 19/10/2021 14:53

I couldn't do it very well when the kids were little either. But nobody cared because they were little, and by the time they had to wear it up, I was a dab hand. Now DH has to get with the program in a couple of weeks. I mean I'm sure he'll manage, but if there was a product that made it easier that would be great.
