Something weird happened to me in middle of the night :(

I woke up at 3am and my heart started racing madly. It was like I had just ran a sprint. I then had a weird feeling and then it happened again about 10 mins later and then a short one after that. Then I had a burning sensation, like heartburn to the left.

I was really, really scared. At first I thought OMG I am having a panic attack, but I am not worried about anything or I wasn't panicking about anything at the time aside from the racing heart.

I couldn't get back to sleep and now I am really worried about what this was.

OP glad to hear you've got a clean bill of health at least as far as your heart is concerned.

Alcohol does this to me so I've all but quit entirely, will just limit it to celebrations and occasions. If I drink even small amounts two nights in a row the effect on my mood is really noticeable so it's for the best. It's also a se of perimenopause as pp have said.

I keep antihistamines by my bedside (for allergies) and occasionally take a half a tablet if I can't sleep. I think some of the effect is psychological tbh. I have the Deep Sleep spray too, which I'm agnostic about but it seems to work for a lot of people.

What does magnesium do before you go to bed?

I bought ear buds have Netflix, prime and Disney on my phone. It's been a game changer. Listen to some old series I know well and I drop back off to sleep

Magnesium makes the body ‘calm down’ it helps to down regulate the heart beat and other nervous impulses and taking it before bed helps to stop aching legs and heart arrthymias while you sleep/try to sleep.

Most people are deficient as its difficult to get enough of it in modern diets.

If you take Vit D, thats more of a morning wake you up kind of supplement (like the sun rising) so should be taken at breakfast.

Speak to your gp. Apparently women put things down to funny turns and they can actually be little heart attacks. We don’t usually have the same symptoms as men do

I think I had something very similar to you last night @AddictedToLuv
I woke about 2.30am with a strange burning feeling in my back left shoulder blade which then felt like it was moving forward to my rib cage. I wouldn't say it was painful, just the ache you get when you sit at a strange angle for a while without realising. I then thought is this the start of a heart attack, and trying to work out when you know it is really one, or if it was 'just' a panic attack?
I then felt like I was about to pass out, all cold and clammy and shaking like crazy. I sat up and tried to play solitaire for a while (this has helped me with anxiety in the past) but I just felt worse. My jaw started tightening up like I was clenching it, but I get this with anxiety. My stomach then felt really upset so I went to the loo. I then sat in the bathroom doing deep breathing, which started to calm down the shaking, but then I started to get cold, so I went back to bed but sat upright and just did deep breathing until I felt calm again and the shaking had stopped. When I laid down it felt like the shaking was starting again a few more times, but a bit more deep breathing and I must have drifted off to sleep.
I feel a bit odd this morning though, not just from the lack of sleep. The only thing different about my day yesterday was having an iron infusion. I can't see anything that says it could cause this, and I didn't have this before when I had one.
Anyway, I hope it doesn't happen again as it was quite scary, even though I oddly felt calm throughout.
I hope it doesn't happen again to you op.

me4real · 26/10/2021 17:04

Sounds like anxiety really OP- try and think if anything is worrying you.

I assume the doctors gave you the all clear physically?

Bluebellfae · 12/01/2022 17:28

@TattyDevine

Did you have a Pfizer in the last 3 weeks? This happened to my friend, not being funny as I'm a big fan of the vax programme
This is happening to me after my pfizer booster been waking up in the night heart racing and adrenaline feeling, seen doctor had ECG and bloods today. Its likely hormonal though but, ive never had the heart racing before :( :( im 44 and def In peri. I found this thread by searching for related issue I'm still feeling really scared about it
Goldenbear · 12/01/2022 17:41

I'm almost in the same position as Bluebellefae, I'm 43 had my Pfizer booster on the 17th December and didn't feel any pain in the arm or anything but yesterday had pain in the area I had been injected and having heart racing, feeling just weird but it is happening to me in the day so walked up hill for school run, I do this all the time so am relatively fit but had one of these funny turns yesterday. Had something similar New years eve. Told my brother who I was visiting as thought it was some kind of panic attack but then it went away. I have just been to the supermarket a nd had the feeling again when I got back in the car- adrenaline rush but then subsides is good way to describe it. I have been looking on Mumsnet as worried about it as well.

Hoggler · 12/01/2022 17:45

Just before Christmas I had to contact my GP after a few episodes very like this and have subsequently had a 24hour ECG. This was within a week of my Pfizer booster too 😕

Goldenbear · 12/01/2022 17:46

Can I ask what the outcome of ECG was or don't you know yet?

Hoggler · 12/01/2022 17:51

Apparently I'll be getting the results next week.

Goldenbear · 12/01/2022 17:52

I might call the GP tomorrow then as I thought it was my imagination but it is random and quite scary.

MsMeNz · 12/01/2022 18:09

Sounds like an SVT I have had a couple very randomly in my life. Google that and see if that sounds right?

Goldenbear · 12/01/2022 22:27

Thanks, will do.

JanuaryBluehoo · 12/01/2022 22:40

I had similar last year over Xmas time and I had heart tests and wore something.
Then it went and again I feel my heart rocking occasionally.

I wonder if it's something to do with the Vegas vein or nerve mentioned before or... The oestrogen...

Interesting that a few of you have posted after mine with the same issues 🤔 😕

My ECG and blood tests have come back normal. Ive not had it since it happened over 2 nights but could be hormonal no idea. I dont like it at all and scared of it happening again. Distracting is the key if waking up worrying or feeling it..

I've had vagus nerve episodes in the past too. Could be linked xx
thereisonlyoneofme · 20/01/2022 14:37

I have paroxysmal atrial fibrillation which causes the on and off racing, and a weird feeling on my chest, but not a burning
