Something weird happened to me in middle of the night :(

I woke up at 3am and my heart started racing madly. It was like I had just ran a sprint. I then had a weird feeling and then it happened again about 10 mins later and then a short one after that. Then I had a burning sensation, like heartburn to the left.

I was really, really scared. At first I thought OMG I am having a panic attack, but I am not worried about anything or I wasn't panicking about anything at the time aside from the racing heart.

I couldn't get back to sleep and now I am really worried about what this was.

The fact you still have shoulder pain could be significant.
Do get an ECG today if you can.

Gothichouse40 · 19/10/2021 09:35

It sounds like acid reflux. However, best get it checked out by the doctor.

YumLemonCheesecake · 19/10/2021 09:36

GP will almost definitely send you to a&e i'd get ahead of the game and go now x

Tachycardia is one of the symptons of menopause/perimenopause. What you ate probably didn't help. Definitely mention it to your GP though.

FreeBritnee · 19/10/2021 09:50

I think you’re wise to get it checked out. I get a lot of anxiety in my sleep and it’s not unusual for me to have panic attacks in my sleep where my gear is racing. If it is unusual for you though then it’s worth seeing a doctor.

Biscuitsneeded · 19/10/2021 09:50

Too much sugar does this to me. I can literally feel my heart racing. I have been on a diet for 6 weeks and therefore barely having any sugar and I haven't experienced this once. Just try to be more moderate withe the alcohol and sugar and it'll probably resolve itself.

Same. Sugar and caffeine will absolutely cause this. I eat very low carb, no sugar and am much, much better than I was.

After I had covid I would get bad heart palpitations and a racing heart, I couldn’t do any exercise as I seriously thought my heart was going to explode. I also got shortness of breath. I think this is what they call long covid but they hadn’t discovered that was a thing when I had it.

I’d definitely make an appointment to see your gp just to get things checked out.

FindingMeno · 19/10/2021 09:58

You need to get this checked out, hopefully just to put your mind at rest.

Thepennysjustdropped · 19/10/2021 10:09

It could possibly be down to the meal you had. So please don't panic - but do get it checked out asap, because heart attack symptoms for women can be different than for men, and aren't as widely publicised.

YouJustFoldItIn · 19/10/2021 10:12

Absolutely DO get it checked in case it was heart related, but bear in mind this sort of thing is very common in menopausal women.

Panic attack symptoms, (even if you are not consciously aware of anxiety or panicking over anything specific)

A sudden intolerance to some foods and especially alcohol that gives you heartburn and acid reflux

An intolerance to alcohol that severely disprupts your sleep patterns and causes your heart to race abnormally.

Esophogeal spasms which can really be scary and uncomfortable and feel a lot like you imagine a heart attack would.

And a hundred other hormone related things that could cause you mind and heart to race in the way you describe.

Get to your GP for an ECG referral then discuss HRT. Good luck.

Grimbelina · 19/10/2021 10:23

I have had this after Astrazeneca (both times) and now have a referral to a cardiologist (expecting a POTS diagnosis).

TheMoreThisReachesTheMainstrea · 19/10/2021 10:27

full on red and white wine.

Then this sounds like Hangxiety, blood sugar drops when the sugar loaded drinks wears off and you wake up heart racing and full on anxiety for what seems no reason

Supersimkin2 · 19/10/2021 10:38

Heartburn, it can be surprisingly awful.

Zinfandelli · 19/10/2021 10:42

I have had similar symptoms on and off for years (started in my mid-twenties). I've been thoroughly checked out by my GP and at hospital and eventually diagnosed with nocturnal panic attacks. They are more frequent when I'm generally feeling stressed and I've had CBT which helps a bit. But mostly they come out of the blue.

You're definitely doing the right thing contacting your doctor, as PPs have said they may well send you to A&E to have your heart looked at. With chest pains and palpitations it's really important to rule out more serious issues first.

FatCatThinCat · 19/10/2021 10:48

It could be lots of things. I had this just one time, woke up with a racing heart and felt like I was having a panic attack. I was later diagnosed with severe sleep apnea and I was having a panic attack about being suffocated in my sleep.

BIWI · 19/10/2021 10:51

@doubleshotcappuccino

Menopause or low carb .. either way very normal but very scary x
It can't possibly be low carb given what the OP has said she's been eating!
Pyewackect · 19/10/2021 11:14

Go and see your GP.

IntermittentParps · 19/10/2021 11:17

I hope the OP's OK.

BlameItOnTheBlackStar · 19/10/2021 11:25

My Grandad died at 52 during the night due to what he thought was heartburn.

Please do get checked OP, I'm sure you're fine but definitely do get advice.

Kitkat151 · 19/10/2021 11:54

I often have episodes which you describe....I am 56 and developed an ectopic heartbeat around 18 months ago ( well that’s when it was diagnosed....could likely have had it longer).... I have had 24 hour trace ecg and also an echo cardio gram.... I have been reassured that it’s not harmful .... my heart beat can go from 70 to 120 for absolutely no reason...even when resting....it used to worry me a lot... but I’m used to it now.....some days I’m not aware of it at all...other days I have several episodes.... I think lots of people live with ectopic heart beats....however, definately get yourself checked out ASAP .... I went to AandE first time it happened to me as it was over a bank holiday and it was very frightening....they set the ball rolling for investigations...take good care

UltimateBugKilla · 19/10/2021 12:11

My aunt had similar, it was SVT.

Please get your heart health checked.

AddictedToLuv · 19/10/2021 12:20

Thanks for all your messages of support.
I am in A&E and have had an ECG and blood pressure taken. Just waiting for chat with doctor apparently.

Oh good. I’m sure it’s probably nothing major but it’s really good to get it checked on the off chance.

cricketmum84 · 19/10/2021 12:28

Ah glad you have been seen.

Hope all is ok x
