Food for D of E expedition. Fussy eater please help

I have a fussy eater ds15 and he can't seem to come up with meals for his weekend camping expedition. Won't eat anything with a wet sauce ie; chilli, spaghetti Bol etc. Will eat plain pasta, bread (not brioche), tinned sardines at a push. He'll be bringing weetabix and fruit for breakfast but stuck for lunches. Will need non perishable foods.

He's always hungry even after huge meals at home. Any ideas please?

Wheres he going and whats he doing? What are the facilities (if any)? Does he have to carry it?

Bronze? Silver?

TenThousandSpoons · 17/10/2021 12:52

Sardine sandwich for lunch, plain pasta for dinner?

Silver, 2 nights three days, South Downs. I think it's a campsite but not sure tbh - he seems vague on the details.

First night is fine as he has a food flask.

Yes, they have to carry everything.

I was thinking sardines, pasta and raw carrots for dinner both nights. Not sure they'll be setting up the stove for lunches - I doubt it as they'll be on the move. He gets very hungry and tired if he doesn't eat a lot.

Does the certification require specific types of food or cooking methods to pass?

If not I'd let him have weetabix, fruit and tinned sardines for every meal if he'd be happy doing that. It's only a couple of days and won't do any long term harm to just have plenty of snack type foods that he enjoys and can carry.

dementedma · 17/10/2021 12:57

Protein bars for snacking and keeping energy up. Cup a soups?

overthethamesfromyou · 17/10/2021 12:57

They normally cook as a group?

WombatChocolate · 17/10/2021 12:59

Food flask sounds heavy. Anything requiring milk sounds heavy.
Every extra 100g makes a difference when you’re looking to limit weight to well under 15k and that weight already includes tent, stove, sleeping bags and 2kg of water.

Dried food that’s incredibly light is good. Sandwiches/brioche type things and sachets of food/sauce.

Dried meat like peppers I sticks can be good. Couscous in sachet

Key thing is v light food in bags or v light containers.

WombatChocolate · 17/10/2021 12:59

Yes, cook and a S group and submitting meal plans in advance is part of it.

tocas · 17/10/2021 13:01

He is 15, let him decide and pack and if not he goes hungry, it is part of the expedition that he prepares and he is old enough so just let him get on with it.

Turmerictolly · 17/10/2021 13:02

Thanks for all of the replies. Yes, they're cooking in small groups but the boys in his group are non fussy eaters so are mooting ideas like a veg chilli (packet mix/tinned veg etc) which ds won't eat.

We have a tiny pan that he can heat his stuff up on when they've finished. It's not ideal but it's either that or go hungry.

Something in a wrap. I remember buying lots of wraps for dd. They will need to probably agree as a group. Can you get him to try out some recipes at home over the coming weeks?

GoWalkabout · 17/10/2021 13:03

What about that sardine paste stuff you can put in sandwiches? Honestly sardines are nice but lots of people strongly dislike the smell and if its raining they'll be eating huddled close together so he might get some complaints.

SheWoreYellow · 17/10/2021 13:03

Tinned tuna/tuna and sweet corn sandwich filling and tinned ham might be useful?
I’d also keep cheese a while without refrigeration.

SheWoreYellow · 17/10/2021 13:04

Oh and frankfurters in jars.

Turmerictolly · 17/10/2021 13:05

... yes, I'm inclined to think he'll just have to go hungry and if he's hungry enough, he'll eat what's there!

Won't eat pepperami, cheese straws or anything like that.

Sigh...

Lunches:
Wraps/crackers with sardines/tuna/cheese spread?
Babybel
Flapjack
Cold (stuffed) pasta cooked the night before.

Dinners:
Stuffed pasta
Pasta
A dinner that you have cooked at home that he just needs to reheat by boiling it in the bag www.lakeland.co.uk/1405/Boil-a-Bags---50-Cooking-Freezer-and-Microwave-Food-Bags-

What does he suggest?

WaltzingBetty · 17/10/2021 13:06

Sachets of savoury rice are good
Super noodles
Biltong
Protein cereal bars
Miso soup

etulosba · 17/10/2021 13:06

I have a nephew like this. Meal times are always a trial. He will eat tortelloni and that would work for a D of E expedition. Light and easy to cook.

GoWalkabout · 17/10/2021 13:07

Ideas from dd, no idea if he'll like any obviously, but high energy things that keep well
Peanut butter sandwiches (or jam)
Filled tortellini
Flatbreads/wraps
Sausage rolls (the individual wrapped ones, or cheese / vegan versions like cheese and onion pasty)
Big flapjacks

Molehillfromamountain · 17/10/2021 13:07

For lunch, will he eat pittas or wraps? Pitta with tuna pouches, primula cheese tubes, pepperoni banana and honey. Plenty of fruit, flapjack type bars, homemade would last fine for silver.
For evening meals I assume he'll use mess tins and a stove. Would he eat noodles, or dolmio microwave pouches (with or without sauce, just add a little water to the mess tin and keep stirring.)
Snack on nuts and seeds.
Have his DofE provider given any ideas as to what he should take? It's usually a part of the syllabus.

barleywoken · 17/10/2021 13:08

Why are you the one sorting it out @Turmerictolly if he's old enough to go on the DofE then surely he can decide what he wants to eat!?
Let him decide, let him pack, let him work it out! That's the whole point surely Hmm

Molehillfromamountain · 17/10/2021 13:08

Sorry OP spent so long typing I've cross posted without about 3 times. Ignore any ideas you've discounted already Blush
