If you inherited £450k, what would you do with it?

Let's assume you don't have any kids to pass it on to, so we don't have a whole thread about putting it by for the kids, what would you do with an inherited £450k?

I'd buy a house around the £250k mark (currently renting), budget £20-30k for doing it up if required... and then I'm not actually sure what I'd do with the rest!

  • Buy a bungalow, three bedrooms - £200,000, maybe put some towards renovations.
  • Put some away for retirement.
  • Pay off any debts.

Retire! No question

InABetterPlaceNow · 16/10/2021 20:27

Watching with interest. As I'm probably about to get around 300k.

Just don't want to fritter it away.

Chanel05 · 16/10/2021 20:28

That'd pretty much just outright but me a three bed semi where I live 😬

InFiveMins · 16/10/2021 20:32

I would use £150k to pay off my mortgage. I'd save £200k. I'd blow the remaining £100k on a couple of nice holidays, gifts for friends and family, and I'd buy a nice car outright too.

MrsClatterbuck · 16/10/2021 21:18

A holiday home on Lanzarote and holidays to visit family abroad. Plus a new car. Our pensions are very adequate to live on so it would be nice to have a cushion for unexpected expenses and to change the car when we have to go electric. Maybe a couple of changes to the house. It's a new build but there are a few things I regret.

worriedatthemoment · 16/10/2021 21:21

Debts, house , car , holiday and would be gone

worriedatthemoment · 16/10/2021 21:22

When i say holiday, I mean dream holiday, holiday of a lifetime

myheartskippedabeat · 16/10/2021 22:05

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie

Retire early. No contest.
Exactly

The thought of working until I'm nearly 70 really isn't very appealing

When I started work at 18 the place I went to most people retired at 55!!

My state pension age is already gone from 65 up to 68

It's a depressing thought

Nearlytheretrees · 16/10/2021 22:11

Finally be able to buy a house

Catcrazy83 · 16/10/2021 22:39

Depends how old you are and how I h you usually earn. I’d look to finishing work as soon as possible

Sn0tnose · 16/10/2021 22:43

I’d spend £250k on two houses in South Wales, one to live in and one to rent out so I could take a job I didn’t hate. 100k to spend on doing house improvements, a new ish car and a really nice holiday and 100k in the bank.

B229 · 17/10/2021 00:16

Paying off debts and mortgage, which eats up a decent chunk, just save the rest or potentially go on a course.

Bloodybridget · 17/10/2021 04:49

Make our house as much near ideal as possible, but move ourselves and everything in it out during the process. Get rid of all the ugly/clapped out old furniture and buy exactly what we want when we move back in.

SarahBellam · 17/10/2021 04:58

Buy an apartment at the beach and go and live there.

Seafog · 17/10/2021 05:00

Build a house

HotSauceCommittee · 17/10/2021 05:25

Pay off the mortgage, retire my husband. He's fed up, he could probably earn more if he went his own way, but that's too big a leap into the unknown while we still have dependent children.

gofg · 17/10/2021 05:56

I would buy a house or flat for myself, give up looking for employment (I'm 62 - who's going to employ me anyway?), and probably nothing else really. It would be lovely not to have to rent any longer and have some security. I'm not in the UK btw so that would convert to a tidy sum here!!

TheUnbearable · 17/10/2021 09:12

I would buy a camper van for about 50k and DH a jag which would be about 70k and buy a house for DS with the rest.

Heyha · 17/10/2021 09:16

Leaving aside DD- some sort of camper van as the 'silly' purchase then the rest would go on the mortgage so that I could explore working PT or similar. It would be spent on freeing up time to enjoy life, anyway.

TacoTues · 17/10/2021 09:23

Deposit on a forever home.

What we want here would cost £600-700k.

So we're stuck in a 2 bed as it's a very expensive area.

Drivingish · 17/10/2021 09:29

I'd buy a house for us, 2 small flats to let (one to DD - am in Wales so doable!), do them all up, pay debts, newish car and enough left for savings, couple of holidays and better Xmas presents for the family, would be life changing.

ColettesEarrings · 17/10/2021 09:47

Couldn't buy a new house for that round here, so I'd sink £30k-£40k or maybe a little more in to making current house absolutely perfect for us. The bulk of the rest I'd put in to providing a pension income. We'd also have a really nice holiday and eat out a bit more regularly at home. I'd buy in some home help too - regular gardener and cleaner.

TroysMammy · 17/10/2021 09:56

I like where I live and I have lovely neighbours but I would buy a bigger house elsewhere costing around 300K. I'd rent my mortgage free house to lovely tenants so the neighbours wouldn't have to put up with the shit some Mumsnetters get on here with their neighbours.

I only work part time but with a monthly rental income I could give up work and use that to fund bills on my new house.

I'd save the rest.

SummerOrAutumn · 17/10/2021 09:59

Buy property as investment for the DC's future. That would get two small houses where we are.
