Dehumidifier or lake land heated airer.....

OhDearWhyAmIFatterly · 15/10/2021 11:50

Hello,
I'm at my wits end with damp smelly washing because it won't dry in this weather!
Quick poll, which is better for getting washing dry quickly?
Dehumidifier with laundry setting or one of those heated airers with a cover?
For context, I have 3 dc and a dh, lots of washing....

My next door neighbour has a dehumidifier and the noise drives me crazy.

I actually want to kill her

OhDearWhyAmIFatterly · 15/10/2021 11:54

Oh that's not good!!!

I do have an unreasonable relationship with noise though so I resist the homicidal urges

GinIronic · 15/10/2021 11:55

Dehumidifier.

CarbonMonoxideParty · 15/10/2021 11:55

Is the neighbours machine dehumidifying a 747?
I've got dehumidifier and it's very quiet.
I have it running when Im on conference calls all day. No issue.

ISaidDontLickTheBin · 15/10/2021 11:56

Not tried the lakeland airer but we get good results with a dehumidifier (ours doesn't have a laundry setting?) - dehumidifiers work better the warmer the room, so performance won't quite be as good if you haven't put the heating on yet. Plus it helps to put washing and dehumidifier in one room and close the door, so the dehumidifier isn't working to try and dehumidify the whole house! But if you have enough space and clothes horses you can dry a whole room full of washing with one dehumidifier.

It's also good for keeping the rest of your house from getting damp in general, but they can be a bit noisy.

InglouriousBasterd · 15/10/2021 11:56

I have the Lakeland heated airer (it’s now ten years old!) and it’s a godsend in the winter. Chuck an old duvet cover over it, it dries quicker and contains the damp air.

CarbonMonoxideParty · 15/10/2021 11:56

I vote dehumidifier for the fact that its noisy at all!

TreXX · 15/10/2021 11:56

I don't know.. I'm embarrassed to ask about it as I know I'm a bit batshit about noise ..
CarbonMonoxideParty · 15/10/2021 11:58

Thing is with heater airer, the moisture is still entering the air and has to go somewhere which will lead to mildew eventually surely.

Dehumidifier removes the water.

I'm surprised how often I empty my 5l container.

Ours is a bit noisy if you put it on a hard or hollow floor. But it's nearly 10 years old! I would expect a newer one to be quieter.
onthinice · 15/10/2021 11:58

I have never tried a dehumidifier but I have the lakeland dry soon (bought off lakeland ebay store as a refurbished model for a fraction of the price!)

I have never had a problem with a damp smell on any of the laundry dried on the heated airer.

QuestionableMouse · 15/10/2021 11:58

Why not a tumble dryer?

WeDidntMeanToGoToSea · 15/10/2021 11:59

I have both. Dehumidifier is more effective overall, as it can 'cover' multiple airers. Ours isn't enormously quiet but it's white noise. Not disturbing-type noise.

Top tip for Lakeland airer is to drape a thin fitted sheet over the top when it's on. It traps the heat and the stuff on the bars dries much more quickly. I only plug it in when I have a lot of washing to get dry or need something dry especially quickly.

AtomicBlondeRose · 15/10/2021 12:00

My dehumidifier is about the same volume, maybe quieter, than the bathroom fan. So not loud at all.

However although it does have a drying mode it doesn’t do anything to help washing dry, and I had high hopes for it! We live in a damp house though.

Merryhobnobs · 15/10/2021 12:02

This thread is good as our current dehumidifier needs replaced. I hadn't thought about the airers not helping the moisture in the air situation. Which dehumidifier do people recommend?

Lemonysherbet · 15/10/2021 12:02

Dehumidifier for me. It has a washing mode too. I tend to leave the doors open and it stops the whole house feeling damp, which means the heating heats the house up quicker

InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest · 15/10/2021 12:05

A dehumidifier hands down. We have this one www.devola.co.uk/products/devola-20l-compressor-dehumidifier-with-hepa-filter-wi-fi-dv20lwf and it's quite and extracts a lot (that's the key when you buy one - the daily extraction capacity - this one is 20 litres). My MIL also bought one after seeing ours. It's quite and you can use it for your washing but also should you ever have any damp issues. Sad but I love ours!

Toomuchleopard · 15/10/2021 12:06

I have 3 kids and we’re all sporty plus have a dog so there’s a ton of washing. I have a tumble dryer plus Lakeland heater airer and use both all the time. Lakeland heated airer is a godsend but I think I would struggle if I didn’t have the dryer too. Maybe you need the dehumidifier too with additional normal airers? I also have the cover as mine is downstairs so nowhere to put it out of sight. It looks like a little tent!

CMOTDibbler · 15/10/2021 12:07

Dehumidifier. We bought our Mitsubishi one when ds was born, and it is still drying laundry efficiently now he's choosing A levels. If you are careful with loading the airer and put as much as possible on hangers for maximum airflow I can do 3 very full loads overnight, 4 if there are a lot of thin stuff like shirts that can go on the hangaway as well.
Its not massively noisy at all

CrabbyCat · 15/10/2021 12:08

We have both, the heated airer is more energy efficient. We open the window a crack in the room with it to let the moisture out, you'd have a mould problem if you used it in a not well ventilated room.
We also have a tumble dryer, so we only use the airer for non tumble dry stuff / things that have a tendency to shrink.

Mum5net · 15/10/2021 12:10

We got refurbed Lakeland one on EBay for student daughter. Perfect. If you buy from Lakeland be sure to use promo coupons

OhDearWhyAmIFatterly · 15/10/2021 12:15

Thanks so much for replies!
You can't tumble lots of clothes items. I do tumble pants socks towels etc. Little known fact.... In the USA clothes are pre-shrunk before being sold, that's why they tumble everything!
In the UK they don't, so that's why DH tshirts shrink if I tumble!

leavingtime · 15/10/2021 12:19

Dehumidifier. Mine's quiet and efficient. Surely you'd eventually have a problem with some excess moisture in the air escaping when using the airer and drying a large amount. Moisture would go to the cold spots in the room/s. Mould spores would multiply slowly and insidiously and in time you'd have a real problem of black patches in corners of walls/ceilings.

Venting the room/s in the winter [letting cold/damp air in] would not completely solve the issue.
