Dehumidifier or lake land heated airer.....

OhDearWhyAmIFatterly · 15/10/2021 11:50

Hello,
I'm at my wits end with damp smelly washing because it won't dry in this weather!
Quick poll, which is better for getting washing dry quickly?
Dehumidifier with laundry setting or one of those heated airers with a cover?
For context, I have 3 dc and a dh, lots of washing....

We have a meaco dehumidifier. It's not especially noisy. There are several settings, so you can turn the fan to a lower speed if it does seem a bit noisy. I work in the same room where the washing/dehumidifier is, so I put it on a lower (quieter) setting when I'm in there, then turn it up and shut the door when I'm not. As others have said though, the sound is equivalent to an extractor fan or a normal electric fan.

I don't have any experience of using the Lakeland heated airer, but as others have said, the moisture still needs to go somewhere so it might lead to damp/mildew in the house unless you always have the window open.

CagneyNYPD1 · 15/10/2021 12:24

Dehumidifier. You want to remove the water from the air, not add to it. I use one for my washing and it collects a fair amount of water.

Bonbon21 · 15/10/2021 12:26

I bought a dehumidifier a few weeks ago and have been gobsmacked at the amount of water it has collected.
The house is already warmer even before I switched the central heating on for the first time last week.

MegaClutterSlut · 15/10/2021 12:27

Dehumidifier, the more powerful the better

altforvarmt · 15/10/2021 12:29

Dehumidifier. Mine is silent. With the dehumidifier on and door closed, clothes dry really quickly. The Lakeland DrySoon would dry a much smaller volume of clothes, I would assume.

@OhDearWhyAmIFatterly

Thanks so much for replies! You can't tumble lots of clothes items. I do tumble pants socks towels etc. Little known fact.... In the USA clothes are pre-shrunk before being sold, that's why they tumble everything! In the UK they don't, so that's why DH tshirts shrink if I tumble!
Always wondered about that!

Another vote for dehumidifier!

They make your house warmer, most houses arent properly ventilated so collect moist air.

The water collected can be used in the iron.

They cost buttons to run - far, far cheaper than a tumble dryer.

@Hyperion100 The iron? Is the water effectively distilled ?

This blows my mind if it is!

What's the extraction rate?
Crunchymum · 15/10/2021 13:15

I was going to say our Dehumidifier has been a godsend (same amount of people and we don't have space for a tumble drier)

Now please tell me more about using the water it collects, in the iron....

OchreBlue · 15/10/2021 14:01

I have both and they work well together, the dehumidifier definitely speeds up the drying time of the Lakeland airer. I've saved quite a bit on my electricity bill since switching to using them instead of our (really rubbish) tumble dryer. Interested in the distilled dehumidifier water a pp mentioned, does anyone know if it can be used for those awkward house plants that don't like tap water? I hadn't thought to use the water before.

Somanysocks · 15/10/2021 14:32

I have a Meaco dehumidifier and it's amazing. It works best in warmer temperatures. I water plants with what's collected.

TreXX · 15/10/2021 14:37

I think I hear the dehumidifier more than the neighbours who use it - I think it must be up against a wall? Is that possible or have I really and truly lost the plot?

It's the constant thrumming I can't stand, I can feel it under my feet in some parts of the house. So it's not exactly the noise, more the vibrations if that makes sense?

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 15/10/2021 14:43

We'd be lost without our dehumidifier! It's got a laundry setting and will dry a full load (9kg) of washing completely in less than a day. I'm always amazed at how much water it removes! As someone else said, it's not completely silent but like a white noise in the background. DH is working from our kitchen since covid and the dehum is running all the time, he hasn't complained about the noise at all.

therespectablecardigan · 15/10/2021 14:52

For those with the heated airer, does it help heat up the room any?

OchreBlue · 15/10/2021 14:59

Yes it really heats up the room, as does our dehumidifier. At the moment we're using it in the evenings to heat one room instead of putting on the central heating. The heat can be a bit of a pain on those warm wet summer days when you can't dry washing outside but we just use it in a room no-ones using if it's getting too warm.

@InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest this is the wattage.... Not sure of extraction rate....

For anyone interested, Home Bargains are doing a heated airer which is a knock off of the Lake Land one. It's £35.

It says it's 20 litres so you should be OK.

Itsme223 · 22/03/2022 18:47

I realise I am jumping on here quite late but I have just started using the dehumidifier and lakeland heayed airer at the same time... leaving the front uncovered and putting the dehumidifier infront of it. Dries clothes quick with no damp!

ChattanoogaShoeShoe · 22/03/2022 18:53

Out of those options I'd go for a dehumidifier. I once bought that Lakeland airer and it didn't seem to work well at all - I ended up giving it to my mum when she started chuntering about getting one

2MinuteRice · 22/03/2022 20:09

We use a dehumidifier it isn't noisy at all. There are 5 of us and it will dry a load of washing overnight. Jeans etc may need a bit longer.

It is better if you can shut the door to dry the washing rather than the house. Never had mould as an issue and in the current house it is in a room with no door. Still works well though.

We have 2 airers and a hanging rail for uniform etc. They don't then need ironing either! Use the octopus thingys for underwear and also have clothes baskets in the same room.
When someone's basket is full they take it up and empty it. School uniform is given to them on hangers on a Sunday night to go straight into wardrobes.

I love ours Grin

We put sheets over the top of the airers and it all still dries.
