How much do you pay for health insurance?

Thinking about the ‘can’t get to see a GP’ thread and the news that more and more people are going private.
If you go private do you pay as you go as needed or pay a premium monthly?
Is it worth it?

£0

SunShinesBrightly · 15/10/2021 21:54

Who pays? Your work?

Premiums vary massively don’t they?
It’s hard to compare.

Around £350/month for family of 5 but is the full package cover including mental health and cancer treatments, which given the state of the NHS currently is needed.

DH is a surgeon and patients are travelling literally miles to see him as they are being quoted between 18months-4year wait for surgery depending on where the patient lives.

Siriisatwat · 15/10/2021 22:07

@PeriChristmas Axa.

The only things I don’t have cover for are mental health and complimentary therapies, would be slightly extra to add those on.

Dogsandbabies · 15/10/2021 22:10

£52 a month for me and 2 kids.

80sMum · 15/10/2021 22:12

We were quoted about £350 a month 4 years ago when DH retired. We didn't take it up, as our income was about to reduce by 75% and we couldn't justify the expense.

Michellebops · 15/10/2021 22:12

I have private healthcare through my work. They pay the premium and I pay the vat on it. It's approximately £44 per month.
I claim money back for dental, physio, optician and other treatments and access to surgery choices. My policy includes my 6 year old and between us we've used the private consultation/surgery 3 times.
I recently added my partner to the treatment section for £17 per month

southcarolina · 15/10/2021 22:25

Blymie, I think I've got a good deal
£92 for me, DP and DD, has all the bells and whistles, and only £100 excess/year

Nannyamc · 15/10/2021 22:26

Here in ROI we pay €320 per month excess of €50 per consultant. €500 each for appointments. Have never been paid over excess. Drugs paid from hse. Have to have it for private treatment which so far has been nil. 35 yrs +

qualitygirl · 15/10/2021 22:27

I'm in Ireland @SunShinesBrightly and my workplace pays for my family and I. It costs them approx €300 per month for 4 of us

namechanging202020 · 15/10/2021 22:41

I've just signed up today £81 for 2 adults and 2 children. No underlying medical conditions excess is £250 also includes unlimited video gp appointments who can do referrals seemed quite a good price

namechanging202020 · 15/10/2021 22:42

Just to add that's for full cover

Nannyamc · 15/10/2021 22:47

It for us is very expensive but we would be in a very precious position if we could not pay it.

mowglika · 16/10/2021 14:08

We pay £114 2 adults 2 children, 1x yearly £100 excess, used it lots for mental health, surgery, also get money back for things like prescription glasses, babies born etc, quite a good deal all in

ssd · 16/10/2021 14:15

Wheres the best place to get advice on this? Ive phoned a few companies and they bamboozle you.
I just want decent impartial advice.

FawnFrenchieMum · 16/10/2021 14:45

For those having trouble getting through to AXA use the call back option, they call you back within a few mins usually. I assume no one can get through as all the agents are calling people back.

QueenDanu · 16/10/2021 14:48

I'm in Ireland but I pay 47 euro a month.

It's a bit of a luxury. I don't really need it. I can afford 55 if I ever need to go to a gp and if I were referred on to a hospital that would be free.

But I have it as a just in case (I get cancer?)

I have never gone private and used the insurance but it's good to know that if I did get an awful diagnosis I could go private.

QueenDanu · 16/10/2021 14:52

That's just for me btw OP.

CaramelWaferAndTea · 16/10/2021 15:01

For me and DS £60 a month, excess £250 through AXA. Pay more for central London hospitals and choice of consultant. They have included free video GP since start of the pandemic but tbh my own GP is much better on the phone. No cover for pre existing conditions for first few years. Husband has type 1 diabetes so no cover for him. Got insurance so that if DS got the same it would be easier, and so far have only used for physio and the GP once in two years.

CrimeJunkie01 · 16/10/2021 15:05

I am with Benenden Health. I think it's £11.60 each a month. I've had scan and Operations with them for free.

idontlikealdi · 16/10/2021 15:27

Me and the kids are covered through my employer. If I wanted to add DH it would be £140 a month

ItWasAScandal · 18/10/2021 18:40

I’ve just had a look. Interesting not for profit organisation but very limited hospital choice. Nothing for many miles from me sadly.
ItWasAScandal · 18/10/2021 18:42

So many different monthly payments! It’s a minefield. Interesting to see how many of you get HI through work.
