SunShinesBrightly · 12/10/2021 21:39

I’m craving it.

It had a green tinge.
Definitely mince with sultanas and was slightly sweet.
1980s school dinners.

How on earth was it made?

Really? 😬🤮

gaggiagirl · 12/10/2021 21:41

I think it had diced apples in too.

Pascha · 12/10/2021 21:42

I heaved reading that 🤮. I'll take iced buns and pink custard with skin instead please.

Curry powder but no other spices. My mum used to do it. I was in university before I knew what curry was supposed to taste like.

MrSlant · 12/10/2021 21:44

...and sliced banana and dry as the desert desiccated coconut. Think ours used to come from a tin with an outline of a man wearing a bowler hat?

RaskolnikovsGarret · 12/10/2021 21:44

I can taste that curry now. Quite appalling and bearing no resemblance to real curry in any way. 🤢

Bleurgh

No wonder I'll still eat pretty much anything Grin

Bobotie is a traditional South African dish which is curried beef with sultanas.
It's delicious if made properly

wolfstarling · 12/10/2021 21:48

It was lovely! No idea how to make it though? Curry sauce from the chippy, sultanas and half a bag of sugar?

SunShinesBrightly · 12/10/2021 21:49

Stop vomiting all over my thread 😡

Think that is how my mum made curry, but with diced beef rather than mince

Mmm... that looks good! Maybe not with the topping though.

'English' Curry in the 1970's would be made with Sharwoods Vencat curry powder.. it was strangely yellow/green ...
My mum always put sultanas in her curry.. I think the recipe was printed on the side of the tins of Vencat . we loved it

Laska2Meryls · 12/10/2021 21:59

Here's the recipe! With Apple and Sultanas ! But not mince ...I expect that school would use mince as it was cheaper.

Omg I remember 1980s curry with apple and sultana!!! I ate it for a decade before I realised it bore no resemblance to ACTUAL curry!!

Allotment123 · 12/10/2021 22:04

My Mum made it and added chicken oxo, curry powder, raisins and water and sometimes chicken Noodle soup mix, she caled it Chow Mein, it was similar to Vespa curry with those lively crispy noodles you would pan fry and they would curl up

Craftycorvid · 12/10/2021 22:04

At my secondary modern they used to add curry powder to the bread rolls served with said curry Confused. Some weird mis-interpretation of nan bread? Crikey, I can visualise it now....greenish bread!

Think it might have been this?

Dear Lord, you have brought back nightmares!!! I have pstd from the ‘curry’ memories Grin I miss the cheese n rice cakes (made like Fish cakes) wth beans as a side ….

You do realise that curry powder is a blend of all the other spices... right? It's perfectly acceptable to use only that provided it's a proper curry powder and not some half baked version with only chilli powder, tumeric and onion...
TractorAndHeadphones · 12/10/2021 22:08

Also maybe I'm confusing the British curry powder with the SouthEast Asian
