I’m craving it.

It had a green tinge.
Definitely mince with sultanas and was slightly sweet.
1980s school dinners.

How on earth was it made?

The green tinge was from the tin of curry sauce. Bought in safeway, opened with an electric revolving tin opener mounted on the wall. I even remember the tin was 68p.

@Knockoneofftheshelftowin

Think it might have been this?
My nan used to make this! I loved it but with chicken not mince. She bought the powder from the butcher's shop and I used to get her to buy me some to take home to uni. They sell the bags of curry powder in most of the butchers where I live now, I must buy some again

I remember the rice pudding with a spoonful of jam in the middle! I always found it too sweet as my mum would make rice pudding at home and the only flavouring was nutmeg. It was delicious!
I really want a hot pudding now.

South Africans have a similar thing. But also with apricots and a custard topping

My mother used to make this, green curry powder, mince beef and onions with sultanas and apples. Very 1980's.

I remember that school dinner. Our school had a rule that everything had to be eaten and to eat the bits you don't like first. Used to sit there gagging trying to eat that crap. That was the only dinner I hated

Floogal · 13/10/2021 16:05

Also I remember my Dad used to make RAF curry (think they served it in the mess). With bananas

I can't read this whole thread. I read about three comments and that was it for me 🤮🤢🤮

Apples and raisins in a curry are my worst nightmare.

cherrytree63 · 13/10/2021 16:11

My mum used to make it with chicken. She kept a dried bay leaf in the curry powder tin which she used to scoop the powder out with.

Sharwoods Vencat curry powder Google says
Sharwood’s Mild curry powder - possible contender but lacks he green tinge! I have some and it makes a very basic curry.

Dinaclass curry mix - Chip shop curry mix? It has a definite green tinge! A real possibility!

Mayflower curry powder Too red? Not green enough? Schøol curry was definitely brown/green!

Homepride curry sauce tin Another strong contender! Cheap curry sauce... is it green enough though?!

Yes, I know it’s a travesty to describe any of the above as ‘curry’ but, according to Asian friends , so are most of the curries served on the curry mile up here. They are created for the British restaurants. When we eat out they order ‘Curry’ - never Dansak, Madras etc. etc.

@Gotthetshirt23 YES!

I seem to be able to taste this just now but I don't remember actually having eaten it.

My mum (half Spanish, is this relevant?,) used to make corned beef curry. So rice, onions, chopped veg (I think) and sometimes sultanas. It wasn't great but I'd give anything for her to make it again for me 💔

MissCruellaDeVil · 13/10/2021 23:26

Yuck!

I was a child in the 70s and we used to have proper cooked school dinners every day with a cook. She made the best butterscotch tart ever, and chocolate crunch.

I remember the curry.. it was beef mince, onions, apple and sultana with the merest hint of curry powder. I also remember the green tinge but have got absolutely no idea what it was.
