Burnt hand hurts as soon as it's out of cold water

Quite a bad burn. I did the 10 mins under cold running water and then it's been in and out of a bowl of iced water since. It's been 2 hours but still hurts so much being out of the water for more than a few minutes. Any tips or do I just need to deal with the pain? Can't keep it in water forever ☹️

A burn with swelling NEEDS to be seen by a professional

The damage isn't always visibly obvious

Is it the whole hand? How large an area?

If the total area affected is larger than the palm of your hand you really ought to go to a&e to be honest

Aloe Vera gel is great for soothing burns and scalds but for bad burns and scalds you need to check with a medic first. I always have aloe gel in the fridge for MINOR burns and things like sunburn but it's not for bad burns

The spices in a curry can make a burn worse too even on the skin.

Absolutely NOT Vaseline that will lock in the heat and mean it's burning more!

Lavender oil is good after a couple of days for minimising stinging and preventing possible scarring but again not on a fresh, bad burn

I think you need it looked at myself

If its across a joint on the fingers you might need it treated. I was told to go to minors with my hand burn. Hurt like hell. It looked fine until day four when my skin turned black and was rock hard. Evidently the contact with air is what makes it hurt

I can't get over the comments of people telling you to apply stuff to a burn! Never ever do that. Yes to cling film after you have ran it under cool water (not iced) but nothing else. If it is over joints or bigger than your palm you need to get it seen to

@Eloisedublin123

Don’t put anything like cling film or products on it, keep it cool, get proper medical advice
Cling film is good advice for a burn

Lavender oil

Burns give off heat. Tell me, what happens when you heat oil...?

Bellringer · 10/10/2021 11:45

Lavender is used undiluted for burns (not with broken skin) and it's very effective

Clocktopus · 10/10/2021 12:11

Not on a fresh burn that is still giving off heat.

If lavender oil or vaseline (fucks sake...) were recommended then they'd be on the list of NHS treatment advice.

Hand is fine today. The only bit that's marked is my thumb, which didn't have the burns dressing on - highly recommended that dressing! I kept it on for about 2 hours under cling film and it took the pain away. That was after cooling for about four hours though!

By whom?
Bellringer · 10/10/2021 17:25

Aromatherapist. Google it. Obviously not a substitute for medical care, but good 1st aid & aids healing

Clocktopus · 10/10/2021 17:42

Again, not on a fresh burn

No. It's terrible terrible advice for a fresh burn. Please don't tell anyone to do this.

DO 👏 NOT 👏 PUT 👏 ANYTHING 👏 ON 👏 A BURN 👏 👏

Not a big painful one anyway. Tiny little bit on your finger? Knock yourself out but not on something like the OP is describing.

Water is your only option really as others have said. But if there’s any blistering or swelling at all, you need to at least contact 111.

MyMabel · 10/10/2021 21:39

Whoever suggested Vaseline for a burn needs to never give advice on a medical or health related question ever again.
