Burnt hand hurts as soon as it's out of cold water

Quite a bad burn. I did the 10 mins under cold running water and then it's been in and out of a bowl of iced water since. It's been 2 hours but still hurts so much being out of the water for more than a few minutes. Any tips or do I just need to deal with the pain? Can't keep it in water forever ☹️

I agree call 111.

It was a curry straight out of the microwave

I did this a couple of years ago. I went to boots who sold me some burn gel but said nothing really works other than time. They were right and it felt better after a few hours. A wet flannel was the best thing.

You shouldn't use ice on burns, only cool or Luke warm water. Hope you recover soon, burns are awful.

Fallagain · 09/10/2021 19:59

Don’t put ice on it!

Take some paracetamol and ibuprofen. Do you have any burn gel?

How large an area does it cover? You may need to get it looked at.

How bad is the burn? Blisters etc?

DH burnt his hand a few weeks ago and was in the same position. I had one of these Burn Shield dressings in the cupboard. I put this on then bandaged over the top - instant relief and no pain. Removed it 24hrs later and all the pain had gone, burn looked so much better.

Curry can be a really bad burn, I've done this before and had to have it dressed every day by a nurse. Be very careful with it & if it's still painful seek medical advice.

cannaethink · 09/10/2021 20:06

I did the same as a pp and slept with my hand in a bowl of water. The pain had gone in the morning. It’s was all my finger tips I burned taking a tray out the over without a glove when I was a super busy waitress while travelling. So sore! No lasting problems though.

Burns can be very painful, I have had a few over the years , cling film is good for covering them. The pain eventually subsides after some time, depending on how large the burn area is. I would never go to the GP, or A& E, for treatment, unless it was a massive and serious burn that was quite horrendous.

Bellringer · 09/10/2021 20:16

Lavender oil

MyMabel · 09/10/2021 20:17

As others mentioned - avoid ice!

I would maybe ring 111 for some advice.

cannotchange · 09/10/2021 20:17

You're supposed to put it under running water for 30 minutes

carlycurly · 09/10/2021 20:19

That burn shield looks fab - going to order some - thanks

safariboot · 09/10/2021 20:19

Been there. Dropped a meal and reflexively tried to catch it. My hand had to be in a bowl of water for basically the rest of the day. Room temp, not super cold.

With burns they tend to be painful even if they're not very serious.

TheProf · 09/10/2021 20:19

I'd go up to minor injuries and they'll dress it with mesh stuff that stops it from scarring. It also stops the nerves from being exposed.

CottonSock · 09/10/2021 20:21

My friend once passed me a baking tray she didn't realise had been over the hob. Similar pain. But within a week it was a lot better.

ChikiTIKI · 09/10/2021 20:22

I think you've gone wrong by using ice. Your hand is too cold now so when you remove the ice of course the warm air on it will feel too hot and it will hurt. You could also damage your skin further with the ice. It should be cold but not ice water. Last time I had a bad burn I walked around the house for the next few hours with my hand in a pint glass and changed the water regularly to keep it cool. Hope you feel better soon.

pinkhampoppy · 09/10/2021 20:22

Using ice can damage tissue further. It's recommended not to use ice on burns.

specialsauce · 09/10/2021 20:22

Keep it in the cold water as long as it takes. When you take it out your warm blood rushes to the skin to warm it up(naturally) - this what feels like burning. Your hand need to warm back up slowly so just keep it in the cold water till the water is warmed by your hand.

Gluestick80 · 09/10/2021 20:24

Lavender oil

No. Please don’t put anything on it.

Sixmonthson · 09/10/2021 20:30

I severely scalded my hand with boiling soup earlier this year and was in absolute agony. I kept it in tepid water for at least 5 hours before calling 111 who told me to go to the hospital. A nurse friend of mine told me you should never use iced water on burns.

I was nearly passing out from the pain and although the doctor told me that nothing would help except time he did put some special burn gel pads over my hand and the relief was enormous. I spent the next few weeks bandaged up with a new pad on twice a day and I cannot stress how much it helped with the pain. I had massive blisters come up but because the site was covered and sterile they never burst and eventually went down with no scarring.

I have since bought several packets to give to friends and family as they helped me so much - I got the first ones from a local chemist but ordered more on line as they were much cheaper.

Ice makes it worse like warm water and wrap in clingfilm it will hurt for a few days

Rainingstones · 09/10/2021 20:32

I recently burnt my forearm quite high up on the oven rack, I couldnt soak it in a bowl of water due to the akward location of the burn.

It hurt like hell, and was blistering. I ran it under the tap but as soon as I stopped it was like someone putting a match to sunburn.

Out of desperation I dabbed Yellow Metanium on it, It was almost instant relief, and I was able to tolerate the bed sheets on it, it was bloody lovely. It stayed on in the shower as its a waterproof barrier., and healed quickly.

I only applied it once.

Propolis cream is healing.
