So learning to drive for around 2 years obviously covid happened which postponed lots and cancelled Theorys ect... I had my theory the start of this year passed with flying colours... I thought that would be the hard bit for me!! I am more hands on... anyway zoom on months later I had my first driving test the other week... I failed with a serious... i am so so disappointed in myself i needed this to be able to take my children to where they need to go while I work.. I have never felt so angry with myself... #1 I can drive... i would not have said this 1 year ago but i really can... i absolutely crumbled on my test i felt sooo shaky and i was breathing like i was in labour! How embarrassing lol... everything was going smoothly i pulled up to a crossroads... the one I had just done in my lesson previous to my test none the less... and I moved into my filter lane to turn right lights were green I edged forward and stopped there was 4 cars ahead of me turning left I obviously know I give way... it's there side of the road.. anyway.. the first two cars went and the next car was a learner and he pulled out stopped went stopped went stopped he was creeping so not stalling... I totally panicked in the moment and I went to go but so did he and I went to put the break on but it disappeared from my foot as the examiner pushed quicker... I'm such a bloody idiot I keep replaying it in my head... i have never in my the past two years felt like this or made a mistake like that.. btw i wouldn't of hit him i was breaking :/ i just dont know if to give up... it took me a good week to scrape myself back to normal after that test it's really knocked my confidence... I did everything I had seen to help with nerves.. good sleep practice practice banana rescue remedy no caffeine water positive thoughts... erghhh I just dont know why I felt like that I felt I could have died with anxiety... do I go on?! Anybody had similar nerves/anxiety situation?? How did you cope?

@user1493494961 I must be your friend! Passed on my 10th go, nerves kept getting to me. Since I passed over 10 years ago I have never had an accident!

Imnothereforthedrama · 09/10/2021 16:19

It’s the most nerve racking thing I’ve done but I did it and so can you keep practicing be confident.

Exact same thing happened to me on my first test, i was inching out and someone was coming and as i braked the examiner braked too. Still think it was a bit unfair he didn't give me a chance to deal with it myself - i hadn't crossed the line. Anyway, i passed on the second go. Just book another one, at least you'll be less nervous as you've done one now.

Yes, definitely. I passed the test that I took them on

Teaandcakeordeath83 · 09/10/2021 16:24

I failed my first test with a serious and a dangerous. Was an absolute nightmare as I just lost my head. I ended the test early as I knew I'd failed (I nearly crashed into a double decker bus so the instructor had physically moved the wheel... 🤦🏼‍♀️) and drove back to the test centre while the test instructor tried to make me carry on. 😂🤦🏼‍♀️ Anyway. I passed second time around with no minors at all. My instructor was so shocked I'd failed the first time- so was I. I wasn't expecting the nerves to hit me the way they did. Second time around my instructor sat in the back of the car for the test and it made the world of difference to me as it made it just feel more like a lesson than a test.

Deep breaths. Rebook. You can do it. You know you can. You just need to give yourself a bit of slack- it's easy to panic and get nervous in a test environment, especially when you're pinning a lot on passing. Best of luck for the next test. X

GoWalkabout · 09/10/2021 16:24

She'll be pleased for you when you pass, it was bad luck that the incident happened. Use driving test cancellations 4 all app to bring your test date forward - good luck.

prsphne · 09/10/2021 16:24

I hit the wing mirror of a parked car on my second test. The person was in the car so I had to pull over, get out and apologise.

I passed third time though!!

CheeseCrackersAndChutney · 09/10/2021 16:27

I took it 4 times 🤣 I passed eventually. Don’t worry oP

Pythonesque · 09/10/2021 16:29

Sounds similar but not as bad as me on my first test - the examiner braked while I was going round a bend in the road barely 100m from the test centre. 2nd test was fine.

Hope you get another test soon, but just keep up with driving whenever you are able to and know that it will be fine.

Pythonesque · 09/10/2021 16:30

Correction, I've just remembered - my second test was fine even though it was raining and I stalled at least 3 times! The difference I guess was that I was clearly used to managing after a stall and just restarted straight away.

RonaKnob · 09/10/2021 16:31

Book another test. I passed third time.

First time I got in the car to test I realised I felt less anxious than with my instructor. So I changed instructor when I failed. Much better.

antoniawhite · 09/10/2021 16:43

My legs shook so much, my examiner asked me if I had a disability I hadn’t declared.
My friend beckoned an old lady onto a v busy and dangerous road in the middle of her test and failed.
We’ve all been there, OP - it sucks. But you will get it xx

ShagMeRiggins · 09/10/2021 16:46

Failed three theory tests (it’s ridiculous these days, don’t get me started) and passed first time with the driving.

You know you’re a safe and competent driver.

Just pretend the person in your passenger seat is a child on the way to swimming lessons—or whatever—and get them where they need to be, the way you normally would.

ShagMeRiggins · 09/10/2021 16:53

Ps—not to dismiss the Theory test entirely as it’s worth knowing what the signs and lines mean, but these days it’s too inflated with crap that has nothing to do with not killing people.

I remember one question that wanted me to know which was more environmentally friendly: tram, tube, bus, or train.

The answer to that question will not help me (or others) stay alive while driving along the M25 at 65mph in four-lane traffic while a vehicle from the far right cuts across three lanes to make an exit.

Practice, practice, practice as much as possible. They want competent, confident, safe drivers.

Crazydoglady1980 · 09/10/2021 16:55

I passed on my fourth test, the first one I failed as the examiner had to use the brake as I came out of a junction. My 4th test was with the same examiner and he told me that it was a new test and not to worry about things that had happened previously. I would imagine they see it a lot.
On the test I passed, I turned left instead of right out of the test centre and thought I had failed, I think this made me relax. Afterwards I told him that I thought I had failed and he said as I had indicated etc properly, he wasn’t going to fail me for getting left and right wrong.
Give it another go, being able to drive opens up a whole new world.

FuckYouCorona · 09/10/2021 17:05

I passed on my third test. Similar pressure as you to pass on the first one. I thought I did OK, but the examiner was in a bad mood & seemed intent on failing me. My instructor agreed. On the second test I had a different examiner but I went to pieces. Third test I had same examiner as the first, he seemed much happier, (first test of the day) & was really friendly, even gave me another chance doing my hill start. You can do this, just keep going! Flowers

BashfulClam · 09/10/2021 17:06

The nerves didn’t ease but I send to have an easier drive the 4th time.

wannabebetter · 09/10/2021 17:07

It took me 3 attempts - in my second one I turned left out of test centre & somehow managed to end up with 2 wheels on the road & 2 on the pavement!Confused totally down to uncontrollable nerves. I too took a beta blocker before test 3 & was fine!!

gamerchick · 09/10/2021 17:12

Noooo don't give up. What happened was unfortunate, learners are unpredictable and coupled with nerves it could have happened to any of us.

Get that test booked again before you talk yourself out of it and ask for some beta blockers short term from your GP. They'll stop the shakes.

Etonmessisyum · 09/10/2021 17:12

I passed 3rd time so few major feck ups before I passed, try again

Rainbowheart1 · 09/10/2021 17:30

You only fail if you give up.
I did 5, yeas five!! (Touch chat wood never had a crash in decades though!)

PanicBuyingSprouts · 09/10/2021 17:39

I failed the first time as well. It was so long ago I can't even remember why I failed.

You've said it yourself, you can drive.

So look for cancellations and practice as much as you can.

Have you ever tried guided meditation? Trying that might help to keep you calm Thanks

PepeSilviaDoesNotExist · 09/10/2021 17:42

When I was taking my test someone drove the wrong way down the one way street I was driving on. I panicked and braked and the bloke I was taking my test with lunged over and grabbed the steering wheel and said I was going to hit him, bearing in mind we were stopped in the middle of the one way road and the other driver was now reversing back down it.

I was so shook up at how aggressively he grabbed the wheel he had to drive me back to the test centre. I obviously failed with flying colours for obstructing traffic Grin I wonder what would have been an adequate reaction in his eyes for me to pass

I passed my next one!

Good luck OP you can do it Smile

PanicBuyingSprouts · 09/10/2021 17:43

That's awful Pepe and sounds so unfair.
