Weekend in Liverpool. What to do?

I'm going to Liverpool in mid November to celebrate a milestone birthday. I adore the city and have wonderful memories from living there years ago. What can we do there to make it memorable? I haven't been for ages and no longer know good restaurants, hotels, etc,

We need:

  • a nice hotel in town, budget approx £150 per room.
  • restaurants with great food (I love food) but informal and relaxed in terms of atmosphere.
  • what seas for things to do during the day. I know there are some great museums, but probably not that. Are the Beatles experience tours any good? Some of my friends fancy it.

Thanks xx

I stayed in The Resident recently and would really recommend it - so near the restaurants on Bold Street.

CopperLily · 09/10/2021 15:04

You'll be spoilt for choice for restaurants here! There's every cuisine imaginable. I personally like Salthouse Tapas and their sister restaurant Bacaro which is Italian. Bold Street is full of restaurants.

iloverock · 09/10/2021 15:06

The tate museum and the slavery museums were excellent.
Beatles museum was good.

Was going to recommend exactly the same! Can also recommend Maray, Rudy’s pizza and Maggie Fu… depending on what sort of food you like! Moose Coffee for breakfast too!

Baltic Market could be worth a visit.

We have stayed at the Hope Street hotel and would recommend it.

If you’re into gin, the Liverpool Gin Bar/Distillery is worth a visit too.

CopperLily · 09/10/2021 15:20

Yes, the Hope Street Hotel is fabulous! We stayed there on our wedding night. Baltic Market is a good shout too!

bumsnett · 09/10/2021 15:22

Hope st hotel and also mowgli for curry on bold st

Toddlerteaplease · 09/10/2021 15:37

Definitely moose coffee for breakfast! I live their pancakes.

Southwest12 · 09/10/2021 15:42

Mowgli for food, but book now as both times I've tried recently to book a table they've been fully booked until 9:45pm. Maray is nice, the Albert Dock one is nicer than Bold Street

The Hardmans house (national trust) on Rodney street is fab and well worth a visit, you have to book in advance as it's small groups.

Jenny's bar is great for cocktails, you can reserve seats there too normally. It's very small but has a lovely atmosphere.

If it's a nice day then you get a good view of the city from the radio city tower, it's about £5 I think.

Thank you for the ideas! Sorry, I was busy yesterday and couldn't reply.

In terms of restaurants, someone suggested Alma de Cuba. Is it any good?

I've checked out Hope St hotel, by the way, bug it costs £335 per room for the dates I need. Ouch!

Imo Alma de Cuba is fabulous for drinks but I wasn’t overly impressed with the food. It was a few years ago now though!

TorySteller · 10/10/2021 20:00

I’ve just put in weekend dates in November and loads of the hotels come up £200+ per night!

I have stayed in the Travelodge on the docks and that was a good budget place to stay - clean and a handy location. Same for the Holiday Inn on the docks too.

Bearsbearsbears40 · 10/10/2021 20:03

I’d agree with Bacaro for food and Alma de Cuba for drinks (not necessarily for the food). I love the Maritime Museum too.

keiratwiceknightly · 10/10/2021 20:09

I'd thoroughly recommend Alma de Cuba's Sunday lunch... decent roast dinner but a gospel choir while you eat. It's a converted church and the whole experience is chilled and lovely.

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 10/10/2021 20:14

The Quarter on Faulkner Street off Hope Street is lovely and relaxed for food and the desserts are lovely. Etsu for Japanese food. There are quite a few Brazilian meat restaurants in Liverpool, I personally like Fazenda.

someofusdontknowwhy · 10/10/2021 20:15

I live in Liverpool so no hotel experience but food wise, Lu-ban, Bacaro and Mowgli. Carlisi is great for cocktails and The Oracle Bar is fab.

Both museums are worth a visit and I'd recommend a stroll around both cathedrals and St James graveyard. Including premiership football teams, we have two of everything in Liverpool Smile

Have a great weekend!

someofusdontknowwhy · 10/10/2021 20:16

There are tons of aparthotels too. Check them out.

tanguero · 10/10/2021 20:16

www.nationaltrust.org.uk/beatles-childhood-homes

The National Trust own John and Paul's childhood homes. You can book the tour to go INSIDE both. To stand in John's teenage bedroom...is something special.

Also the 'Philharmonic pub', one of only two Grade 1 listed pubs in the UK.

someofusdontknowwhy · 10/10/2021 20:17

Oh yes @tanguero - The Phil. Great pub

Shesellsseashellsontheseashore · 10/10/2021 20:17

If you like war museums, there is a underground bunker museum which was a top secret underground war bunker.

Thanks for the thread OP - we’re going to Liverpool at half term and this is all really helpful.

On the list are definitely Mowgli, Baltic Market and Moose Coffee for breakfast, which looks fantastic.

Alma de Cuba claims it’s Latin American inspired but almost a the food sounds like standard European? Nice interior though.

In terms of activities, we’re booked on a City Sights bus tour, and thinking Tate and/or the slavery museum. And probably Beatles Museum.

We’re staying in an apartment called Cove in a block in the centre, recommended by BIL who recently stayed there.

TR888 · 10/10/2021 20:57

Oh, I love the Philarmonic... Lovely memories x

Etsu is amazing! Is it back open?!

Random but I quite enjoyed williamson tunnels for a touristy thing . Or twilight tours at top of cathedral give some spectacular views .

WrongUnBeGone · 10/10/2021 21:05

Another vote for Lu Ban - amazing chinese fusion food in a really relaxed atmosphere. We totally loved it.

The cathedrals are well worth a visit - especially the crypt under the Catholic cathedral - fascinating history!

Popkids · 10/10/2021 21:07

We went for a long weekend recently. It's a great city. I can recommend Cowshed for a lovely steak dinner in a relaxed but elegant setting. I'd also second a PP's recommendation for Moose Coffee DS is still talking about the giant pancakes. The service in both places was brilliant. Hope you have a lovely time!
