Would you take a part time job paying £300 a month if you didn't need to?

I have the opportunity to work 8 hours a day on one day a week. I already work incidentally - from home and I'm self employed

Anyway like I said, this opportunity has come up to work outside the home for just one day a week. 300 quid ish.

I don't 'need' the money as such (I realise I'm extremely fortunate) but it would of course be useful.

So ... would you work for 8 hours a week for £300 if there was no burning need for the cash?

And to be clear - it's £300 for the month!

It depends on what you would be doing.

I might if it what something I would enjoy or get some benefit from apart from just the money? Benefit could be career, networking, meeting people, feeling lonely working at home?

I wouldn't if it wasn't something I would enjoy unless needing the money.

PineappleSmith · 08/10/2021 14:53

Don't know about enjoy as such! The work is relatively straightforward and meeting people and interacting all day. Think posh ish coffee shop type thing

I do, sort of. I do a bit of self employed contract work for a company in the evenings. I can dip in and out as I fancy and it's home based and extremely easy so I can catch up with netflix as I work Grin not well paid but so easy I don't mind. Most months I make around £300ish. Some months more, some months less depending on how much I want to work and when they have work that needs doing.

I don't need it but it's nice to have. If it involved working outside the house for a full day a week I wouldn't bother.

LizzieMacQueen · 08/10/2021 14:56

Yes I would. Extra money will come in handy as taxes and energy costs rise 😟

yourestandingonmyneck · 08/10/2021 14:59

If it would still leave me with some free time, yes.

I've worked in coffee shops before and loved it. If I didn't enjoy it, I wouldn't do it unless I needed the money.

Depends how time-rich you are I suppose.

MrsWooster · 08/10/2021 14:59

Yes-holiday /emergency fund.

Can I ask what type of work this is? Sounds intriguing! Is it something anybody could do or is it something you're trained in?
LublinToDublin · 08/10/2021 15:01

When you say you "don't need the money as such" what does that actually mean?

Do you have gold plated pension pots and a rainy day fund for emergencies or foreseen expenses?
Would there be a cost to working this day? Financial or otherwise?

Porfre · 08/10/2021 15:02

It would depend on my other commitments.
I've got kids.
If it's on a week3en, whonwould be looking after my kids. Also about how much time I would be away from them.
On a weekday if they're in school anyway and I dont have to pay for extra childcare. If the job was easy and very low stress, I'd probably go for it.

TheQueenOfDreams · 08/10/2021 15:04

I’d do it if I had the free time. Extra money always comes in handy, even if it’s for going out and holidaying more.

SentDeliveredRead · 08/10/2021 15:04

If it wasn't weekends, yes, definitely. I'd still have enough free time for my other bits

JaninaDuszejko · 08/10/2021 15:09

When you say you "don't need the money as such" what does that actually mean?

This exactly. If someone was offered a payrise of £300 pcm there wouldn't be many of us who would refuse it surely? And yet we've been coping on our lower salary.

How much do you currently earn for how many hours work? Is the extra money worth the extra hours worked or could you make the same amount much quicker by your day job?

Chasingsquirrels · 08/10/2021 15:10

Personally in my current situation I wouldn't, it's a lot less than I currently earn per hour and if I wanted to earn more I'd increase my part time hours.

But it totally depends on your circumstances.
Current savings & pensions as someone above mentioned, impact on your day to day life, additional costs working might income (childcare, transport, clothing requirements etc), how much you'd enjoy the interaction etc.

Is that net or gross? If net then its pretty much minimum wage, would you be able to generate more than that by working more hours in your self employment?

NoSquirrels · 08/10/2021 15:13

Have you got the time? Will you enjoy the work?

Will it cause you any difficulties or just mean less leisure time - and does that matter to you?

Personally I’d quite enjoy a day a week in a posh coffee shop, variety being the spice of life, and would stick the £300 towards holidays and fripperies, but if you wouldn’t enjoy it and want the time more than the cash then don’t bother.

redfernstation · 08/10/2021 15:13

Yes..and in fact i do! Similar hours and money. We could get by without but it pays for extras

evilharpy · 08/10/2021 16:24

It would be a bit outing to say what it is exactly! It's very specific to the company and I got offered the work through a family member who works there, they need some easy but boring stuff done in the evenings as it can only be done while nobody else be is using the system.

Hoolihan · 08/10/2021 16:32

No I wouldn't. The hourly rate is really low and I would rather just have the time off.

BelindaCinder · 08/10/2021 16:35

Yes@Hoolihan
Isn’t it below minimum wage? Sounds like undercutting honest labour.

lifecoachingandotherbollocks · 08/10/2021 16:38

No, not unless I neeed the money

Paq · 08/10/2021 16:41

It's not lucrative is it? Minimum wage? In that case it's only if you want the extra money.

FAQs · 08/10/2021 16:45

Yes! I work from home full time and have done for years, I’d do this just for the interaction.

PineappleSmith · 08/10/2021 16:59

It's not 'undercutting honest labour' (lol) but it's only £9.20 an hour

And yes, pensions fine. Own my house. Have investments. Have savings.

I have my own business and it does well. It's successful. I pull a set amount from it each month and live off that.

But this came up and I thought ' hmm, over 300 quid which I'd probably just spend on what I fancied and I get to actually come out of the house for 8 hours and interact face to face with people'

And it seemed like a not too terrible idea ..

OP posts:
BelindaCinder · 08/10/2021 17:05

Well if it’s the going rate and you would enjoy it, what is stopping you? I mean that as a genuine question because you haven’t really said, have you?

PineappleSmith · 08/10/2021 17:07

@BelindaCinder good question! I don't have anxiety or anything like that but I don't particularly like working for other people. No idea why!
