Would you take a part time job paying £300 a month if you didn't need to?

I have the opportunity to work 8 hours a day on one day a week. I already work incidentally - from home and I'm self employed

Anyway like I said, this opportunity has come up to work outside the home for just one day a week. 300 quid ish.

I don't 'need' the money as such (I realise I'm extremely fortunate) but it would of course be useful.

So ... would you work for 8 hours a week for £300 if there was no burning need for the cash?

Yes, I can understand that.
Personally, I probably couldn’t be bothered but I’m quite lazy.

MintyGreenDream · 08/10/2021 17:24

I do.I don't need to work for financial reasons due to dh job but I want to contribute and have adult company.

Hoolihan · 08/10/2021 17:53

I'm also lazy and I hate interacting with people so it's a definite no from me.

SlidDownTheElephantsTrunk · 08/10/2021 18:07

No I wouldn't. I'm lazy and already work full time.

OchreBlue · 08/10/2021 18:21

Yeah definitely, I used to work 6 hours on a Saturday for a similar amount, alongside working in the week. Depends what you will get out of it? I didn't need the money but wanted a career change and it was in a different field that let me build up totally different skills and experience than my day job. If it's just a bit of extra money but you don't necessarily need it you could save it up towards a specific thing you want, save it just disappearing into the pot of money.

lachy · 08/10/2021 18:39

I would.

I don't "need" an extra £300 per month, but I certainly wouldn't say no.

It would pay for a holiday!

Tickledtrout · 08/10/2021 18:48

Sounds like the social interaction is as much of a pull as the cash - which is fair for a non demanding, forget all about it when you go home, role. So why not- probably good for your mental health going into winter too.

Polkadots2021 · 08/10/2021 19:05

If you enjoy it then go for it, I say, it'd be like being paid to do a hobby! But if it'll press you for time or stress.you put it's a big fat no as the wage is low.

IncessantNameChanger · 08/10/2021 19:15

No, but I have in the past. I think it depends on your circumstances and what stage you are in life. I have young kids so I have worked 12 hours a week but to be honest it doesnt much improve my quality of life, just stretches my brain. Before I had kids yes why not, when the kids are older - ditto but not right now.

I did apply for a online picking job with sainsbury's 3 days a week and they never gave a answer on my interview. Which kind of cemented the thinking that its probably not worth the stress for a tiny sum.

Disclaimer, it's a lot less than my qualified field

cervixuser · 08/10/2021 19:17

i would - i'm about to do some work for someone on a similar basis. I'm very lucky not to need this money but it's incredibly liberating to go to work when I know that I can tell them if things aren't right and in a way I feel that I'm supporting staff who haven't got that flexibility. If my employer didn't treat their staff well then I'd point that out as quick as you like because I don't need to worry they'll sack me.

SisterAgatha · 08/10/2021 19:21

I might do it for a bit and see how I felt. In fact I did that and am now working 20hrs a week as they asked me for more. I don’t need to buy it’s just extra and takes the pressure off.

This 100%

TooWicked · 08/10/2021 19:22

No, not if I didn’t need the cash, absolutely not.

If I wanted social interaction and to “get out of the house” I’d go and find a hobby or activity that I enjoyed and that allowed me to do that.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/10/2021 19:23

Yeah, sure, if it's a job you'd enjoy.

G5000 · 08/10/2021 19:25

I do - I earn a decent 6 figure salary, but have an extra gig that pays about 3-500 per month for a couple of hours per week. I do it because it's fun and I enjoy it.

CommanderBurnham · 08/10/2021 19:41

Just try it and see. I do voluntary stuff that doesn't pay at all but I get as much out of it in terms of my well being as I do in my paid profession. The money is a red herring.
