The Stand by Stephen King

Mybalconyiscracking · 06/10/2021 21:01

Oh and I love The Lockwood and co books. They are for teenagers but great spooky fun.
The first one is called “The Screaming Staircase”
Andy Serkis reading “The Hobbit” is also very entertaining,

Also “The Devil you Know” by Gwen Adshead is fascinating.
It’s psychological studies of inmates from Broadmoor. Why they do what they do.. truly “ there but for the grace of god…”

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/10/2021 21:09

The stand is one of my favourite books. I have it in real form!
I'll check out the lock wood and Co ones

I've read the devil you know. It really is fascinating

Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead. Really well read and absorbing story.

MillicentSpinning · 06/10/2021 21:13

Ah have just read your 'likes'. Great Circle is none of those! But it's still a great book!

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/10/2021 21:16

MillicentSpinning I'm not tied to those specific books, I tend to devour all sorts! The likes are just my favourite genres.

crankysaurus · 06/10/2021 21:21

Not the genre you mention but Born a Crime by Trevor Noah is a very good listen, as is A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell. And War of the Worlds as narrated by David.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/10/2021 21:22

crankysaurus oh I can't do war of the worlds. The sounds the tripods make creep me out too much! Grin

Fair enough!

DenbyChina · 06/10/2021 21:23

Jo Spain’s crime novels are quite good, as are Sarah Ward’s.

Have just finished Piranesi by Susanna Clarke. Brilliant and brilliantly read.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/10/2021 21:24

DenbyChina thank you

,Where The Crawdaddy's Sing’ by Delia Owen. Narration is amazing and I still feel a little bereft since I finished this book on my dog walks

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/10/2021 21:35

Hunnybadger1 thanks

If you like true crime, really recommend Unnatural Causes by Dr Richard Shephard. He was a prominent forensic pathologist and worked on some high profile cases, it's a fascinating listen.

This is a wonderful book but doesn't fit into any of the three genres you mentioned, just so you know. Totally recommend it anyway though!

I’m an audiobook director and my recommendations are based on narrators because, as we know, they make or break a book! You can’t go wrong with the following:

Dion Champman
Dominic Hoffman
Bahni Turpi
Adenrele Ojo
Fiona Hardingham
Olivia MacKenzie
John Lee
Vikas Adams
Imani Parks
Lawrence Kao
John Lindstrom

Can send you loads of others if you’re interested!

KobaniDaughters · 06/10/2021 21:47

Should have spell checked: should be Bahni Turpin and Olivia MacKenzie-Smith

LoveFall · 06/10/2021 21:47

This one is science fiction but really, really good.

Project Hail Mary

I was very sad it had to end.

HerRoyalRisesAgain · 06/10/2021 21:49

KobaniDaughters interesting, thank you

LoveFall thanks

The rivers of london series by Ben aaronovitch is a favourite of mine, and there is a good few books in the series to keep you busy. And the narration is the best I've heard.
