So France is going to cut off the electricity supply to parts of the UK

Or so they say, the Channel Islands in 2 weeks.

Really? How have we got to this?

How do we protect the channel Islands, and of course, ourselves.

This was my biggest concern preBrexit, that we would be out of the EU ultragrid.

We need to be totally self sufficient - obviously that means renewables, and very fast

France playing silly games as usual. Mr Macron does like his own way it seems. Not half showing what they really think of us. It's all very sad and very childish. Is there not enough trouble in the world?

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 06/10/2021 08:57

Macron is such a horrible bastard.

MintJulia · 06/10/2021 08:58

Sums up why we should never rely on any other country. political blackmail is just too easy.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 06/10/2021 09:00

Macron is a twat.

ScaryHairyMcClary · 06/10/2021 09:02

The worse thing is that the Channel Islands are not in the UK and had no say over Brexit. They were not part of the vote.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 06/10/2021 09:06

Ok so it's to do with fishing and they are upset because "The UK government is refusing to grant many licences for French fishermen that were a part of the post-Brexit UK-EU trade deal."

CorrBlimeyGG · 06/10/2021 09:10

There's a simple answer, the government needs to stop being so petty minded and actually cooperate with our neighbours.

If we stop acting like arseholes then they will too.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/10/2021 09:12

The licenses aren’t being granted because the fishermen didn’t stick to the rules of using GPS. Now they are blackmailing the U.K.

Ozanj · 06/10/2021 09:12

It would be illegal and the UK government would have the right to take the grid over if that happened, losing those companies billions. It isn’t a realistic threat in anyway and I bet the companies involved are furious for being brought into what is a political matter.

CorrBlimeyGG · 06/10/2021 09:13

The trade deal our government seemingly forgot to read before signing.

How do you suggest they take the grid over?

We are reliant on Europe for energy. That isn't a "political" fact, that is a physical fact

Yep, consistently abiding by previously agreed and signed arrangements would be a start when it comes to cooperation.

Instead we have apparently one party playing fast, lose and with inconsistency when it comes to the licensing and then griping when there is any hint of blow back.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 06/10/2021 09:19

Not is this case, no.

The fishermen were turning off their GPS and they now cannot provide enough data to satisfy the requirements.

It’s the French who didn’t read the terms and are now unhappy about something they signed.

Would you be happy for someone to keep poaching?

PicsInRed · 06/10/2021 09:24

France is acting like a controlling husband, scorned, one giant walking MARAC conference.

Thank goodness we aren't married to him anymore, but now he'll punish the kids the Channel Islands to get to us. I mean, he seems great, why'd we leave again? 🤔

longwayoff · 06/10/2021 09:24

I think you know how we got here. More to the point, how the hell will we get out of the total f up that's happening? This is just the beginning.

Djifunrsn · 06/10/2021 09:31

Macron is like this. I don’t know what’s the matter with him but he loves making stuff difficult and making ridiculous threats. Not just to other countries but also within France. It almost makes me grateful to have Bojo in office as he won’t stand for Macron’s shit. And believe me I’m no Bojo fan.

FreeBritnee · 06/10/2021 09:34

I’m old enough to remember the fishing drama when we entered the EU all those years ago. Always been the same. I’m surprised the yellow coats aren’t setting fire to the tunnel.

notimagain · 06/10/2021 09:51

Interesting timing to all this..

Today the DM is running front page two anti-Macron/anti French stories.

Accusations in places of Macron wanting to appear hard in the run up to the elections here next spring…French being unreasonable..usual stuff…

Yet in the UK the PM addresses the party faithful today….

Just a coincidence I’m sure.

Funny isn’t it

So, unreliable food supplies, no petrol/diesel, no electricity. We're going to end up like an off grid Albanian village 🙄 time to start keeping chickens and goats in the kitchen.

thereisonlyoneofme · 06/10/2021 10:17

Reports that they are going to blockade Eurotunnel and Calais now.
and they will get away with it

rocklamp · 06/10/2021 10:18

Oh no, the French are revolting 😮

(I wish we could)

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 06/10/2021 10:26

The French have never got over the fact that the Channel Islands are British/English. Except that they're not - they were Norman and didn't join the French crown. England is probably a dependency of the Channel Islands rather than the other way round :)

Add in fishing rights. What is it about fishing which is so visceral? Who cares other than the fisher(wo)men themselves?

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 06/10/2021 10:27

Just to say though the islands do have their own generators so it's a pain for them but they won't be in a blackout.
