Can I not get my covid jab any quicker?

So I'm booked in next Wednesday for my first covid jab. But on the the NHS website it is allowing me to book my second jab but the date its giving me is right before I go on holiday in December.

Is there not a walk in option that I can book in to for a months time?

I think they are still working in an 8 week gap between vaccinations.
Keep an eye on a walk in clinic near you, and see if that changes, but I suspect they will all be min 8 weeks.

Bloody hell. I will have 15 days before I fly out, do you think that's going to be in issue Confused

I think you're ok as long as you have it 2 weeks before you go away

Just have your first one and then try and re book your second jab, I found that way to be the quickest. Also with holidays as long as the second dose is 14 or more days before the holiday you are fine.

Twizbe · 05/10/2021 21:40

Depends where you're going really. Some places have stipulated how long from second jab until you're considered fully vaccinated.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 05/10/2021 21:43

Can you walk in and have your first any earlier?

WhatsitWiggle · 05/10/2021 21:48

There has to be 8 weeks between 1st and 2nd jabs and most centres are sticking to that as it's government guidelines. Check around for walk in clinics this week.

My sister has had an absolute nightmare with her covid jab. We have all got ours quickly and with no hassle at all but sheesh she is so stressed!

Had her first in June and 2nd booked for end of august. Then caught covid in July and you can't have 2nd vacc within x number of days within positive pcr so had to cancel booked 2nd vacc appt.

She is now something like 17 weeks since first jab and is still struggling to get her 2nd. She doesn't drive and all walk in clinics and vaccination centres are 3 bus rides. She even had a call from NHS vaccination service asking why she hadn't been for 2nd but they still couldn't help her!!

Fingers crossed she might have found somewhere for Thursday.

Why would you want to get it earlier OP as it won’t be effective? You need to wait eight weeks minimum otherwise it can cause issues.

I didn't know that, on line it says it can be 4 weeks apart.

Can you find a walk in option and get your jab tomorrow? 8 weeks for your second will then be early December.

Once you have your first, you can remake your second appt or call 119 to move it.

All the trials were done on a 3-4 week gap. The government chose a longer gap to get more people vaccinated in a shorter amount of time. The difference in effectiveness is not a lot so there is no need to panic over that.

It doesn't cause any issues at all.

rainyraindrops · 05/10/2021 21:59

I have found a walk in for tomorrow, I would be able to get there till 30 mins before they shut though.i wonder if there will be a long queue

I don't think demand is as high now so you should be fine

What issues? All trials were done with shorter intervals than 8 weeks. So curious what issues you think it will cause?
Newhorizon21 · 06/10/2021 02:27

Book your 2nd dose after you've had you 1st

voxnihili · 06/10/2021 06:35

What jab is it? I had Pfizer and only had a 6 week gap - all organised through my GP. I was hoping to get it earlier than 8 weeks for a holiday but couldn’t find anywhere that would do it before 8 weeks. Then received a text from my GP to book it around 5 weeks after my first.

Nearlyadoctor · 06/10/2021 07:14

I don’t understand why you’ve waited until now to book your first jab tbh, unless you’re between 12-15yrs old which I’m guessing not.

Shirazboobaloo · 06/10/2021 09:28

The issue is that it will be less effective for the OP and for general population, plus if OP tries to get it earlier than 8 weeks ( a few days either way fine) it may invalidate vaccination certificate needed for travel.

A shorter gap means less antibodies and also less protection against more virulent strains such as Delta

The dose interval was reduced from 12 weeks to eight to ensure everyone got a vaccine (so some protection) in light of Delta.

Any shorter gap (below 8 weeks) would not give recipient best protection.

Given timings OP I think you will be fine as you will have two weeks post-vaccine before you travel. Just ensure that you get app ready after first dose so it automatically refreshes quickly once you have had the second jab.

Enjoy your holiday too!

It doesn’t cause issues at all. In fact most of us that are cev were offered it within 4 weeks of the first dose.

Not true. Pfizer recommend 3 weeks which is what most other countries have done. We left it longer in order to allow more people to get some level of protection more quickly and found in consequence, the vaccine might be slightly more effective or long lasting in doing so.
WeAreTheHeroes · 06/10/2021 09:39

@Shirazboobaloo - please stop spouting nonsense about vaccine effectiveness. The gap between jabs is specifically to ensure as many people as possible have at least some protection and to allow the NHS to manage giving two jabs to the adult population. It has absolutely nothing to do with effectiveness.
