Looking at secondary school age in maths and science up to A level, what is the going hourly rate you pay/get paid or would be willing to pay for your child’s private tuition?

It's £40-£50 an hour around here, at the top end for A level.

DarwenToDartmouth · 04/10/2021 20:47

Currently paying £40/hour for A level maths tuition,

VinoEsmeralda · 04/10/2021 20:50

Thanks, and if it was just years 7-9 would that be less or still around the same price as A level?

I charged £50 per hour pre covid. I was tutoring Years 9, 10 and 11. I had a colleague who wouldn't tutor for under £60 but also friends who tutored for less (around 30-35). Exam year groups, especially A Level, were likely to pay more.

pompey38 · 04/10/2021 21:08

What area you’re all in? down south is £30 for gcse’s and £40 for a-levels. £50-£60 is proper piss take , only because you’re Surrey or London , totally unjustified and pure greediness

TaRaLa · 04/10/2021 21:14

Down South @pompey38

@pompey38 - I agree some of the fees suggested by tutors is a proper piss take. There is a group on Facebook of tutors who often boast about what they charge for very basic tutoring (improving maths and English at primary level). I am a teacher (not a tutor) - in many cases parents are paying too much.

CrazylazyJane · 04/10/2021 21:20

I charge £50 an hour, flat rate for any year group. I'm in London.

surreygirl1987 · 04/10/2021 21:22

Surrey. I don't think my fees were a 'piss take' though. It's not like I forced anyone to hire me! Loads of tutors around down here so if someone didn't want to pay my fee they didn't have to hire me, and could have got someone cheaper.

Shadowboy · 04/10/2021 21:24

If I travel to the student £40 if in my home then £35 but I don’t do it anymore due to COVID

pompey38 · 04/10/2021 21:25

CrazylazyJane why so much ?? you’re teaching exactly the same thing as a tutor in Hampshire or Sussex . How do you justify your rate?

secular39 · 04/10/2021 21:25

@BonnesVacances

It's £40-£50 an hour around here, at the top end for A level.

I paid £35 per hour for GCSE French tuition last year. DD got a Grade 9 so it was definitely worth it!

MissDollyMix · 04/10/2021 21:26

Dh did a lot of research on this recently. Ranged from £25/hour to £90/hour. We settled for a local tutor who charges £30/hour. £30-40 seemed the most common price point.

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 04/10/2021 21:27

I charge £25 for GCSE and £30 for A-level. I haven’t increased prices in 10 years though so think I need to soon.

Noodledoodledoo · 04/10/2021 21:31

I am within 40 minutes, north of London and charge £25 an hour, for yr7-11, £20 for year 5/6. I don't do much as time restricts me. I did charge £30 an hour for one who insisted I did it on a Saturday - which I tried to avoid.

I think its nuts the amount some charge.

pompey38 · 04/10/2021 21:34

TaRaLa- I’ve had tutors on and off since SATS exams age, anything over £40 an hour for A-levels is pure greediness

surreygirl1987 - so you set your prices around what’s trending in the area? going by your name you’re in your early 30’s so not exactly 20 years experience under your belt . Do you travel to your pupils home? or how do you justify this exaggerated rate you’re charging??

surreygirl1987 · 04/10/2021 21:49

@pompey38 yes I'm 34. I set my price at a) what I think people will pay (so yes, to an extent based upon prices in the area, although upper end) and b) what I am willing to do it for. I'm busy so I only do tutoring if I feel it's worth my while, taking into account the time I spent planning as well. I do travel to their home (but I choose not to take on pupils more than a few miles away). One of my pupils lived round the corner, which was handy. I don't think I need to 'justify my fee... it's like any service. People choose me if they are willing to pay my fees. If not, there is a great deal other choice and that's fine! It's a choice I make when paying for a haircut or a meal or anything else really.

surreygirl1987 · 04/10/2021 21:51

@pompey38 "anything over £40 an hour for A-levels is pure greediness"

Genuinely interested in this point... why do you think this?

CrazylazyJane · 04/10/2021 21:55

@pompey38 How do you know that you'd be getting exactly the same as a tutor in Hampshire?

I know my worth. As @surreygirl1987 said, no one is twisting anyone's arm to hire us. If you think that's too much, then move along and find someone cheaper. Cheaper tutors will exist. However, I have a very good success rate, rely on word of mouth to generate new pupils and parents are happy to pay for what they see as a valuable service.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/10/2021 22:07

We paid £35 per hour for maths. Probably had 8hrs and it was money well spent.

Nat6999 · 04/10/2021 22:09

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/10/2021 22:10
