Looking at secondary school age in maths and science up to A level, what is the going hourly rate you pay/get paid or would be willing to pay for your child’s private tuition?

Paying £30/oh for online chemistry tutorials for my yr13 DS from a professor.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 04/10/2021 22:21

My standard tutoring rate is £65 p/h though it varies a bit. I would say £50 is pretty normal, although I know tutors charging up to £85.

Near me (SE) it ranges from £20-70. I pay £40 because the tutor is amazing, my child adores the sessions. The £20 tutor we tried briefly was pointless and disorganised.

worriedatthemoment · 04/10/2021 23:19

I was paying £35 south west , couole years ago , more like £40 ish now

steppemum · 04/10/2021 23:23

While the price does seem to reflect the area and the level (GCSE/A level etc), no-one seems to mention the qualifications of the tutor.

I am stunned by how many people with zero qualifications or experience tutor, and expect to be paid highly. There should be a clear difference between qualified staff and not qualified.
My niece did it over the summer, she is an A level student herself and she tutored year 7 -9. She got about £15 an hour, which seems fair.

I tutor, I am primary trained and I tutor mostly for 11+. I would not consider teaching secondary level anything.

Do check their qualifications.

Kite22 · 04/10/2021 23:24

Some of the prices quoted on here, are ridiculous.
I looked at tutors when my dc was struggling with one of their A levels. Even through agencies, no-one was charging anything like these figures.

Are you the person thinking of setting up as a tutor, or the person looking for a tutor for their child ?

Either way, I think it depends what you are offering. Are you a current teacher with up to date knowledge of the syllabus and exam boards ? Or are you are person who "just" understands the subjects and is willing to help explain concepts to young people?
Are you preparing lessons or going through homework / assignments / exam papers with them?
Are you F2F or on-line ?
Then, are you 1:1? Or small group ?
Are you travelling to their home ?

tunnocksreturns2019 · 04/10/2021 23:26

I’m paying a Y13 A Level student £20 an hour to teach my Y8 DS. He is excellent.

MrsKeats · 04/10/2021 23:29

I charge 28 per hour.

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 04/10/2021 23:33

The English tutor for my kids was £90 - north London. But he was very very good.. and was always at capacity. I was actually pretty poor when I hired him!

SqueakyPeaks · 04/10/2021 23:35

I charge £25 for 45 mins - works out about £33 an hour. I turn down work constantly - so I could probably charge more. I'm booked solid until next September.

MrsKeats · 04/10/2021 23:48

People who charge ridiculous rates better be careful as people can use zoom etc so area not important.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 04/10/2021 23:52

£90 per hour? How on earth can that be justified?Confused

MrsKeats · 04/10/2021 23:53

It can't be pellegrino

TrampolineForMrKite · 04/10/2021 23:54

I charge £30 online/£35 in person for GCSE and £40 online/£45 in person for A Level. London.

it is supply and demand.

I only take 6 students per year. I tutor for the 11+ exam, and because of where I am there ar every few tutors in our town.

I was booked up for this September before Christmas last year, with a waiting list. I still have a waiting list.
I already have most of my students for September 2022, and one for 2023.

I charge £30 an hour, which I think is fair. But I know I could easily charge £40-£50 and they would pay. I feel that is too much.
£30 per hour is a good wage.

ShrikeAttack · 05/10/2021 00:03

We pay £45 for English and maths, years 8 & 10.

Seems pretty standard around here, Cheshire.

BungleandGeorge · 05/10/2021 00:32

Crazy money.
It would be cheaper to send your child to a private day school than 3 hours a week at £90 an hour. £20 an hour for an a level student- that’s more than most peoples’ net pay

BungleandGeorge · 05/10/2021 00:33

Are tutors actually working face to face? Why pay such a premium for location when it can be done by zoom?

HemanOrSheRa · 05/10/2021 00:49

£30/hour f2f here in the SW for GSCE Maths. That seems about average here.

vickibee · 05/10/2021 06:44

We pay £20 for an hour in South Yorkshire. It seems a bargain compared to other people’s rates and my child has high functioning asd so he is harder work than most.

Most of my pupils are already at private schools...
Ethelswith · 05/10/2021 07:41

Round here, it's typically £35 -£50 per hour depending on age/stage of pupil and experience of tutor.

Current/recent teachers can charge higher rates for eg GCSE because of experience with the syllabus and mark schemes.

MrsKeats · 05/10/2021 07:45

Exactly bungle
I have some London students now over zoom; I work for an. online school too so am used to delivering the syllabus that way.
Hopefully some of the crazy prices being quoted might be flattened a bit because of this.

kinzarose · 05/10/2021 07:53

Can I ask what you provide for £60+ an hour? Do you make up detailed notes for the tutee or other 'extras'? I cannot believe people pay up to £90ph!
