Birthday month or a few months after?

When their clothes start looking a bit small. I wouldn't automatically get new clothes because they were a year older on paper, if the clothes they have fit them well.

Dizzylizzy40 · 04/10/2021 12:14

When they grow out the old size .. my 4 yr ols is in size 5-6 but my 2 yr old is still in 18-24 months.

Leftphalange · 04/10/2021 12:14

When they grow out, the age ranges are just a guide.

When they grow out of the ones they're currently in.

Come on.

Sirzy · 04/10/2021 12:16

When they need that size!

The ages aren’t a one size fits all you know.

Ds is nearly 12 but still comfortable in age 10

PeonyTime · 04/10/2021 12:16

When the clothes are too small.
(My 12 yr old is in age 8 shorts, aged 10 trousers, long if we can get them)

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/10/2021 12:17

When they grow out of them. Which can vary depending to item or shop.
My 10yo wears 11-12 leggings but 9-10 tops. 8yo wears a mix of 7-8, 8-9 and the odd bit of 9-10 she snaffled when her sister outgrew it.

Tee20x · 04/10/2021 12:17

Surely when the clothes start getting too small? Age range is just a guide and the reality depends on things like where baby carries weight and their proportions.

My 9 mo has been wearing 9-12 mo clothes since about 7 months because she is chunky and tall.

LouLou198 · 04/10/2021 12:17

Just pass stuff on to the charity shop when they don't fit anymore and buy new as needed, in whatever size fits. I've found as with adult clothing sizes can vary by shop, so my dd is 6 but also has age 5 and 7 clothes in her wardrobe.

faithfulbird20 · 04/10/2021 12:18

Alright alright people keep your hair on. I just wanted to know peoples opinions/what they do.

When it doesn’t fit them anymore.

TheGrumpyGoat · 04/10/2021 12:21

When the current ones no longer fit them.

Oh dear, it never occurred to me to buy his new clothes around his birthday. I just do it when I need to, regardless to age. Generally speaking I buy clothes in one size up if we are at the end of the season and they can be used next year. Or if they are items I know they will last several years. Otherwise I buy in his size. At the end of summer/winter I put away what's not ruined for the next year, but I re-assess when I take them out. Some might fit, some might be too small and then I buy replacements.

Does it answer your question?

Pinkflipflop85 · 04/10/2021 12:21

When they need them...

If I paid attention to the age on the labels and waited until they reached that age then my very tall children would look a bit ridiculous!

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 04/10/2021 12:22

It also, like adults clothes, depends on the shop.
Some 5-6 are huge for my dd who is 5 and she can get into age 3-4 but then also some size 6. It depends on the cut of the clothes and size of child.
If I'm buying for a present unless I know the size or they seem bigger than ageI tend to go for birthday age

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 04/10/2021 12:23

When they start to look a bit hand me down 😂

I cannot shop quickly enough to keep the little sods in clothes! It seems whenever I buy them new within weeks they’re up a size!

My three year old has just started preschool and is in 5-6/6-7 clothes because he’s so tall. The preschool uniform doesn’t go that big so he’s had to wear supermarket equivalent 🤦🏻‍♀️

That being said I suppose it’s the same as shopping for grown up clothes - the sizes differ massively. I find next is usually a size smaller than average, same for Gap and the fashion stores (don’t get me started on Zara!) whereas Supermarkets and Marks tend to have a little growing room.

I suppose it’s less moving them up but I bin the clothes when they start looking outgrown and just replace as needed in a size that has a little growing room.

And my tiny 8 year old would be walking around like she was wearing a clown costume if I tried to put her in 8-9 clothes 😂. She’s still in mainly 5-6.
RobinPenguins · 04/10/2021 12:23

When the clothes are too small. My very long legged 3 year old has a pair of age 7 tights.

Yourstupidityexhaustsme · 04/10/2021 12:25

That being said I have a friend who sticks to the age range religiously and her daughter’s clothes are always too small.

lilacdinosaur · 04/10/2021 12:30

When they start to get too small in that size. My two year old was in 12-18 month clothes at 7 months old but she levelled out a bit and is now just going into 2-3.

TheVolturi · 04/10/2021 12:31

Well op, when do you buy the next size up in clothes, before you eat the 12 pack of Krispy Kreme or after?

Afoxtail · 04/10/2021 12:31

I tend to do it seasonally so if I can get away with the next size up for the upcoming season I’ll buy bigger so they last 6 months.

Pythonesque · 04/10/2021 15:46

After a bit children tend to lengthen much more than widen, so some styles of clothes can last quite a while if bought generously in the first place. I suspect we may have had things with labels between 4 and 10 in use at the same time. I did do a slight double take when I realised I was replacing my 11 yr old son's school PE shorts for the first time since he was 4 though!! They were quite long on him when he started though.

fassnk · 04/10/2021 18:23

DS was a June baby, so we are lucky that he has his birthday then and Christmas 6 months later. I always ask the grandparents for clothes in the next size up from the ones hes in as gifts.

TamponSupport · 04/10/2021 19:00

Grin if I kept DS in the right aged clothes, he's look ridiculous! He has always been two age-sizes larger than he should be.

DD is 9 and 138 tall. Size 134cm (9 years old) are beginning to look on the small side, so she's mainly wearing 140's now. Anything I buy now will be 146 (11 year old), I just bought some long sleeved t-shirts, they look ever so slightly large on her but will be fine for the whole winter and spring, maybe still ok in autumn next year.
