Birthday month or a few months after?

Usually when they’re nearly the second age on the label - so mine wore 6/7 until they were about 7. But that was a rough guide, I didn’t replace anything that didn’t need it. That child has some 5/6, some 6/7, some 7/8, some 8/9 and a pair of 3/4 shorts in their wardrobe- all fits.

kowari · 04/10/2021 19:10

When they are too small. Depends on growth, clothing brand, whether it's tshirts and shorts that can last years or trousers where length is important, and so on. He wore a favourite age 6 tshirt from age 5 to 10!

ElephantandGrasshopper · 04/10/2021 19:12

My children are small and wear the size below what they 'should' be wearing.

I always make the mistake of buying school clothes in the next size up so that they will last, then they inevitably get ruined before they are grown into Hmm

My 10 year old has clothes ranging from 5-6 to 11-12 and everything in between.

I do try and buy with a bit of growing room when I get new things though. So if it was for a birthday present I'd maybe get something a bit big rather than exact fit, as long as it didn't look ridiculous.

YoghurtWeaver · 04/10/2021 19:14

Yes, the day my child turned 10 I disposed of all his age 9 clothes and replaced his entire wardrobe with age 10 ones.

Oh no, wait. That would be insane Confused

I just buy things as and when he needs them. Doesn't everyone?

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 04/10/2021 19:14

When they need them.
I work in a nursery and the amount of parents that keep their children in too small clothes is infuriating.
A child toilet training or recently dry can't independently go to the toilet if their clothes are too small, it leads to accidents and distressed children all because the parent thinks their larger three year old must be squeezed into too tight leggings because they say age three on them!

Florencenotflo · 04/10/2021 19:20

When the clothes they have look small.

Dd1 was always ahead in size compared to her age. So she's nearly 6 and in 7-8 leggings now and probably going to need 8-9 tops in the new year because she's so tall. She's as tall as my 7.5 year old niece. She also hates tops being short so does wear them baggy.

Dd2 however was 2 in August and still fits in most of her 18-24 month stuff. Dresses in particular are fine, leggings are fine. Jumpers are getting a bit snug and a lot of her stuff in that size is summer stuff, so she may have to move into the next lot of hand me downs because she needs warmer clothes.

But I don't tend to take much notice of the age/clothes size thing.

ACNHMAMA · 04/10/2021 19:24

You're doing well to have clothes that last them a year OP. My DS outgrow everything after about six months. I bought uniform in August that's looking a bit short in the arms on giant DS1 already.

moofolk · 04/10/2021 19:26

One of my eleven year old twins wears age 13, the other age 8.

AFuturisticalSound · 04/10/2021 19:28

Is it a trick question? How can the answer be anything other than when they clothes they are wearing are too small Confused

Plotato · 04/10/2021 19:31

Child is so far average sized so clothes pretty much match her age. Coming up to age 3 it seemed a waste to buy 2-3 still but 3-4 would swamp her. Relatives all seem to size up so at Christmas aged 2.5 they'd buy age 3-4. Most clothes she's had as presents she's not been able to wear until 9-12 months after receiving them.

Sippinongingernjuice · 04/10/2021 19:32

I cant tell if this is a wind up!

evilharpy · 04/10/2021 19:33

My 6yo, 7 next month, is bang on 50th centile for both height and weight but has only just come out of 5-6 and even then it's only because they were getting too short. Some 6-7 is still a bit big and 7-8 would drown her - I bought her some 7-8 jogging bottoms and they fall straight down.

When she was a toddler she was usually in the size for her age until she got to maybe 4 and then started to get a bit behind. I can't understand it as friends with children the same age as her that really look to be the same size tell me that they are in 7-8 or even 8-9. Some pass on clothes their child has outgrown that fit mine perfectly or even need to be grown into.

HeronLanyon · 04/10/2021 19:39

I’m mid 50s and wear children’s 14-15 in some sports stuff !! Grin

Forgetaboutme · 04/10/2021 19:39

I get what you mean!

I kind of go by birthdays. So when my son turns 9 I'll probably start buying him 9-10. I won't throw out his old stuff till it doesn't fit though.

Fallagain · 04/10/2021 19:49

Another for when it doesn’t fit! Today I started buying 8 to 9 yr stuff for my tall 5.5 yr old. At the start of each season I have a quick check to see if they need anymore of particular items eg jumpers and gloves are on the current list.

kowari · 04/10/2021 19:49

Wouldn't you just skip sizes then? DS was always on the small side of average and once he was school age I only bought every second size which would then fit for two years. By the time he'd grown out of one size the next would have no room for growth at all as there is so little difference between sizes. I certainly couldn't imagine buying every size for a child who was growing faster than average.
StrawberrySanta · 04/10/2021 19:54

It varies so much between kids but I would never associate a birthday with going up a clothes size, it's more just when their current ones are looking small. I've got a 2.9 year old just going into 3-4, and an 8 month old in 12-18. but I know another 8 month old who is in 6-9 and some 3-6 still fit them.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 04/10/2021 20:07

When she outgrows them, but in reality it's more like twice a year. Once for autumn/ winter and once for spring/summer.

helpthewhos · 04/10/2021 20:08

My 10 year old is wearing 12-13 and 13-14. My 7 year old has just started wearing 8-9 but is so skinny some of it won't stay up, and he doesn't like jeans etc where the waists are adjustable, but he is too tall for all the 7-8. Fortunately they both spend most of their time in either school uniform or football kit so not too much of an issue!

FuzzyPenguin · 04/10/2021 20:08

Another vote for when he needed new clothes. When DS was a baby he tended to run about 3 months behind the clothes size, which was frustrating when I bought season clothes in advance.
Now as a 7 year old he tends to change top sizes just before his birthday and his bottoms 6 months after his birthday.

purplesequins · 04/10/2021 20:09

when the clothes don't fit anymore.

the sizing is so inconsistent you can't rely on the sizing anyway ime.

CoastalWave · 04/10/2021 20:09

Eh? When they're too small?!

My 7 year old is wearing age 12. My 8 year old is still in 6-7.

There's not one size fits all y'know!

user64323 · 04/10/2021 20:11

I'm actually surprised that most people wait until their kids clothes are too small before buying bigger! Once they go into a bigger size I generally start to buy the next size. When I'm browsing sales I am usually looking for the next size up. Mine have all pretty much matched age labels, so do go into new around their birthday. For my summer borns this works well, it means that are new into a size for starting school in September. I struggled with my winter born starting school this year as 4-5 won't last long but 5-6 is too big.

Changechangychange · 04/10/2021 20:12

@Pinkflipflop85

When they need them...

If I paid attention to the age on the labels and waited until they reached that age then my very tall children would look a bit ridiculous!

My skinny short-arse wouldn’t be able to keep his trousers up! He’s 4.5, still fits in some age 2-3 tops. And we have a Frugi jumper that claims it is age 12-18months! (Frugi sizes are weird though).
