Would you cook and eat out of date chicken

Bought all ingredients to make a curry, thought I had chicken, but it went out of date yesterday.

Would you still cook it in the curry and eat.

I'd nip back to shop but it will be a hassle, I have 2 young dc, DH has the car and it's raining.

If it’s ok then yes.

Winterfellismyhome · 04/10/2021 09:51

Nope

vampirethriller · 04/10/2021 09:51

I would yes, one day makes no difference if it's been stored properly

No

Notaroadrunner · 04/10/2021 09:53

I wouldn't. You'll know as soon as you open it if it's going off.

Dreamstate · 04/10/2021 09:54

Never, not worth getting ill over

Smartiepants79 · 04/10/2021 09:54

Open it, smell it. And then make a decision. I have to say I am quite lax about dates on food and happily eat many things days out of date BUT I’m very wary when it comes to poultry.

BuffyFairy · 04/10/2021 09:55

Yes as long as it’s been stored properly and looks and smells ok. Any doubt bin it. Use by dates are a safety guide to be used in conjunction with common sense.

Same. I'm fairly lax, but poultry and fish are not something to take chances on.
H8H8H8 · 04/10/2021 09:56

1 day out of date? I would absolutely eat that.

Anon778833 · 04/10/2021 09:58

No, not chicken I wouldn't. Chicken is THE most dodgy meat to take chances with.

Someone I know had campylobacter poisoning recently - it's vile.

Maroon85 · 04/10/2021 10:00

1 day? Yes as long as it smelled and looked ok. Any longer than 1 day I'd chuck it regardless

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 04/10/2021 10:02

Usually I would cook and eat. I'd go by the smell.

The last time I opened a pack and was like hmmm maybe this is off. I thought surely it's ok, it's just one day, but when I put it on the roasting dish on top of all my veg and stuff it absolutely stunk. Went ahead and cooked it and even the smell from the oven was horrible. Had a bite and it just tasted wrong.

So if in doubt, bin it! But I think if it isn't smelly or gooey then you're all good

Duploisthebest · 04/10/2021 10:03

Yes I would as long as it smelt okay and would just make sure it was very well cooked!

NeedNewGlasses · 04/10/2021 11:30

I opened chicken on Saturday, are some and intended to eat the rest yesterday. I didn't so I'm planning on having it today. Went out of date yesterday.

Smells fine.

I've previously bought chicken that was off before the use by date so i tend to use common sense.

PeonyTime · 04/10/2021 11:35

If it smells and looks fine, yes.
Likewise, if it smelt dodgy, but was in date for the next 3 days, I'd bin it.

Ellarain · 04/10/2021 11:38

No definately not chicken.

Ogwen · 04/10/2021 11:44

Not a chance. I’ve had campylobacter.

Nap1983 · 04/10/2021 11:44

Yes I definitely would, if it’s been refrigerated and doesn’t smell or look funny. I’d also Chuck in date stuff that looked dodgy

Mickarooni · 04/10/2021 11:45

Mmmm maybe if it looks and smells ok. Make sure it’s absolutely fully cooked. I’m a bit weird about out of date chicken though.

Ariela · 04/10/2021 11:46

I would open and smell carefully. if it smells OK and I'm cookign at sufficiently high temperature then it'll be fine. If it's 1 day out of date, what's the difference between cooking at midnight and cooking 12 hours later, it doesn't suddenly 'go off' , there has to be a built in margin so that people could open and cook at midnight.

SheWoreYellow · 04/10/2021 11:46

I’ve had chicken well within date that was off. You need to smell it really to tell if it’s ok, not just look at the date. I’d do that and see.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 04/10/2021 11:47

I always go off the look and smell. I’ve had chicken that was ‘in date’ and had clearly gone. With chicken and fish, if there’s any doubt when I smell it, then it’s a no.

Purplewithred · 04/10/2021 11:47

Without a moment’s hesitation, unless it was obviously off. Use by dates for many foods are ridiculously conservative.

I thank my lucky stars I was born early enough to have had to learn how to assess foods without the ‘help’ of use by and best before dates.
