I’ve recently started listening to podcasts, I’m aware I’m late to the party.

I listen to sport ones with my son so I’m looking for things just for me, I like history, crime, maybe something a bit out there( I go down wiki rabbit holes regularly, things like remote islands and their way of life)

Ive started a cpl and find they’re not for me so personal recommendations would be fab

The Washington Post did a series on all the US presidents called ‘Presidential’ and another one on the space race called ‘Moonrise’. There is even a way to play them from first to last.
I also quite like ‘Freakonomics’ and the related ‘No Stupid Questions’.

NoSquirrels · 03/10/2021 18:04

If you haven’t listened to Serial, start there.

Thecatisboss · 03/10/2021 18:05

I like "You're dead to me" history podcasts but very funny as well.

This American Life
It’s 2 or 3 things every week on relatively random topics
But always very informative, interesting and funny

It’s the team behind the Serial podcast which is also worth listening to
And Shit town, which is also excellent

Iliketeaagain · 03/10/2021 18:24

I like RedHanded and Women and crime for real-life crime podcasts.

Ear Hustle - it’s made in san Quentin prison. It’s really really interesting

I love This American Life too

There are loads of good ones on BBC Sounds too

StrongArm · 03/10/2021 18:40

We Crashed (about the people who founded We Work and what went wrong) is v good. Had me laughing out loud at points.

The Missing Cryptoqueen (a BBC podcast) is also interesting

Some of the Grounded with Louis Theroux are worth listening to if there's someone he's interviewed that you like

StrongArm · 03/10/2021 18:45

Ah cross post with @Cherryana on the missing cryptoqueen!

The Failing Writers Podcast is good. Fun, funny and you really don't have to be a wannabe writer to enjoy it. They have interesting guests on too.

Just looked at the list and the other one I enjoyed is 'Who The Hell Is Hamish' (an Australian true story about a conman)

TheWeeDonkey · 03/10/2021 19:10

I like Redhanded and Lets Go To Court, Real Crime Profile is good, a bit more serious and indepth.

I enjoyed Welcome to Your Fantasy and the Chippendales very eye opening.

The Drop Out is good and Chasing Bill Cosby although that one is a tough listen.

I quite like Blocked and Reported to, that can be quite entertaining.

MissKeithsNeice · 03/10/2021 19:18

99% invisible for randomness. Its just awesome. Its about how everyday things, design and infrastructure affect our day to day lives. Great example of journalism as story telling. So informative, beautifully written and presenter had incredible voice. Highly recommend.

My face history is an American show called This Day is Esoteric Political History. Terrible title, I know. It takes one small thing in each 15m episode- and in the story telling it really opens you up to so much about the period.

If you go doen rabbit holes, you may be interested in the New York Times series called Rabbit Hole. Its explores the rise of You Tube and its impact on radicalisation.

Others have recommended Serial. You really can't go wrong with that - its so good. Most other true crime feels a bit off to me- hard to get the tone right.

kt12mum · 03/10/2021 19:29

How did we get here - each one is a therapy session with someone, very interesting to hear the route the therapist takes and each one has a moment where something clicks for the patient

Parenting hell - funny parenting one

Help I sexted my boss - funny one with two friends discussing listener questions, one v northern and one v posh but they're friends so makes it funny

Shagged married annoyed is funny too

modge · 03/10/2021 19:35

West Cork is also a great true crime one along the lines/quality of Serial.

David Tennant Does a Podcast With has some good interviews. Mainly with other actors but also with Gordon Brown and a couple of other political ones (he's no Paxman but they are quite human and interesting)

notacooldad · 03/10/2021 19:53

Probably cross post by the time Ive typed this.
Crime whole case series:
Hunting Warhead. Dark subject but incredible how the perpetrators were tracked down on the deep web.

Booby Trap The Miami Chronicles. The true story of a boy scout killed by his scout master. Initially it appears to be accidental but there is a lot more to the story.

The Nobody Zone.
A homeless Irish man seems to kill multiple times and no one seems to know or care.

Single episodes
Military murders. The host Margo is great but a bit manic in her delivery at times. I love it though.

Swindled. Always starts with a prequel before the main story. 'A concerned citizen ' is the host and has a deadpan delivery.

UK crime.
I like UK true crime. Adam, the host, is rather Alan Partridge but always has a 'guess the year' to put the crime into context. They are short episodes.

Darkchocolateandcoffee · 03/10/2021 19:55

If you like history you'll love Neil Oliver's Love Letter to Great Britain

Digestive28 · 03/10/2021 20:02

Wear Cork for crime. Very gripping.
