Choosing anywhere to rent in the U.K. cheaply

My friend is single and needs to move out of an unsupportive family environment. Where in the U.K. would you recommend someone move to if they weren’t tied down by work/friends/family and would be as cheap as possible, but within an hour of a major hospital? Also some public transport.

Watching with interest as I entertain this idea a lot.

Yorkshire? Somewhere like Halifax. Not the most picturesque, but it has a hospital, good bus service, good train links to Manchester, Leeds and London, and a reasonable range of shops.

North East, on the Tyne and Wear metro line.

MakingM · 02/10/2021 19:34

Newcastle. Gateshead.

Blackpool has a hospital and it's cheap.

Thanks for the suggestions, they’re really helpful

Hull! Major trauma centre, specialist cancer unit, two hospitals, could cycle to both from most areas of the city. Rents cheap. It’s my lovely home town.

Liverpool - huge hospital, good transport options, low rents outside the city centre. Also awesome city.

FancyLampshade · 02/10/2021 20:47

Liverpool, Leeds.

Liverpool's a bit cosier and friendlier of the two, more village-like, and very down to earth, so I reckon it might be a good one for your friend if she/he is coming out of a stressful environment and feeling a bit delicate.

Northern Ireland.

South Yorkshire is cheap. Sheffield has a couple of big teaching hospitals, all fairly friendly places, peak district nearby etc.

Nottingham. I was there as a rudely. Great city. 2 big hospitals. Easy to get to Derby and beautiful Lincoln as well. Smile

I don’t know where rudely came from. 😂

MadMadMadamMim · 02/10/2021 20:55

Sheffield. Nice city, lots of green space.

Snoods · 02/10/2021 20:59

South Yorkshire. Has a few big hospitals. Some lovely countryside. A few medium sized towns (for work and social)

Standrewsschool · 02/10/2021 21:00

Medway - Medway hospital or Maidstone hospital

username00 · 02/10/2021 21:01

Glasgow

Elmo230885 · 02/10/2021 21:11

Doncaster. There is a large hospital but I don't know if it counts as a major hospital but Doncaster has fantastic travel links to many other places such as Sheffield, Hull and Leeds.

Blueeyedgirl21 · 02/10/2021 21:56

Is the hospital for work purposes ?

Blueeyedgirl21 · 02/10/2021 22:04

I’d go up to lancashire - rossendale area like Crawshawbooth, Haslingden or Accrington (hear me out lol) - you have beautiful countryside on your doorstep, people are friendly, it’s fairly diverse, near Naice places like Clitheroe and Hebden Bridge and Ribble Valley villages (posh) for days out, can be in Bury, Bolton quickly for shopping and hospitals and in Manchester within an hour in the train for a fiver. You can live quite an outdoorsy lifestyle if you can manage the fairly bleak terraced streets and there is a bit of poverty around but you can rent a two bed terrace done to a nice standard for about £450 a month, there’s tons of shopping options (Lidls and aldi everywhere) and community projects to get involved with.

FriendshipHelp · 02/10/2021 22:08

@Blueeyedgirl21 no not for work but for ongoing health care

Middlesbrough.

ISpyCobraKai · 02/10/2021 22:21

Dd rents a two bed for £450 pcm in Glasgow.
It's not a good area, though where she is, is fine.

FourLaneEnds · 02/10/2021 22:39

Stockton and the villages around. In fact one of my DC's has bought a terraced house and the mortgage is less than £200 per month.
