Choosing anywhere to rent in the U.K. cheaply

My friend is single and needs to move out of an unsupportive family environment. Where in the U.K. would you recommend someone move to if they weren’t tied down by work/friends/family and would be as cheap as possible, but within an hour of a major hospital? Also some public transport.

South Wales

Liverpool is not cheap. Not as expensive as London & SE but definitely not cheap.

Hawkmoth · 02/10/2021 23:42

Fraserburgh.

Although Medway is cheap I wouldnt want on going care at Medway hospital. It's got a long history of failings. It's a slap in the face when you have used other hospitals in the SE

Hullbilly · 03/10/2021 00:31

Telford or Shrewsbury?

tigerbear · 03/10/2021 00:43

Newcastle, definitely

PutYourBackIntoit · 03/10/2021 00:47

Forest of Dean, for Gloucester Royal if your friend likes the idea of rural living.

Holy Moly, I'll go halves on this with your friend OP.

It’s likely that poor public transport will be reflected in the price, so worth checking out the transport links carefully if seeing somewhere really cheap.

Liverpool is extremely cheap, including compared to nearby cities such as Manchester. Certain you can find expensive parts too if you look, however there are areas where it’s very cheap to rent (or buy) and live.

Carlisle. Great size city, M6 motorway right past city. Easy access to the Lake Distict 45min, Newcastle 1hr, Glasgow 1.5hr, Edinburgh 1.5hr and Manchester 2hr.
West Coast mainline. London 3.5hr - Glasgow 1.5hrs.
Lovely green areas within walking distance of city. Rickerby Park, Eden Valley.
Lovely suburbs within walking distance of city centre.

My parents rent out a few flats in Fleetwood, it’s so cheap £350pcm for a two bed flat and have a house they rent in Blackpool £455 for a three bed huge garden. There are lots cheaper but I wouldn’t want to stay in them. I was shocked at how cheap prices are on the North west coast.

Public transport is great where Dd lives, it's v near to the center of Glasgow, and their Uber Eats is amazing!
It's the wrong hospital for me if I need A&E or I'd look there in a heartbeat.
Traditionally, 'bad', areas have good bits, which is what she has.

BrilliantBetty · 04/10/2021 18:08

Liverpool or near to Liverpool.

Newcastle.

Someone I know has moved to Cardiff from London and really likes it there. The property she bought was cheap (for want of a much better word).

Squirrelblanket · 04/10/2021 18:43

Hull and surrounding areas.

AliceMcK · 04/10/2021 18:51

Definitely north. Someone said blackpool which has good surrounding areas. Both Blackpool and Preston have good hospitals and share some care. I’d personally avoid living right in preston or blackpool thoug, look around the surrounding suburbs or smaller towns between the 2, you usually get given the option of which hospital you prefer then. All the Fylde coast is nice and there is good health care from GPs in those areas and a decent networks of health providers as well as nice fresh air and friendly areas to live.

No have you seen the film Deliverance!
FranklySonImTheGaffer · 04/10/2021 19:05

South Wales. There are a few hospitals around, some more A&E focused, others more geared towards outpatients but there are plenty of places near enough to all of them that could be rented cheaply.

Near the new hospital in Cwmbran for instance, you could live 30 minutes away for £400pcm, sometimes less depending on how picky you are and what size house / flat you need.

PutYourBackIntoit · 04/10/2021 20:55

@Slatkater no I haven't. Is it set in FOD?
