Flu Jab?

FanGirlX · 02/10/2021 14:50

I'm early 40s, no underlying conditions. Wondering about getting the flu jab this year. I'd have to pay for it but understand it's only about £10.

Reason being, I'm reading articles saying that we are expecting a particularly virulent strain of flu this year that we don't have any immunity to due to social distancing / lockdowns.

I've never had a flu jab before. Anyone else thinking of having it?

I had mine yesterday at a local Boots, get it for free due to heart issues, this is the first time it's made me feel ill, woke this morning aching all over. I'd say go for it if you can, DH has been ill for weeks, thankfully, I've not caught it, and it wasn't Covid, he had a PCR and a second one as he had to travel for work and needed to buy a day two test. Am trying to persuade him to go get the flu jab.

ActonBell · 02/10/2021 15:00

Definitely get it if you can afford it. The fewer people with flu who need help from the NHS this year the better.
Worst case scenario you’ve spent a few quid on something that you didn’t need (which many of us do all the time). Best case scenario you protect yourself and others from a period of being really unwell this winter.
I had my first jab when pregnant with DS1. I’m pregnant again and got mine today. I’ve had it every winter since DS was born and paid for it. Seems well worth it to me.

I have it every year. A sore arm for a day is much nicer than the flu, even if you're otherwise healthy.

I had flu 4 years ago.

In bed for 3 weeks. Really ill. Completely lost my hearing for several weeks. Now wear hearing aids.

It was hideous.

Had the flu jab ever since. I never want to go through that again. People think it's a bad cold. It's not.

starfish4 · 02/10/2021 15:06

I had mine in the week (with no side effects).

emmathedilemma · 02/10/2021 15:13

I have it every year as I’m asthmatic. Apart from a sore arm for a couple of days it’s never given me any side effects and much better than having flu!!

BetterthanIthink · 02/10/2021 15:16

I had the flu 4 years ago , never felt so ill . Was in bed for 2 weeks then got a chest infection. Took about a month to fully recover .
Paid for the flu jab ever since.
Had mine 2 weeks ago , slightly sore arm the next day with body aches and tiredness. Took some paracetamol and carried on working.
It’s a no brainer for me .

Billandben444 · 02/10/2021 15:17

Had mine 2 weeks ago for the first time - slightly sore arm next day. Expecting covid booster next month and didn't like the idea of having to have both jabs at the same time as it seems like overload. Decided to have it anyway because it now seems silly to refuse something that might protect me.

Flickeringgreenlight · 02/10/2021 15:23

I've had mine a couple of weeks ago. I am dreading this winter and want to be protected, I think it's better to be safe. I've also had it the past two year as well and I must say the side effects this year were by far the worst, not sure why but I was achy and wiped out. Still no regrets, I was fine in 48 hours and fingers crossed it helps protect me and my family.

TankGirl97 · 02/10/2021 15:27

Yes, same age and I have the flu jab every year (pay at the local pharmacy). I don't want the flu!

EnidFrighten · 02/10/2021 15:29

I'm similar circumstances to you and had it for a tenner. No side effects.

I don't fancy having the feeling of another pandemic coming for me, and if rates start going up it might be harder to have a jab later on!

FizzyPink · 02/10/2021 15:30

I had the flu years ago and it was horrific so always get the flu jab now.

Never had any side effects at all until this year. Had it Wednesday evening and was feeling terrible all day Thursday. Totally fine by Friday though

bungabungaboo · 02/10/2021 15:55

My dd and I had it lat Saturday, I am 49 she is 16, felt ok 😊

Last year, when I had it, I had the sweats 🤷‍♀️

loobylou44 · 02/10/2021 16:04

I had mine yesterday. Had hot sweats and a low level headache all night but am fine now. First time I've had it and I paid £14.99 at the local Lloyds pharmacy.

FanGirlX · 02/10/2021 16:08

Ok, so I just book at a local pharmacy?

bungabungaboo · 02/10/2021 16:11

Boots for me

But I think Tesco do it!

ofwarren · 02/10/2021 16:18

I had mine 2 days ago. No side effects.
I had flu 3 years ago and could get out of bed for 2 weeks and ended up with pneumonia so I was ill for over a month.
My middle child was hospital.

ofwarren · 02/10/2021 16:19

Yes, just ring your local pharmacy and they should book you in or tell you if they do a drop in.

SecretKeeper1 · 02/10/2021 16:48

Yes, I am having it this year, for the first time. I have heard hospitals are prepping for an influx of non-covid respiratory illnesses over winter, as our natural immunity to colds/flu is not as robust as usual. £8 Asda pharmacy.

FOJN · 02/10/2021 16:52

Mines booked for next week. I booked as soon as they were available and found out the timing of my birthday means I qualify for an NHS flu jab.

DotsandCo · 02/10/2021 17:10

Had mine this morning (I'm asthmatic so get it every year). I'd have it regardless though this year.

MrsLCSofLichfield · 02/10/2021 17:21

I have never had one before but have booked and paid for one this year. I had COVID in spring 2020 and it was fucking awful, also have a few memories of horrible gastric flu at age 7, don't want anything like these again.

Fluffycloudland77 · 02/10/2021 17:46

I’ve been having it for years, I’m 44. I’ve never even noticed any side effects.

bloodywhitecat · 02/10/2021 18:32

Had mine today as I am over 50 and asthmatic. I used to not bother with it but then DH developed cancer so now I have it more to try to protect him than for me, I have had full blown flu once and it wasn't pleasant. I had it last year too just before DH started chemo, no side effects except for a sore arm.

JacquelineCarlyle · 02/10/2021 18:34

@Fluffycloudland77

I’ve been having it for years, I’m 44. I’ve never even noticed any side effects.
I'm exactly the same. Got mine earlier in the week - £14.99 at Lloyd's pharmacy.
