Flu Jab?

I'm early 40s, no underlying conditions. Wondering about getting the flu jab this year. I'd have to pay for it but understand it's only about £10.

Reason being, I'm reading articles saying that we are expecting a particularly virulent strain of flu this year that we don't have any immunity to due to social distancing / lockdowns.

I've never had a flu jab before. Anyone else thinking of having it?

I always pay for it after a run of having flu a few years in a row where I actually felt I was dying (and I have had an actual life threatening illness to compare it with!) . Had mine yesterday .

DD has also had her child one via GP so very thankful.

I was invited for my first ever flu jab recently. I did some research as I was worried about already having had 2 covid jabs and likely a booster all in the same year. I decided to have the flu jab. My thinking being if I got flu, unlikely but possible, I wanted my lungs to be in the best possible health in case I got covid.
I had the flu jab Thursday. No side effects.

I have it every year. Work organise it for me, and I'm keen because like PPs I've had flu and it was HORRIFIC.

It's a no brainer for me.

Having mine in a couple of weeks at a Lloyds Pharmacy. Used to get them free at the docs but last year I seem to have fallen off their list.
I’ve had a couple of really nasty flu bouts over the years (like fine one minute, over 40 temp & hallucinating the next) so I always try to get the jab!

Husband & daughter had their free (asthma) jabs yesterday at our Practice flu clinic, there was much wandering around in Dressing Gowns of Doom last night & moaning about sore arms, but they’re fine today!

Im healthy and take the flu jab. I had the flu 4 years ago and it killed me, took me months to get over it.

Never again im going through that

When is flu season? Earliest app I can get is 1/11. How long does it take for the jab to be effective?

OP posts:
FanGirlX · 04/10/2021 17:42

So flu season is Dec to March, although it can start earlier and finish later.

OP posts:
FanGirlX · 04/10/2021 17:43

It takes 10-14 days for the jab to be effective. So I'm covered from the 14th Nov 😁

I went to a talk by a public health person a couple of weeks ago. He said we are in for a tough winter with flu, Covid and RSV likely to be circulating all at the same time. So a lot of people are likely to be ill. Very sensible to get vaccinated.

I get the flu jab every year and get no more than a sore arm, if that.
I’ve heard people say they don’t want flu vaccine because they were ill when they had it before. Side effects from the jab are not the same as illness, they’re an unpleasant effect that you can get if you’re unlucky, but it’s not the same as having an infection with all the risks of that. And you can’t infect other people with your side effects, but you can pass on your flu infection.

Yubaba · 04/10/2021 17:54

Officially flu season is September to April.
The jab takes about 2 weeks to give you full immunity.

FanGirlX · 05/10/2021 13:12

I think I'll carry on wearing my mask in busy, indoor places until I'm jabbed.

If you can't find any appointments to book online then try your local / independent pharmacy. I've been through Boots etc websites for the last couple of weeks and there were no appointments anywhere in the city. Rang my local pharmacy that doesn't have online booking this morning and she said they had someone in today and to just call in. Jabbed at lunchtime and for free because they're linked to the NHS system :)

Duckswaddle · 05/10/2021 14:20

I had mine last week at work (NHS). Bit of a sore arm but no other effects.

RubyFakeLips · 05/10/2021 14:24

You can book it on Boots online, I think Superdrug too. I have mine every year as use public transport a lot and had proper flu once, never again, was awful.
