What tog duvet for winter

StrawberrySanta · 30/09/2021 19:31

I need a new duvet, currently using a thin summer one. Is 10.5 enough? Tesco do one called Forever Full which sounds appealing. I've seen they go up to 15 tog, is that too warm though?

It depends on your house really. Old house tog 15 plus a blanket and a quilted throw. We were always cold there, if the heating was off for 5 mins the house plunged in temperature no matter what we did re double glazing & insulation.

This house we have tog 10.5 on in winter, well all year round really. Occasionally have a blanket on top if it gets chilly. It just a much warmer house.

TheSpottedZebra · 30/09/2021 19:35

Surely it depends!

How hot you run, how hot is your house, do you have heating on at night, window open, hot flushes? Do you sleep alone, with pets...

MinaPop · 30/09/2021 19:37

Depends completely on personal choice, whether you add other heating items to your bed (hot water bottle/extra blanket/pyjamas/husband) and how hot your room is.
We have a 10.5 which we use most of the year except on hit summer nights when we switch to thin blankets. We keep the bedroom cool as we are both hot people. Mostly I wake up half out the duvet as I'm too hot.
Someone else in my exact same bed might feel freezing cold!
Not very helpful, sorry...

Should add that when I slept on my own I had the same tog duvet, but added hot water bottle and pyjamas in winter ☺️

dementedpixie · 30/09/2021 19:40

I'm in Scotland and we only go up to 10.5 tog. My mum likes it warmer and has 13.5tog I think

Flufferty · 30/09/2021 19:41

Mine's 13.5 tog. I doubt if 10.5 would be warm enough for winter

BakewellTarter · 30/09/2021 19:43

9 tog max here, hate being hot. House is about thirty years old, always have the window open a bit too.

romany4 · 30/09/2021 19:50

I'm in West Yorkshire
I got a 16 tog from Amazon.
It's bloody lovely!

kowari · 30/09/2021 19:55

I have a 7 tog for winter with a weighted blanket on top. That way I can fold the blanket down if I get too warm. 4 tog and just added the blanket at the moment, usually switch and put heating on around the time the clocks change. Heating set to 17 in the evening and an hour in the morning, off overnight, fairly well insulated new build.

Autumngoldleaf · 30/09/2021 19:57

Soak and sleep, beautiful goose down... 9.5 tog so warm light and fluffy.

pussycatlickinglollyices · 30/09/2021 20:46

DH currently uses a 10.5 with a 4.5 on top and is "snug"
I roll up the 10.5 between us like a swiss roll and just have the 4.5
at some point I will need a bit more warmth, but by then DH will have moved on to the 13.5 🤷‍♀️
He's always cold. I'm always way too hot.

If you leave a window open you will need a little more toggage. If you leave the heating on overnight when it's really cold, you will need less toggage.

What do you have now? Are you comfy/snug/bit warm/boiling?

StrawberrySanta · 30/09/2021 20:59

We had a 10.5 tog in the past (had to bin it due to baby sick) we have a 4tog currently for summer. I like to keep the bedroom window open in winter sometimes to stop the windows condensation, but shut it if it's especially cold. We don't have heating on overnight but have two kids under 3 so don't let the house get too cold. I sleep next to DH. No pets to snuggle in with. Think that's all the questions answered!
It sounds like 10.5 or 13 would be good. Oh we have an electric blanket too

1930s house, in Yorkshire, if that makes a difference!

4.5 tog all year round - 80s house. I'm 53 though so overheat!

How warm is your house at night?
Our last house got really really cold at night. Single digits
But that was ok with me. I was always warm at night. Sometimes I would use 15 tog though.
But most houses I reckon wouldn't need 15 tog cos it is very warm

StrawberrySanta · 30/09/2021 21:07

In January when I had DC2 my mum stayed over (it was a sudden waters breaking in the middle of the night thing) so she came over during the night to be here for DC1, anyway she slept in our bed and mentioned that the duvet felt thin. Are there different thicknesses between say 2 different brands of 10.5 tog duv?

If you wear a decent pair of PJs and some bedsocks, 10.5 might be enough. I think 13.5 would be better.
If it gets really properly cold in Yorkshire you can always chuck the 4.5 over the top and that gives you a grand total toggage of 18!!!
Scott of the Antarctic might get a sweat on with that 🥵😂

Doesn't get too cold overnight, I set the downstairs thermostat to 17 I think

We've got a 4.5 tog that clips to a 9 tog 😊

StrawberrySanta · 30/09/2021 21:14

Chucking a second duvet over the top is actually genius! I'll have the 4 tog in the wardrobe so that could be duvet #2

OP posts:
pussycatlickinglollyices · 30/09/2021 21:15

Have you "plumped" it? or did you just stuff it in straight out of the wrapper (assuming it's not a feather one)
I plumped one - you work down the channels, grab a hand full on top and one underneath, and pull slightly to separate the fibres in the duvet. Work across and down until it's all done. It makes the duvet a lot deeper/fatter iyswim.

itsgettingwierd · 30/09/2021 21:16

I have 10.5 all year round.

Summer it gets rolled to end and sometimes use just a sheet or nothing.

Winter I add a throw and/or my electric heated throw!!!

I don't have heating on overnight as ds gets too hot and has his radiator switched off and seems daft heating whole house for just my room!

Thermostat just always on 19°c so it's warm enough and we layer up if needed.

purpleme12 · 30/09/2021 21:19

If your house is just 17 degrees then I think 10.5 will be fine!

yikesanotherbooboo · 30/09/2021 21:22

10.5 , south east, no heating and window open. If it is very cold I add sleeves to my top and a blanket.
