Where is heating oil used?

Stupid question but I keep seeing people talking on MN about heating oil and I've never know anyone who has this system. Is it mainly in rural areas? Also how long does a tank last you? Is this system more expensive?

usually in remote areas where there is no mains gas, it costs a bomb to be connected to the mains if you are remote

Twilightstarbright · 30/09/2021 11:58

Almost everyone in Guernsey would have an oil tank on the property for heating oil, or electric for heating. Gas was very rare and there wasn’t any mains gas like in the UK.

weebarra · 30/09/2021 11:59

My pils live in a small village in the highlands and they use it.

DrHildegardeLanstrom · 30/09/2021 12:00

MIL in quite a large northern Irish town has it.

LowbrowVictoriana · 30/09/2021 12:00

I'm in rural Wales and have an oil boiler.

LowbrowVictoriana · 30/09/2021 12:01

Meant to add: there is no mains gas here; it's not an option.

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/09/2021 12:01

Patents had a cottage in Devon with no mains services, other than electric lights.

Bramshott · 30/09/2021 12:02

Most rural areas are not on the mains gas network (nor mains sewage either). We're in Hampshire, about 50 miles from London, and 8 miles from Basingstoke, so not what I'd class as remote, but as we're in a small village rather than a town we don't have mains gas.

EmmaStone · 30/09/2021 12:03

Yup, rural here. When we moved I enquired about getting the village connected to the mains gas (which is about 100m away). It would cost £345k, so I said we'd think about it lol!

snowballer · 30/09/2021 12:04

No mains gas in village here, so everyone is on either oil or bottled gas. SE, commuterville and 45 mins from London

bloodywhitecat · 30/09/2021 12:04

We have no gas supply within miles of us so we rely on heating oil for our central heating, we don't have mains sewage either. We are rural but not remote in deepest, darkest Suffolk.

CorpusCallosum · 30/09/2021 12:04

North Yorks. Not that rural but still no gas.

Mollymalone123 · 30/09/2021 12:06

North Devon here and no gas so either wood burners-oil radiators or electric heating.

Gizlotsmum · 30/09/2021 12:06

Semi rural lincs and on oil here. If I fill the tank (1200) litres it will last a year. Currently on 4 bars and hopeful it will last till Jan but depends on use (use for hot water and heating) also have a log burner and immersion heater if we do run out. Try to buy when cheap but not always an option

Seainasive · 30/09/2021 12:07

And yes it is more expensive!

Equimum · 30/09/2021 12:10

Mostly rural areas. My son's school, is a village, about 30 miles from London is oil heated.

TheDogsMother · 30/09/2021 12:12

About 50 miles from London in a very small village in West Sussex. The whole village is on either oil or in our case LPG.

Meceme · 30/09/2021 12:14

Rural North Yorkshire . No mains gas in the village.Usually need 2or 3 loads of 1000 litres throughout the year. This can cost anything depending on the price per litre which rises and falls with the international oil price. I have paid between £200 -£600 per load over the last 20 years. You need to keep an eye on prices and try to fill the tank when the price is low but, if you run low/out you have to pay what ever the current price is.

ChristmasCrafter · 30/09/2021 12:15

We have oil and live rurally. We have no mains services apart from electric. We have a borehole for water and a septic tank for sewage too.

ApolloandDaphne · 30/09/2021 12:15

I used it in a rural area of Fife in Scotland.

SuperheroBirds · 30/09/2021 12:17

I live just outside a small village in North Yorkshire. There’s no mains gas out to where I live, so we have oil heating. We have to fill up twice a year.

Reallybadidea · 30/09/2021 12:19

There isn't a huge amount of difference in cost between oil and gas these days energysavingtrust.org.uk/about-us/our-data/ but you also have to factor in the replacement costs of oil tanks and oil boilers are a bit more expensive than the gas equivalent I think.

Where it is really difficult if you're on a low income is that there is a big outlay every time you need to fill your tank and it is also generally more expensive per litre to order a small quantity, with a minimum delivery of 500 litres. At least with gas you can pay by direct debit to split the cost. Some companies do allow you to do this with oil, but they generally charge a premium for doing this and it also makes it more difficult to shop around for the best deal.

romdowa · 30/09/2021 12:19

In the Republic of Ireland its very common. Its rare to have gas heating over here. I wouldn't know anyone with it.

daisypond · 30/09/2021 12:22

My parents’ house on the outskirts of a small town in North Yorkshire. As the town expanded, they were eventually connected to gas. Happened about 20 years ago, I think.
