Where is heating oil used?

Stupid question but I keep seeing people talking on MN about heating oil and I've never know anyone who has this system. Is it mainly in rural areas? Also how long does a tank last you? Is this system more expensive?

I love in a medium size village about 20minites drive from a big city in Wiltshire and we have no gas connection so have an oil boiler.
Ours is old and probably not very efficient. A full tank 1100l would probably cost us circa £500-£600 at the moment? We are still getting to know how much we use as just coming up to the year point, but for the last year I think we've used probably just over 2 tanks?

IHateWasps · 30/09/2021 13:09

Thanks all. It's interesting to see how common it is. And I'm not surprised if they want £345k to cnnect to the gas supply!

Most of Jersey uses oil heating

Keladrythesaviour · 30/09/2021 13:13

@AlitheAllosaurus

Rural village in mid Wales no mains gas in the village or surrounding area! We fill the tank a couple of times a year, absolute nightmare when you forget to check it and run out!
We've got a sensor we bought off Amazon! It sends us an alert once we get to a certain level and also over time tracks your useage etc to give you a record of how you use your oil. We actually bought it because of oil thefts in then local area - it will tell us we suddenly drop a lot of oil.

I live 500 yards from a gas main in a semi-rural area of the south east. But because it would cost a fortune to get it extended (house was built in the early 1900s) we have an oil tank.

Caspianberg · 30/09/2021 13:23

We aren’t in the uk. Mains gas isn’t really used here at all.
Cities now run of communal high pressure hot water pumped though pipes laid in road ( heated in plant burning waste wood)
Rural or those not changed are generally on oil.

We still have oil. 4000l tanks that get filled every year, we use 3000-3500l each winter usually. Fairly large old house. Costs a small fortune.

Oil heating is basically being shut down though here. And lots of subsidies over the next few years to change. We are getting a heat pump installed

I did not realise oil heating was so common still .
So many questions Confused
Are your tanks above or below ground
How long does it take to sort out a delivery ?
How long does it take to fill a tank
( relative to it's size)
Do you have to be in when the oil is delivered
Can nighbours club together and get a discount
Is theft a issue

Am am just curious really nosy

Our tank is in the garage because it’s an older one but you aren’t allowed them in doors anymore. Can usually get a delivery within 2-3 days if urgent. 2-3 weeks for cheapest option. No you don’t have to be in. Just need access to your tank which for lost people is outside. Yes we have consortium groups where neighbours can order at the same time to get a discount. Theft has been an issue before here and you can buy alarms for your tank.
NautaOcts · 30/09/2021 13:37

Yes on edge of a village here, no gas connection.
It’s ok but obviously you’re at the mercy of oil prices fluctuating.
We fill up every 2-3 months.

RB68 · 30/09/2021 13:39

Quite alot around in warwickshire - our neighbours are either lpg or oil and one has a wood chip boiler. No mains gas and no chance of it either. We are around 5 miles outside of warwick so not massively remote or anything just no gas out to us

RB68 · 30/09/2021 13:41

we are lpg but similar system to oil. Ous is automated telemetry sytem so when it gets low it tells the supplier that come and fill up - takes about 20 mins max and we get refills 2 to 3 times a yr. Ours just does central heating

Soubriquet · 30/09/2021 13:41

We use heating oil

Costs us about £50 a month depending on how careful we are with it.

SparkyBlue · 30/09/2021 13:41

@romdowa do you live rurally. Almost every household I know has gas apart from people living in the countryside.

Chasingsquirrels · 30/09/2021 13:42

Rural/commuter village about 10 miles from Cambridge.
Although we have a village community heating scheme (large scale ground source) in the pipeline.

Caspianberg · 30/09/2021 13:44

Ours is in above ground cellar ( house built into hill) . Standard around here.

Oil delivery is fast as it can be -20. Usually if I call in the morning it’s full that afternoon

We try and just do one order in summer to last whole winter which usually does as have large tanks.

A 4000l delivery takes about 45mins- 1hr to fill. We don’t have to be home for delivery as it can be filed from outside.

NautaOcts · 30/09/2021 13:46

This is our tank for anyone that is interested…

Where is heating oil used?
Didiplanthis · 30/09/2021 13:46

Rural Sussex 50 miles from London. No mains gas in my surrounding area, no connection to sewer system either. Electricity but frequent big power cuts as standard !!

Caspianberg · 30/09/2021 13:47

4000l oil at the moment is around €3400. It’s increase around 20% since the summer when we filled up luckily. Buts it’s almost double what oil cost around 5 years ago

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 30/09/2021 13:53

We're in a small group of 7 houses. The rest of the (large) village is just up the road. We were told this year when we moved in it would be £50k per house to be attached to the mains gas.

Our neighbours are mainly on oil, we're on LPG and one of the houses has a ground source heat pump.

GingerFigs · 30/09/2021 13:59

Scotland. Lots of places. I am rural south west Scotland and there is no mains gas so it's either domestic heating oil or bottled gas.

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 30/09/2021 14:00

Suffolk here and on heating oil. We previously lived in Norfolk and had heating oil there too. It's fairly common in most rural areas or bottled gas. We rely on wood burners this time of year to try and make the oil last a bit longer. Heating will be switched on when it's really cold. Our hot water is oil fired too.

Returnoftheowl · 30/09/2021 14:10

We're in Norfolk and oil tanks are very common here (bit ironic considering the gas coming in off the Norfolk coast pipelines!)

ducksalive · 30/09/2021 14:18

We had it in Yorkshire, not far from York but no gas and private sewage as well.

Incacat2 · 30/09/2021 14:19

Rural Essex and my God it was such a pain. Oil boilers break down all the time and the tank stank. The prices were eye watering. If the oil gets too low you are in trouble, because an emergency top up is extortionate!
