In his speech, Keir Starmer said "Labour are the party of working people". I understand the sentiment, but could be alienating for those who are willing but unable to work.

...and those able but unwilling Wink

Whinginadeville · 29/09/2021 12:41

He can't win

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/09/2021 12:43

I should add, I do agree with most of his speech.

Put it this way. Imagine you are a person with a chronic illness who has been increasingly left to fend for themselves for the last decade, and then the most viable alternative to Boris pitches to working people and ignores those like yourself.

I have friends and relatives in this position.

I take your point.

Hdhdjejdj · 29/09/2021 13:04

I think it’s obvious he means this in a positive way and not as an attack on you.

SuperstarDog · 29/09/2021 13:05

Must be the party for working men then cos he certainly doesn’t stand for women, working or not. I don’t think they’ll be anyone he hasn’t alienated by the next election. Lots of Tory years ahead of us...fantastic. 😏

SuperstarDog · 29/09/2021 13:06

*I don’t think there will be

I don't see it as an attack on anyone, more of an omission.

Mentioning one group of people doesn’t mean he’s ignoring you. We need a strong economy and plenty of people in work to support people who aren’t able to work. This is all in your best interest.

Chosennone · 29/09/2021 13:09

I don't know any working class people who vote Labour anymore. He doesn't speak for working people. He speaks for middle class champagne socialists and men.

I don’t think anyone will take it like that unless they’re looking to be alienated.

It’s not as if the tories are the party of the unable to work…

DoraMaude · 29/09/2021 13:14

You're reading too much into this. I've lost my business due to covid so I'm not working at the moment but I didn't expect him to say 'and those who want to work but have lost their businesses due to covid'. He means people who need to work for a living.

Honestly, this overanalysing of everything is ridiculous.

Are they pissed off about this? I’ve been unable to work in the past and it wouldn’t have bothered me at all.
jgw1 · 29/09/2021 13:15

I have to disagree with you there. Plenty of current government ministers led by Dominic Sunlouger Raab are quite unable to work.

Grin Yes you’re absolutely right there.
AdoptedBumpkin · 29/09/2021 13:18

Maybe I am over analysing it, but I have friends and met others in recent years who felt left out by the Tory rhetoric of 'hardworking people/families'.

You are overthinking it. Massively.

SuperstarDog · 29/09/2021 13:27

Labour - The party for men and those that have trouble grasping human biology.

Yep. And all the men I know understand biology so Labour voters are going to be few and far between.

Yesterday they were discussing a £15 minimum wage. They're not a party for the working people. That wouldn't benefit anyone. It would put thousands of people out of work and would increase the cost of living massively.

Ploorfuzzle · 29/09/2021 13:33

It doesn't even make sense really, I know what you're saying, guessing they meant working class?

AdoptedBumpkin · 29/09/2021 13:36

Possibly - it's hard to be sure.

lifeturnsonadime · 29/09/2021 14:43

Labour are certainly not the party for the working woman.

They seem not to understand what one is, or that a woman might need sex based rights.
